Graviola will not cure cancer alone but in combination with other herbs, juices and therapies, Graviola will boost cancer treatment effectiveness.

Graviola’s other names include soursop, Brazilian paw paw, guanábana, guanábano, guanavana, guanaba, corossol épineux, huanaba, toge-banreisi, durian benggala, nangka blanda, cachiman épineux and guyabano. Graviola has sometimes been referred to as a miraculous natural cancer cell cure which is 10,000 times stronger than the leading or commonly used as chemotherapeutic drug.

Graviola Historical Medicinal Usage

Graviola has a long, rich history of use in herbal medicine as well as a lengthy recorded indigenous use. In the Peruvian Andes, a leaf tea is used for catarrh (inflammation of mucous membranes) and the crushed seed is used to kill parasites. In the Peruvian Amazon the bark, roots, and leaves of graviola are used for diabetes and as a sedative and antispasmodic.

Indigenous tribes in Guyana use a leaf and/or bark tea as a sedative and heart tonic. In the Brazilian Amazon a leaf tea is used for liver problems, and the oil of the leaves and unripe fruit is mixed with olive oil and used externally for neuralgia, rheumatism, and arthritis pain. In Jamaica, Haiti, and the West Indies the fruit and/or fruit juice is used for fevers, parasites and diarrhea; the bark or leaf is used as an antispasmodic, sedative, and nervine for heart conditions, coughs, flu, difficult childbirth, asthma, hypertension, and parasites.

For a long time graviola has been widely applied by indigenous population to cure various illnesses and diseases. Graviola has been praised for its abilities to fight cancer cells, kill viruses, bacteria and parasites, as well as to lower blood pressure, calm nerves, and prevent depression. This has made Graviola very important and precious in natural herbal medicine.

Graviola Health Benefits

Graviola has an extremely wide range of medicinal properties, which are distributed through the different parts of the plant. The fruit or juice of graviola is taken to reduce fever, counteract diarrhea and dysentery, and kill worms and other parasites. The seeds are also a potent antiparasitic and are used traditionally as a remedy for lice. The bark, leaves and roots can be made into a soothing medicinal tea, taken as a sedative or an antispasmodic. Research also bears out the traditional use of graviola tea as a hypotensive, a remedy for high blood pressure. The bark can also be used to treat fever, and the leaves are used topically to speed the healing of wounds. The unripe fruit of graviola is especially prized as a digestive aid. Graviola is applied to the skin for arthritis.

Graviola Anti Cancer

Many active compounds and chemicals have been found in graviola, as scientists have been studying its properties since the 1940s. Most of the research on graviola focuses on a novel set of chemicals called Annonaceous acetogenins. Various research groups have confirmed that these chemicals have significant antitumorous properties and selective toxicity against various types of cancer cells (without harming healthy cells). Many of the acetogenins have demonstrated selective toxicity to tumor cells at very low dosages—as little as 1 part per million.

Annonaceous acetogenins are only found in the Annonaceae family (to which graviola belongs). These chemicals in general have been documented with antitumorous, antiparasitic, insecticidal, and antimicrobial activities. Mode of action studies in three separate laboratories have recently determined that these acetogenins are superb inhibitors of enzyme processes that are only found in the membranes of cancerous tumor cells. This is why they are toxic to cancer cells but have no toxicity to healthy cells.

Four studies were published in 1998 which further specify the chemicals and acetogenins in graviola which are demonstrating the strongest anticancerous, antitumorous, and antiviral properties. In a 1997 clinical study, novel alkaloids found in graviola fruit exhibited antidepressive effects in animals.

Acetogenins are believed to slow down certain processes that take place only in cancer cells. This explains their selective toxicity: acetogenins destroy cancerous cells, but do not harm healthy ones. Furthermore, the researchers from the Purdue University published the statement in 1997, saying that acetogenins had the ability to kill cancerous cells that did not respond to traditional anti-cancer treatment. At the same time, these compounds had some analogy with the resistant cells. Graviola annonaceous acetogenins show positive results in the treatment of colon, breast, lung, ovarian, prostate, lymphoma, pancreatic, and cervical cancers. Acetogenins are said to be 10,000 times stronger in colon cancer cure than traditional adriamycin drug.

Graviola Dosage

The therapuetic dosage of graviola leaf, (which offers just as high of an amount of acetogenins as the root and almost as much as the seed) is reported to be 2-3 grams taken 3 or 4 times daily.

The leaves are used for the herbal dietary supplement.
Tincture 1 – 4 ml. daily (1 – 4 full droppers)
Infusion 1 – 3 cups daily

Graviola Precautions

The appropriate dose of graviola depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. At this time there is not enough scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for graviola. Keep in mind that natural products are not always necessarily safe and dosages can be important. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using.

Large dosages can cause nausea and vomiting.

People with low blood pressure or taking antihypertensive drugs should check with their doctors before taking Graviola and monitor their blood pressure accordingly.

For pregnant or breast-feeding women. Do not use graviola for pregnant or breat-feeding women.

For those who have Parkinson’s disease, graviola might make the symptoms worse. Graviola can kill nerve cells in the brain and other parts of the body. Graviola may cause movement disorders similar to Parkinson’s disease.

Ellagic Acid Cancer Cure http://fasting.ws/cancer/ellagic-acid-cancer-cure http://fasting.ws/cancer/ellagic-acid-cancer-cure#comments Sat, 27 Nov 2010 07:28:27 +0000 Cindy Pa-ac http://fasting.ws/cancer/?p=1481 Ellagic AcidEllagic acid can assist in a holistic cancer treatment. Ellagic acid will not cure cancer alone but in combination with other herbs, juices and therapies, ellagic acid will boost cancer treatment effectiveness.

Ellagic acid is a phytochemical found in raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, walnuts, pecans, pomegranates, and other plant foods.

Different researches have found that ellagic acid has antioxidant, apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, chemopreventive, and anticarcinogenic properties. Ellagic acid has also been found to protect normal cells against radiation damage making it a good addition to cancer radiotherapy. Another research found ellagic acid and quercetin to be anticarcinogenic.

Dr. Daniel Nixon, a pioneer in cancer prevention research at the Hollings Cancer Institute in the Medical University of South Carolina, has examined the ability of ellagic acid to prevent colon and cervical cancers from developing. Preliminary evidence generated by his team of researchers has indicated that ellagic acid can slow the proliferation of both human colon and cervical cancer cells grown in experimental systems outside of the body.

These findings have led to the hypothesis that ellagic acid may be useful in humans susceptible to either of these two cancers. While not yet complete, clinical studies are in progress at the Medical University of South Carolina and studies in women susceptible to cervical cancer are under way. The colon trial will measure ellagic acid’s ability to prevent the formation of colon polyps (which may be the precursor to colon cancer) and/or slow the growth of rapidly proliferating colon cells in human papilloma virus which is responsible for this disease.

Following exposure to ellagic acid human cervical cancer cells, infected with the human papilloma virus (HPV), die within several days due to apoptosis.

Ellagic acid is also found to prevent the destruction of a cellular regulatory gene, P53, by HPV oncogenies (genes responsible for cancer induction) in cervical cells. Similar protective effects were observed in breast, pancreas, esophageal, skin, colon, leukemia, and prostate cancer cells exposed to ellagic acid.
Raspberry, Ellagic AcidThe data from Dr. Nixon’s lab and other investigators indicate that ellagic acid activates detoxifying enzymes in the liver resulting in the clearing of cancer-causing chemicals in the serum; prevents the binding of carcinogens to cellular DNA; serves as an antioxidant in the scavenging and clearance of highly destructive oxygen free radicals; induces apoptosis in cancerous cells; and stimulates the immune system for the destruction of cancerous cells. Each of these attributes were found to be important in reducing the incidence of cancer in experimental models.

Finally, while the mechanisms are not yet fully known, research performed in Europe indicate that ellagic acid may also be useful in reducing the incidence of birth defects, promote wound healing, and limit chemically induced liver fibrosis. In addition, some investigators now believe that ellagic acid may be useful in the prevention of heart disease and periodontal disease.

Almost all studies conducted on ellagic acid to date have been done in cell cultures or laboratory animals. Several animal studies have found that ellagic acid can inhibit the growth of tumors of the skin, esophagus, and lung, as well as other tumors caused by carcinogens. Other studies have also found positive effects. Further studies are needed to determine whether these results apply to humans.

In the only study reported thus far in humans, Italian researchers found that ellagic acid seem to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy in men with advanced prostate cancer, although it did not slow disease progression or improve survival. The researchers cautioned that more research would be needed to confirm these results.

The highest levels of ellagic acid are found in raspberries, strawberries, and pomegranates, especially when they are freeze-dried. Extracts from red raspberry leaves or seeds, pomegranates, or other sources are said to contain high levels of ellagic acid and are available as dietary supplements in capsule, powder, or liquid form. The best dose of these preparations is not known.

Ellagic Acid Historical Medical Usage

Ellagic acid was studied in the 1960s mainly for its effects on blood clotting. Early published research on ellagic acid and cancer first appeared in the 1970s and 1980s. With the publication of several small laboratory studies in the mid-1990s, ellagic acid began to be promoted on the Internet and elsewhere as a means of preventing and treating cancer.

Ellagic acid has also been said to reduce heart disease, birth defects, liver problems, and to promote wound healing.

Ellagic Acid Precaution

Eating berries or other natural sources of ellagic acid is generally considered safe. These foods should be part of a balanced diet that includes several servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Ellagic acid is available in supplement form. Some reports indicate it may affect certain enzymes in the liver, which could alter the way in which some drugs are absorbed. For this reason, people taking medicines or other dietary supplements should talk with their doctors or pharmacists about all their medicines and supplements before taking ellagic acid. The raspberry leaf, or preparations made from it, should be used with caution during pregnancy because it may initiate labor.

Ellagic acid for the most part is free of harmful side effects, however an increase in blood pressure for some patients has been noticed.

If a cancer patient uses ellagic acid during a course of chemotherapy, the reduced side effects caused by Ellagic Acid may encourage the oncologist to increase the dose of chemo. If the patient then decides to stop the Ellagic Acid, for whatever reason, the side effects of chemotherapy can increase and greatly threaten the patients life.

Guarana Cancer http://fasting.ws/cancer/guarana-cancer http://fasting.ws/cancer/guarana-cancer#comments Thu, 25 Nov 2010 02:49:58 +0000 Joyce Ann Mallare http://fasting.ws/cancer/?p=1242 Guarana can assist in a holistic cancer treatment. Guarana will not cure cancer alone but in combination with other herbs, juices and therapies, guarana will boost cancer treatment effectiveness. Guaraná is a creeping shrub native to the Amazon (and particularly the regions of Manaus and Parintins). The plant is known and used worldwide and is the main ingredient in the “national beverage” of Brazil: Guaraná Soda. Guarana contains compounds that may give health benefits and also as a cure cancer.

Guarana Historical Medical Usage

The uses of guarana by the Amerindians predates the discovery of Brazil. They then use guarana much the same way as chocolate – to prepare various foods, drinks, and medicines. The rainforest tribes have used guaraná mainly as a stimulant and as an astringent (drying agent) for treating chronic diarrhea. Guarana is often taken during periods of fasting to tolerate dietary restrictions better. Botanist James Duke cites past and present tribal uses in the rainforest: as a preventive for arteriosclerosis; as an effective cardiovascular drug; as a pain-reliever, astringent, stimulant, and tonic used to treat diarrhea, hypertension, fever, migraine, neuralgia, and dysentery.

Over centuries the many benefits of guaraná have been passed on to explorers and settlers. European researchers began studying guaraná (in France and Germany) in the 1940s, finding that Indians’ uses to cure fevers, headaches, cramps, and as an energy tonic were well-founded. Guaraná is used and well known for its stimulant and thermogenic action.

Guarana Health Benefits

Guarana is a gentle excitant, and contains concntrated yet healthier caffeine twice as potent as those found in coffee. Guaraná is reputed to be as a stimulant and increase mental alertness, fight fatigue, and increase stamina and physical endurance due to guarana’s caffein.Guarana’s main uses include as a refrigerant (lowers body temperature) to prevent overheating and heat stroke,to tone, balance, and strengthen the heart, as a blood cleanser, and to reduce/prevent sticky blood and blood clots, and as a weight loss aid (suppresses appetite and increases fat-burning).

Guarana Enhances Memory

The use of guaraná as an effective energy tonic, for mental acuity, and to enhance long-term memory recently was validated by scientists. In a 1997 in vivo study, guaraná increased physical activity of rats, increased physical endurance under stress, and increased memory with single doses as well as with chronic doses.Guaraná (often in combination with other plants) also has been found to facilitate weight loss, by creating a feeling of fullness and having a mild thermogenic effect.

Another Brazilian research group has been studying guaraná ‘s apparent effect of increasing memory, thought to be linked to essential oils found in the seed. The plant was found to enhance memory retention and to have an anti-amnesic activity in mice and rats. A U.S. patent has been filed on a combination of plants (including guaraná) for promoting sustained energy and mental alertness “without nervousness or tension.”

Guaraná’s antibacterial properties against E. coli and Salmonella have been documented as well. Guaraná has also demonstrated antioxidant properties; researchers concluded, “Guaraná showed an antioxidant effect because, even at low concentrations (1.2 mcg/ml), it inhibited the process of lipid peroxidation.”

Guarana, Anti Cancer Agents

Guarana is an all natural stimulant which contains a substance called guaranine, which is often mistaken for caffeine. Guaranine is much safer, and yet more potent as a stimulant. Guarana also contains large amounts of theophylline, theobromine, and tannic acid(which may have protective effects against DNA damage). Guarana is rich in saponins which reduces the risk of cancer and boosts the immune system.

The xanthine alkaloids (caffeine, theophylline, theobromine) are believed to contribute significantly to guaraná’s therapeutic activity. In clinical studies, theophylline stimulates the heart and central nervous system, enhances alertness and alleviates fatigue. Guarana has strong diuretic activity and reduces constriction of the bronchials, making it useful in asthma. Theobromine has similar effects. Certainly many traditional uses of guaraná may be explained by its caffeine content.

There are many published studies supporting the use of caffeine in the treatment of cancer. The Journal of Nutrition And Cancer published a study in which SKH-1 mice, who were at high risk of developing malignant and nonmalignant tumors, received oral administration of caffeine alone as their sole source of drinking fluid for 18 to 23 weeks. The study revealed that not only did the caffeine inhibit the formation and decrease the size of nonmalignant tumors but malignant tumors as well.

Guarana Effects On Fatigue In Breast Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy

Guarana is an effective, cheap and nontoxic alternative for the treatment of fatigue in breast cancer patients receiving systemic chemotherapy. Further studies are needed to confirm our results and to evaluate their generalizability to other types of cancer.

Guarana Dosage

Caffeine intake of 180-450 milligrams a day (about the amount in 2-4 cups of brewed coffee or 500-1000mg of guarana extract) has been associated with mild stimulant properties and enhanced physical and mental performance.  Guarana may be more effective than caffeine in boosting the performance of DCA.

Guarana Precaution

Guarana should not be used by people who are sensitive to caffeine or xanthines. People with heart conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy, overactive thyroid, anxiety, insomnia, and kidney disease should only use guarana under the supervision of their doctor. Guarana should not to be used during pregnancy or while breast-feeding.

Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) for Cancer Treatment http://fasting.ws/cancer/dimethyl-sulfoxide-dmso-as-an-anti-cancer http://fasting.ws/cancer/dimethyl-sulfoxide-dmso-as-an-anti-cancer#comments Sat, 20 Nov 2010 02:46:35 +0000 Henley http://fasting.ws/cancer/?p=874 Commercially, Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a by-product of the wood industry. But unknown to many, it is a very powerful anti-cancer substance with a very low toxicity.

DMSO Background

The pharmaceutical history of DMSO began in 1961, when Dr. Jacob was head of the organ transplant program at Oregon Health Sciences University. It all started when he first picked up a bottle of this colorless liquid. While investigating its potential as a preservative for organs, he quickly discovered that it penetrated the skin quickly and deeply without damaging it. He was intrigued. Thus began his lifelong investigation of the drug.

As the news spread, six pharmaceutical companies launched their clinical studies for the benefits of DMSO. In 1965, a woman from Ireland died of allergic reactions after taking several drugs along with DMSO. While the precise cause was supposed to be determined first, the FDA was quick to close down trials citing this death and negative results from animal trials which were subjected to doses many times higher than what is used as medical doses for humans.

Hundreds of laboratory and human studies followed and reported no deaths as a result. However, the FDA has denied 7 applications to officially conduct further clinical studies and only approved 1 for interstitial cystitis.

To cut it short, many researches have been done and written on its medical and clinical implications along with the effectiveness of DMSO against cancer. But as usual, the FDA thinks it is out of the mainstream of medical discourse and therefore not approved as a cancer treatment component. “It’s a square peg being pushed into a round hole,” as Dr. Jacob says.

The only FDA-approved medical use of DMSO is for interstitial cystitis. It is ironic and confusing that when a proposed treatment no matter how highly-effective it is if it concerns a disease which is a matter of life and death, “Money matters most.”

DMSO and Chemotherapy

In chemotherapy, DMSO reduces the side effects and the damage of radiation treatments in people with cancer. DMSO boosts the immune system and scavenges free radicals caused by these treatments. DMSO (applied topically) protects the body against the toxic effects of X-Rays.

Chemotherapy is not focused at killing cancer cells. It also destroys normal cells and toxifies normal cells that survive. Not later than 1968, researchers had discovered that Haematoxylon combined with DMSO would enhance the effect of chemotherapy on cancer cells and spare normal cells. Further update on the advancement of this research has not been published from then. However one thing has been proven, DMSO and Haematoxylon increases the efficiency of chemotherapy. Read complete article discussing DMSO and Haematoxylon: Full Article

At present, a PET Scan shows up the cancer cells in an X-Ray. A patient will take a solution of radioactive glucose. Since cancer cells consume 15 times more glucose than normal cells, the cancer cells will appear more visible.

Orthodox medicine therefore knows how to target cancer cells. That is for the interest of pointing which cell is cancerous; but with the intent to kill the cancer cells rather than simply make them show up on an X-Ray,…

DMSO/Chemotherapy Protocol does function for the purpose of targeting cancer cells and beyond that, killing them. But rather than using glucose to target cancer cells it uses DMSO (Dimethylsulfoxide).

Essentially:
1) The DMSO “binds” to (i.e. chemically attaches to) certain kinds of chemotherapy drugs, then
2) The DMSO then always targets cancer cells, and
3) The DMSO will drag the chemotherapy into the cancer cells, and
4) The chemotherapy (which is now able to target cancer cells) will kill the cancer cells.

DMSO restores aerobic metabolism in cancer cells. Once aerobic metabolism is reestablished, the previously cancerous cells will eventually be eliminated via apoptosis or programmed cell death, like normal cells.

Other Uses of DMSO

Because DMSO increases the rate of absorption of some compounds through organic tissues including skin, it can be used as a drug delivery system.

DMSO is an important constituent of cryoprotectant vitrification mixtures used to preserve organs, tissues, stem cells, and cell suspensions. Without it, up to 90 percent of frozen cells will become inactive.

DMSO is often used as a cream or ointment applied to the skin to reduce pain, decrease swelling, treat autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, and promotes healing in wounds and burns, and interstitial cystitis being the only FDA-approved medical use of DMSO.

Toxicity

Jacob Lab estimates that the oral lethal dose of a 50% solution of DMSO is estimated to be greater than 10 gm/kg. The chronic toxicity of DMSO is virtually non-existent as it is improbable that this dosage level could be obtained under normal use.

Bioavailability

DMSO has the ability to pass through every tissue and cell membrane of the body except the enamel of the teeth, fingernails and hair without destroying the integrity of tissues and cell membranes.

It is readily absorbed when administered topically onto human skin – peak levels occur after 4-8 hours.

Topical administered DMSO is slightly less bioavailable than orally ingested DMSO.
Orally ingested DMSO is rapidly absorbed and reaches a blood serum peak in 4 hours and becomes undetectable after 120 hours.

DMSO is an effective transporter of other substances that may not normally cross the blood-brain barrier because it readily crosses this separation of the circulating blood and cerebrospinal fluid.

DMSO is excreted from the body partly in an unchanged state and partly as its metabolite – Dimethyl Sulfoxone (DMSO2).

DMSO Protocols

DMSO is often combined with other ingredients or supplements for a more effective cancer protocol. Among them are the following, arranged from what we assess is most effective to lesser efficacy.

Cesium Chloride – DMSO Protocol

When needed; especially for cancer patients who cannot take the cesium chloride orally; DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) allows cesium chloride to get inside the body transdermally (i.e. through the skin).

DMSO- Colloidal Silver Protocol

Chlorine Dioxide – DMSO Protocol

Cesium Chloride pH Cancer Treatment http://fasting.ws/cancer/cesium-chloride-ph-cancer-treatment http://fasting.ws/cancer/cesium-chloride-ph-cancer-treatment#comments Thu, 18 Nov 2010 04:21:19 +0000 Cindy Pa-ac http://fasting.ws/cancer/?p=632 CesiumCesium chloride can assist in a holistic cancer treatment. Cesium chloride will not cure cancer alone but in combination with other herbs, juices and therapies, cesium chloride will boost cancer treatment effectiveness.

Cesium chloride is the salt form of the element cesium. Cesium is a rare, naturally occurring element of alkali metal similar in chemical structure to lithium, sodium, and potassium.

1984 studies report that cesium chloride is effective against cancer by changing the acidic pH range of the cancer cell towards weak alkalinity in which the survival of the cancer cell is endangered, and the formation of acidic and toxic materials, normally formed in cancer cells, is neutralized and eliminated. This approach is termed the high pH therapy.

In another 1984 research, predetermined amounts of cesium chloride or carbonate, zinc gluconate and vitamin A were used together to alter growth of colon carcinoma implants in mice. Data showed that the use of these compounds in a treatment protocol is responsible for repression of tumor growth. It was also found that cesium is only moderately toxic and exerts salubrious effects which could be gainfully investigated for application in the treatment of certain psychological disorders and some tumor.

A research conducted by Hellfried Sartori, also in 1984, reported a total of 50 patients treated over a 3-year period with cesium chloride. The majority of the patients had been unresponsive to previous maximal modalities of cancer treatment and were considered terminal cases. The treatment consisted of cesium chloride, some vitamins, minerals, chelating agents, and salts of selenium, potassium, and magnesium. In addition, a special diet was also instituted. There was an impressive 50% recovery of various cancers (i.e. cancer of unknown primary, breast, colon, prostate, pancreas, lung, liver, lymphoma, ewing sarcoma of the pelvis and adeno-cancer of the gallbladder) by the cesium chloride therapy employed. There was a 26% and 24% death within the initial 2 weeks and 12 months of treatment, respectively. A consistent finding in these patients was the disappearance of pain within the initial 3 days of cesium chloride treatment. The small number of autopsies made showed the absence of cancer cells in most cases.
Cesium
In a 2003 report, cesium levels were measured to determine exposure to an alternative medical treatment. This was based on cesium levels reported from two patients who were administered cesium chloride in conjunction with aloe vera as part of an alternative cancer treatment. High level of cesium were found in brain, liver, kidney, bile, gastric content, and whole blood collected at autopsy as compared to reference levels. The highest cesium chloride concentrations were found in the liver, followed by the kidney, and then the brain. The high accumulation in the liver suggests that hepatotoxicity from cesium might be an initial presenting symptom in cesium chloride poisoning.

In a 2007 study it was found that cesium chloride may have therapeutic effects against prostate cancer but may also induce acute toxicities dependent on the dosage administered.

A 2010 review on available material on cesium salts and their applications on medicine concluded that the presence of cesium in the cell does not guarantee high pH of its content, and there is no clinical evidence to support the claims that cancer cells are vulnerable to cesium.

In addition to cancer therapy, a U.S. Patent has been issued on the use of cesium chloride as a nerve stimulant.

pH Therapy

The pH therapy was created by Keith Brewer in 1984 using Otto Warburg‘s Nobel Prize winning 1931 research that cancer thrives in acidic conditions. Using Warburg’s theory, Brewer was able to create a cost efficient treatment protocol for cancer and was able to treat 30 patients with various cancers through cesium.

In Brewer’s 1984 study, it was shown that potassium, rubidium, and especially cesium are most efficiently taken up by cancer cells. This uptake was enhanced by Vitamins A and C as well as salts of zinc and selenium. The quantity of cesium taken up was sufficient to raise the cell to the 8 pH range where cell mitosis ceases and the life of the cell is short. Tests on mice fed cesium and rubidium showed marked shrinkage in the tumor masses within 2 weeks. In addition, the mice showed none of the side effects of cancer. Another test have been carried out on over 30 humans. In each case the tumor masses disappeared. Also all pains and effects associated with cancer disappeared within 12 to 36 hours.

The use of cesium chloride should not be confused with the use of radioactive cesium 137, an artificial isotope produced in nuclear reactors.

Lack of Survival Studies Regarding the Usage of Cesium for Cancer

Brewer used cesium chloride with other leading anti-cancer products in his studies so it is difficult to determine whether it was liquid cesium or the other components of the combined therapy that was the cause of the increased survival of the 30 patients he treated. There is also no mention of how long those 30 patients survived for.

Sartori also used a combination of cesium chloride and other components. Furthermore, Sartori’s medical license was revoked in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington State after relying on “unvalidated techniques” in a manner that was medically inappropriate. A news article reported that four cancer patients in Perth died after two weeks of Sartori’s treatment. This involved the administration of cesium chloride, magnesium sulphate, and potassium chloride. A fifth patient, who also underwent the same treatment, stopped after five days following unbearable pain and being told to control the pain with his mind.

Hans Nieper, who also advocated the use of liquid cesium chloride as well as other anti-cancer products, was well-known for not providing any follow up survival statistics.

Cesium Chloride Precaution

The toxic dose for cesium chloride is 135 g. Though relatively safe, mild toxicities may occur when using cesium. This can be seen through gastrointestinal distress, hypotension, syncope, numbness, or tingling of the lips. Total cesium intakes of 6 g per day have been found to produce severe hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, prolonged QTc interval, episodes of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, with or without torsade de pointes, and even acute heart arrest. However, full information on its acute and chronic toxicity is not sufficiently known.

Chlorella Cancer Treatment http://fasting.ws/cancer/chlorella-cancer-treatment http://fasting.ws/cancer/chlorella-cancer-treatment#comments Thu, 18 Nov 2010 00:43:39 +0000 Jenks Biang http://fasting.ws/cancer/?p=536 Other Names: Bulgarian Chlorella, Bulgarian Green Algae, Chinese Chlorella, Chlorella Algae, Chlorella Vulgaris, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Clorela, Freshwater Green Algae, Freshwater Seaweed, Green Alga, Green Algae, Japanese Chlorella, Seaweed, Yaeyama Chlorella.

Chollera can assist in a holistic cancer treatment. Chollera will not cure cancer alone but in combination with other herbs, juices and therapies, chollera will boost cancer treatment effectiveness.

Over 30,000 species of algae inhabit the earth, from microscopic blue green algae to giant kelp strands over 120 feet long. Microalgae include blue-green algae such as spirulina and aphanizomenon and green algae such as chrorella and dunaliella. Such algae are found always near a source of fresh water and represent the very first life forms on the earth, some 3.6 billion years ago.

Although there has been interest in algae as a food source for over a hundred years, only after the Second World War did this intensify as the Japanese, in particular, looked for ways to feed the nation. Algae can be produced on relatively barren land and at protein levels twenty times higher than soya beans.

Most algae have a structure like a virus, being very primitive with no nucleus, but what differentiates Chlorella is that it does have a nucleus which gives it so many of its “extra properties” and in recent years this form has amplified the interest in algae and their benefits.

Thus, Chlorella is a unique, single celled, fresh water algae. It is often dubbed, a “pure food” or a “whole food” because it contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes and polysaccharides. Indeed almost everything you could want in a natural supplement!

Chlorella is a type of algae that grows in fresh water. The whole plant is used to make nutritional supplements and medicine. Chlorella is a good source of protein, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals. The cell wall of chlorella must be broken down before people can digest it.

Most of the chlorella that is available in the U.S. is grown in Japan or Taiwan. It is processed and made into tablets and liquid extracts. These extracts contain “chlorella growth factor,” which is described as a water-soluble extract of chlorella containing chemicals including amino acids, peptides, proteins, vitamins, sugars, and nucleic acids.

Be aware that chlorella products can vary significantly depending on the way “the crop” used to make them was cultivated, harvested, and processed. Investigators have found that dried preparation of chlorella can contain from 7% to 88% protein, 6% to 38% carbohydrate, and 7% to 75% fat.

As a medicine, chlorella is used for preventing cancer, reducing radiation treatment side effects, stimulating the immune system, improving response to flu vaccine, increasing white blood cell counts (especially in people with HIV infection or cancer), preventing colds, protecting the body against toxic metals such as lead and mercury, and slowing the aging process.

Chlorella is also used to increase “good” bacteria in the intestine in order to improve digestion; and to help treat ulcers, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and diverticulosis.

Some people also use chlorella for the prevention of stress-related ulcers; treatment of constipation, bad breath, and hypertension; as an antioxidant; to reduce cholesterol; to increase energy; to detoxify the body; and as a source of magnesium to promote mental health, relieve premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and reduce asthma attacks. It is also used for fibromyalgia.

Chlorella is applied to the skin for treating skin ulcers, rashes caused by radiation treatment, and a sexually transmitted disease called trichomoniasis.

Chlorella and Fighting Cancer

Since chlorella is proven to increase the white cell content of the body, it can prove an important aid both during and after chemotherapy.

Its benefits increase significantly where the body has a healthy natural flora balance in the gut. Chlorella stimulates the growth of certain beneficial bacteria and its benefits are in turn enhanced by beneficial bacteria. Taking chlorella and a good quality multi-strain probiotic has a particularly powerful synergistic effect.

Clinical trials show that chlorella and beneficial bacteria, properly stimulated, will chelate heavy metals, nitrosamines and oestrogenic products helping their elimination from the body. Correct levels of beneficial bacteria will also aid production of cancer fighting vitamins such as B-12 , biotin, folic acid and vitamin K from the ‘greens’.

Again, there are clinical trials on this. (NB. The combination of chlorella and beneficial bacteria may cause some ´wind problems´ for the first three or four days. This is actually a sign that your flora are correctly re-balancing.)

So chlorella is, quite simply, an excellent way of delivering important vitamins such as B-12 into your blood stream. This is very important in the cancer fight as estimates suggest 50 per cent of cancers are associated with poor diet. For example, women with breast cancer have been shown to have a deficiency of vitamin B-12. This is exacerbated if they then decide to ´Go vegetarian´ as part of their treatment programme. 70 per cent of Vegetarians are deficient in B-12 as it chiefly occurs in meat. Chlorella (and probiotic strains) can help significantly. Vitamin K has been shown to stop liver cancer in research studies in Tokyo and Washington. And you can only get your vitamin K naturally from green foods and the action of beneficial bacteria on them causing its release.

Following a paper by Waladkhani and Clemens in 1990 (Effects of dietary phytochemicals on cancer development) there has been increasing interest in the benefits of chlorophyll in general in the cancer fighting process. Algae, chlorophyll, chlorella and other such elements have all been tested as agents for use with photodynamic therapy, largely by the Russians. In the presence of light, chlorophyll produces oxygen – the very substance that cancer cells hate.

The chlorophyll molecule is structurally very similar to the haemoglobin molecule, but whereas haemoglobin has iron at its centre, chlorophyll has magnesium. When light shines on chlorophyll it emits oxygen, the basic system of photosynthesis. These facts mean that firstly chlorophyll is relatively free to travel round the blood system non-toxically because of its resemblance to haemoglobin; and secondly, in the presence of light, it produces oxygen – the very substance that cancer cells hate. The ´sun belt´ across America has been shown to be a region of less cancer. The population consume higher levels of ´Greens´ and the sunshine gives them higher levels of vitamin D. Moreover, in a land where 40 per cent of the population has magnesium deficiencies, the people of the sun belt do not. And magnesium is linked to correct mineral levels inside the cell and its power stations, the mitochondria. Incorrect mineral levels (e.g, too high a sodium level, too low in potassium) is linked to cancer.

Certainly, there is a lot of well documented evidence from the Far East on the benefits of eating green vegetables for diseases such as colon cancer, or for increasing levels of phytoestrogens, and their protection against hormonally induced cancers like the oestrogen-driven breast, ovarian, prostate, womb and brain cancers.

Chlorella fights cancer by boosting the immune system.

Cancer cells develop in everyone’s body. People who have never been diagnosed with cancer have hundreds or thousands of cancerous cells in their bodies on a daily basis. It is the job of the immune system to make sure these dangerous cells are found and destroyed before they can develop into full blown cancers. When a person is diagnosed as having cancer, it means that something has gone seriously wrong with their immune system. Many health gurus have declared that cancer is a result of immune system failure.

This means that one of the best ways to prevent cancer is to strengthen the immune system. For people who have had cancer and want to prevent recurrence, this is critical. The need for a strong immune system to destroy cancerous cells is why health advocates are so strongly against chemotherapy, which destroys the body’s immune system and leaves the person wide open for more cancer.

Chlorella stimulates the immune system and the production of interferon, one of the body’s greatest natural defenses against cancer. Increased production of interferon stimulates macrophages, T-cells and tumor necrosis factor, the battery of armed soldiers the body uses to fight off cancer. When the immune system is strengthened, the body becomes again able to fight off cancer as well as defend itself against viruses, bacteria, chemicals, and foreign proteins.

Carotenoids from chlorella make cancer cells die.

Scientists in South Korea recently found that carotenoids from chlorella may be effectively used to prevent cancer in humans. They discovered the primary carotenoid from C. Ellipsoidea is violaxanthin, while the major carotenoid from C. Vulgaris is lutein. They examined the activity of semi-purified extracts of these carotenoids against human cancer and found they inhibited cancer cell growth in a dose-dependent manner.

When both were used together, appropriate programmed cell death, known as apoptosis, was enhanced. The reason cancer cells are so problematic is that they refuse to die on cue. Chlorella made sure they followed through when it was their time to die. The researchers also discovered that C. ellipsoidea extract was 2.5 times more effective than C. vulgaris at inducing the apoptotic effect. (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, November 26, 2008).

Chlorella has a distinguished history as a cancer fighter.

Although Western medicine has generally ignored chlorella, scientists in the East have widely researched and documented its cancer fighting abilities. One such study involved mice given chlorella prior to being transplanted with breast tumors. The results indicated a 70 percent survival rate in the chlorella fed group, and a control group survival rate of zero.

In another study, fifteen patients with extremely deadly glioblastoma were treated with high levels of chlorella, in some cases combined with chemotherapy and radiation. There was an immediate increase in their health and immune status, and they experienced a 40 percent two-year survival rate, compared to the normal two year survival rate of 10 percent for this type of cancer.

Chlorella A Key Detoxification Tool

In Japan, interest in chlorella has focused largely on its detoxifying properties – its ability to remove or neutralize poisonous substances from the body. This detoxification of heavy metals and other chemical toxins in the blood will take 3 to 6 months to build up enough to begin this process depending on how much chlorella a person is taking.

The tough outer fiber rich cell wall of chlorella binds with toxins, pesticides, and heavy metals making chlorella an excellent choice for detoxification. It is useful in the breakdown of persistent hydrocarbon and metallic toxins such as DDT, PCBs, mercury, cadmium, and lead. These toxins remain in the environment for long periods of time and degrade very slowly. Many actually become more toxic as they degrade, such as PCBs’ formation of dioxins.

These fat soluble toxins have accumulated in the food chain and permeated the food supply. Virtually all Americans have been shown to have excessive amounts of these chemicals stored in their body fat. Anyone who is trying to lose weight should be aware that environmental toxins are released from fat storage and dumped into the blood stream as fats cells are broken down. They need to be cleared from the body by a natural detoxification system such as that offered by chlorella. Such toxins are also harmful to thyroid function and one of the reasons so many Americans suffer from thyroid insufficiency. When the body is detoxified, many people find their thyroid condition improves.

One of the reasons new mothers are given for why they should not breast feed is the accumulation of dangerous levels of dioxin in breast milk. Scientists in Japan analyzed dioxin levels in breast milk and maternal blood samples from 35 pregnant women. They measured immunoglogulin A (IgA) concentrations in the milk and investigated correlations with dioxin concentrations. In addition, 18 of the 25 women took chlorella supplements during their pregnancies.

The scientists found that toxic equivalents were significantly lower in the breast milk of the women taking chlorella tablets than in the control group. The results suggested that supplementing with chlorella reduces transfer of dioxins to the child through breast milk, although the lowered levels seen may have been the result of more toxins being cleared from the bodies of the mothers taking chlorella. IgA levels were significantly higher in the chlorella group. Increased IgA levels in breast milk are considered a sign of reduced risk of infection in nursing infants (Journal of Medicinal Food, March, 2007).

Chlorella is comprised of a fibrous, indigestible outer shell (20%) and its inner nutrients (80%). It is the fibrous material which has been proven to actually bind with the heavy metals and pesticides – such as PCBs – which can accumulate in our bodies. A clean bloodstream, with an abundance of red blood cells to carry oxygen, is necessary to a strong natural defense system.

Chlorella’s cleansing action on the bowel and other elimination channels, as well as its protection of the liver, helps keep the blood clean. Clean blood insures that metabolic wastes are efficiently carried away from the tissues. Chlorella gets its name from the high amount of chlorophyl it possesses.

Chlorella contains more chlorophyl per gram than any other plant.

Chlorophyl is one of the greatest food substances for cleansing the bowel and other elimination systems, such as the liver and the blood. Green algae are the highest sources of chlorophyl in the plant world. And of all the green algae studied so far, chlorella has the highest, often ranging from 3 to 5% pure natural chlorophyll.

Hemoglobin is the protein in our red blood cells which binds with oxygen and gives blood its bright red color. Chlorophyll cells are nearly identical to hemoglobin, with one exception: Chlorophyll has a magnesium molecule at its center while hemoglobin has an iron molecule at the center of it. This is important because magnesium is essential for the heart to function properly. Every time our heart beats, it is utilizing magnesium to do so.

Chlorophyll is effective against anemia and stimulates the production of red blood cells in the body. It also helps carry oxygen around the body and to the brain. This is why chlorella is often called a ‘Brain Food’. Several researchers have suggested the use of chlorophyll as a medical therapy for anemia.

Chlorella contains:

  • Protein (Amino-Acid compositions)
  • Various kinds of Vitamins & Minerals to strengthn the immune system
  • Removes toxins and metals like Mercury, detoxifies the body
  • Contains Chlorophyl to facilitate hemoglobin production
  • Cotains Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) to support growth in children
  • Aids in weight management by decreasing food cravings
  • Recommended for people seeking nutritional balance.
  • Helps maintain youth and regain lost energy.

Chlorella Health Benefits

Chlorella is a food. As such, it is almost impossible to take too much chlorella. It is also this fibrous material which greatly augments healthy digestion and overall digestive track health.

Chlorella Will Improve Your Digestive System

Since chlorella has such a high chlorophyll content, people find chronic bad breath is often eliminated in just a few days on chlorella. Foul smelling stools are also greatly improved and chlorophyll has been attributed to relieving constipation.

Chlorella Contains Natural Digestive and other Enzymes

Chlorella contains enzymes such as chlorophyllase and pepsin, which are two digestive enzymes. Enzymes perform a number of important functions in the body. Chlorella has many different types of enzymes that our bodies need.

Chlorella is Alkaline and Helps Balance Your Body’s pH

It’s important that we maintain a balance body pH of ideally about 7.2-7.4, which is about neutral. However, because of our poor diet of junk food, overcooked, processed foods, fast food, which include soft drinks which have a pH of 2.7, most of us are not balanced.

This is important because most diseases start, live and thrive in an acidic environment and do not live well in an alkaline environment. Cancer rates have risen steadily so that now fully 1/3 of all people in the U. S. will get cancer in their lifetime. The rise of fast, junk and processed foods match those of rising cancer rates. 30 years ago, cancer in children was almost unheard of. Now they have entire hospital wards given over to children with cancer. Including whole foods like chlorella in your diet is one step you can take toward reducing your risks for cancer.

Chlorella Normalizes Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure

Studies have shown that chlorella tends to normalize blood sugar in cases of hypoglycemia. In hypoglycemia, blood sugar is too low. Proper levels of blood sugar are necessary for normal brain function, heart function and energy metabolism, all of which are crucial in sustaining good health and preventing disease. High blood pressure is one of the major risk factors in heart attack and stroke, which account for more fatalities in the United States than any other disease. Laboratory experiments have shown that regular use of chlorella reduces high blood pressure and prevents strokes in rats.

The Anti-Aging Properties of Chlorella

Chlorella, Jewel of the Far East

“Dr Benjamin Frank, author of The No-Aging Diet, suggests that human RNA/DNA production slows down progressively as people age, resulting in lower levels of vitality and increased vulnerability to various diseases. He recommended a diet rich in nucleic acids to counter this “aging” process. Current levels by laboratory analysis shows 3% RNA and 0.3% DNA in Chlorella which would make it one of the highest known food substances in nucleic acids…..When our RNA and DNA are in good repair and able to function most efficiently, our bodies are able to use nutrients more effectively, get rid of toxins and avoid disease. Cells are able to repair themselves and the energy level and vitality of the whole body is raised….Dr Frank had thought that brewer’s yeast was the highest RNA food but then he found out sardines were 10 times higher (with 343mg per 100 grams). Chlorella is 10 times higher than sardines with 3g RNA per 100 grams….Eating foods high in nucleic acids provides the material for the repair and production of human nucleic acids, and it is the breakdown of DNA and RNA in the cells that is believed to be one of the main factors in aging and degenerative diseases.” – Dr Bernard Jensen,D.O.,Ph.D.

Chlorella: The sun-powered super nutrient and its beneficial properties

“Since Chlorella Growth Factor is so effective in stimulating growth in human beings and beefing up the immune system to fight off various diseases, Dr Bernard Jensen and other researchers have wondered whether or not Dr Frank’s pioneering work on aging might apply to Chlorella….Dr Frank found that his treatment actually did help his patients regain energy and a more youthful appearance. In addition, long-standing problems with arthritis, memory loss and depression began to abate.” – William H. Lee, R. Ph., Ph.D. and Michael Rosenbaum, M.D.

Chlorella and Its Effect on Degenerative Diseases

Chlorella: Natural Medicinal Algae

“With the continuos exposure of our foods to hydrocarbon insecticides and herbicides it seems that Chlorella should find its way onto everyone’s dining table. Chlorella should be taken daily to remove these harmful substances from our bodies before they cause cancer and other degenerative diseases. Chlorella has great potential in aiding the treatment of cancer, AIDS, Epstein Barr virus and other chronic viral illnesses and is especially helpful in preventing the degenerative diseases associated with the aging process.” – Dr David Steenblock,B.S.,M.Sc.,D.O.

Chlorella Influences How Genes Express Themselves

Scientists in Malaysia backed up this study by finding that C. vulgaris kills cancer cells by decreasing expression of the Bcl-2 gene. When this gene is mutated, it prevents cells from dieing and allows cancers to develop. C. vulgaris also increased the expression of capsase 8, a gene that plays a central role in the execution phase of cell apoptosis (Journal of Zhejiang University, Science B, January).

These findings offer a graphic example of how what we chose to put into our bodies governs the way our genes express themselves. The more we are able to regulate gene expression, the greater the control we have over our physiological destiny.

More recent research has shown other anti-cancer bioactivity of chlorella, including its ability to inhibit the COX-2 enzyme that leads to cancer-causing inflammation and the pain that accompanies it. Chlorella was shown to have anti-thrombotic effects that can lead to increased blood flow and reduce the possibility of platelet aggregation that might induce blood clots. It reduces PLA2, an important marker of heart disease, and encourages the production of proteins that regulate cell function, and enzymes that regulate calcium in the body. Formation and production of tumors, and viral replication were inhibited by chlorella, and the anti-tumor response of the immune system was strengthened. (International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition), December 23, 2008.

Chlorella is a Treasure Chest of Life Enhancing Properties

Chlorella is a tiny, single-celled water-grown green algae with a nucleus. It is chocked of nutrients including an immense amount of readily available chlorophyll, the life blood of plants. Chlorophyll absorbs energy from the sun to facilitate photosynthesis. It is central to plant metabolism and critical to plant functions such as growth and respiration. Without this green blood of plants, life as we know it would not exist. Chlorophyll is chemically similar in composition to human blood, except that the central atom in chlorophyll is magnesium, while iron is the central component in human blood.

Chlorophyll neutralizes environmental toxins and pollutants. It helps the blood carry oxygen to all cells and tissues. Cancer cannot thrive in cells that are fully oxygenated. Chlorophyll plays a part in chlorella’s ability to detoxify heavy metals, and is a natural wound healer. There is evidence that chlorophyll reduces the ability of carcinogens to bind with DNA in major organs. Its anti-mutagenic properties make it protective against toxins such as pharmaceutical drugs.

The vitamins and minerals in chlorella are plentiful. It is rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K, and is one of the few whole food sources of vitamin D. Chlorella has the complete vitamin B complex with more B-12 than liver by weight. Beta carotene and lutein, two carotenoids with a wealth of disease fighting benefits, are found in abundance.

Chlorella contains 58% highly digestible complete vegetarian protein. Zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, rare trace minerals, essential fatty acids including gamma linolenic acid (GLA), and polysaccharides are found in chlorella. One of the ways chlorella eases digestion is through its broad spectrum of enzymes that includes pepsin.

These nutrients were combined by nature, not a corporation. As such, they exist in natural harmony and synergy and are highly bioavailable for use in the body. This makes chlorella a better choice than isolated compounds taken individually, or combination compounds like multi-vitamin capsules. Chlorella can replace many expensive individual supplements and drastically lower the cost of supplementing while increasing its quality.

Just over 18% of chlorella is growth factor produced in its nuclei. Chlorella growth factor offers many of the benefits found in human growth hormone. Chlorella is up to 10% RNA, and up to 3% DNA.

There is plenty of fiber too. The fibrous outer cell wall of chlorella provides material to enhance digestion and keep the digestive tract healthy.

Chlorella provides natural detoxification, inflammation control, cholesterol regulation, immune system strength, estrogen balance, blood sugar stabilization, and digestive bliss. It is loaded with antioxidants to keep you looking and feeling young, and even reduces the percentage of body fat.

Chlorella Reduces Body Fat

Researchers in Kyoto, Japan fed chlorella for a 16 week period to 17 people with high-risk factors for lifestyle-related diseases, and 17 healthy subjects. They found that in both groups, chlorella intake resulted in noticeable reductions in body fat percentages, total serum cholesterol levels, and fasting blood glucose levels. They found that many genes influencing metabolism and insulin signaling pathways were influenced in their expression by chlorella. When chlorella was no longer ingested, the genes returned to their pre-ingestion state (Journal of Medicinal Food, September, 2008).

Chlorella a Potent Chelator: Binding Heavy Metals & Escorting Them Out

A group of 40 rats was divided into one control group and three groups that were treated with cadmium. One cadmium group received no chlorella, one received 5% chlorella, and one received 10% chlorella. After 8 weeks, the relative liver weight was significantly lower in the group receiving no chlorella compared with both groups receiving chlorella, indicating severe liver damage in the no-chlorella group. The group displayed significantly higher concentrations of cadmium in their livers than did the groups receiving chlorella. Liver RNA was high in the chlorella treated groups (Journal of Medicinal Food, September, 2008).

In another study assessing the chelating abilities of chlorella, levels of interleukine-6, a stimulator of red blood cell production, were investigated along with the number of adherent and non-adherent cells. Mice that had been drinking water containing 1300 ppm of lead acetate were treated with chlorella for 10 days. The researchers found that chlorella improved cellular function, increased the ability of cells to produce interleukin-6, and restored the reduced number of non-adherent cells. Monitoring of lead poisoning demonstrated that chlorella treatment significantly reduced lead levels in blood and tissues, completely restoring the normal levels of healthy fats in the liver, and decreasing abnormally high plasma levels of fats (Food Chemistry Toxicology, July, 2008.

These findings make chlorella a highly desirable addition to any meal containing foods in which the presence of heavy metals is suspected, such as fish. Taking chlorella while undergoing removal of dental fillings containing mercury will allow the chlorella to bind with the mercury and escort it out of the body.

A Natural Immune Booster

Apart from its benefit as a food, there are numerous studies, largely emanating from Japan (e.g. Sarkar 1994 or Hayatsu 1993 or Konishi 1990), which show chlorella to be a strong booster of the immune system. In particular chlorella increases interferon production which in turn stimulates macrophages (the “digesters” of rogue cells) and T-lymphocytes (the identifiers of rogue cells). Not surprisingly several studies show that it combats infection (e.g. Konishi).

It has also been shown in Japanese research to promote growth in children and to be a strong aid to tissue healing.

Chlorella Side Effects

  • Mild side effects from chlorella that have been reported include nausea, bloating and stomach upsets, although these usually disappear after a short time of use. Some people using chlorella have developed a sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Chlorella causes an allergic reaction in some users, which manifests as breathing difficulties, a tightness in the throat or chest, chest pains, skin hives, rash, itching or swollen skin. If you experience any of these allergic symptoms, stop taking chlorella immediately and consult your doctor.
  • Chlorella’s tough, cellulose cell wall is hard to digest. As a result, people who suffer from cellulase enzyme insufficiency cannot tolerate intake of chlorella because they lack the enzyme necessary to digest it. To use this supplement, they will have to take it in conjunction with a digestive enzyme supplement that contains cellulase to facilitate the digestion of chlorella. This cellulase digestive supplement is available in most health food stores.
  • There is anecdotal evidence that chlorella is relatively high in mercury content, at levels that are higher than what is considered safe. Intake of high levels of mercury can result in tingling sensations in the toes, fingers and lips, as well as headaches, fatigue, irritability, muscle weakness and loss of concentration. There are, however, no clinical studies to support this.
  • Chlorella has been found to raise the uric levels in the blood. This tends to exacerbate gout, which is a rheumatic condition in which uric acid crystals form in the joints. High uric levels also present a risk factor for heart disease.

Chlorella Considerations

Since chlorella is sold as a supplement rather than a drug, there is no requirement for extensive clinical studies on its side effects or interactions. For this reason, full studies on harmful side effects are not readily available, and detailed information on ill effects and interactions are incomplete.

Chlorella Precaution
With such little research conducted on this popular supplement, pregnant women should err on the side of caution and avoid taking it. This is even more important because of the potentially high mercury content level.

The experts speak on chlorella and cancer:

  • Chlorella is green algae, which, in a study by Fukada, was observed to have immune-stimulating qualities. It’s another herb whose healing properties have not been of much interest to Western medicine.

  • Most research has been done on a one-celled alga known as chlorella. This has been shown to have powerful anti-tumor effects. An oral administration of chlorella protected between 73 and 80 percent of mice against several kinds of cancer. However, all the mice that received chlorella that had been deprived of its protein, died. (Cancer Therapy by Ralph W Moss PhD, page 203)
  • Chlorella can neutralize and eliminate some of the contaminating heavy metals and strengthen the immune system, and GLA, which enhances prostaglandin production and possesses anti-inflammatory abilities. (Complete Encyclopedia Of Natural Healing by Gary Null PhD, page 135)
  • Japanese scientists studied chlorella (pyrenoidosa) as a biological response modifier. First, experimental mice were given chlorella every other day for ten days. Then one of three kinds of cancer—breast, leukemia or Ehrlich ascites—were injected into them. All of the untreated mice died within 20 days.

  • Natural healers recommend chlorella for nonspecific complaints such as fatigue and for anyone who generally wants to feel stronger or healthier. It is also used by alternative physicians as part of an overall cancer treatment program.

  • Since chlorella does not directly kill cancer cells, the scientists concluded that its effects were caused by boosting the immune response.
Cancer Therapy by Ralph W Moss PhD, page 204
  • Chlorella does not contain the biliprotein phycocyanin found in blue-green algae such as spirulina and wild blue-green; therefore it does not have this anti-cancer dimension. Those who benefit from the immune-strengthening value of CGF and also want phycocyanin can simply add a blue-green alga. Any two or more micro-algae combine well, especially if both are needed.

  • In another experiment, a group of scientists took a hot water extract of chlorella and injected it into the body cavities of mice that had first been inoculated with tumor cells. They found that “survival times were strikingly prolonged.” Furthermore, when they gave mice injections of chlorella, their cells still exhibited “an anti-tumor effect” 24 hours later. This effect remained intact even after ‘T’ type white blood cells and macrophage (scavenger) cells were destroyed, but it was effectively wiped out by irradiation. Chlorella’s anticancer effect was thus dependent on the portion of the immune system most sensitive to x-rays.

  • Many reports have come from Japanese research studies that followed the nuclear catastrophe resulting from atomic bombs that were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. In a report to the General Meeting of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan on an early study in animals, Ichimura (1973) reported that chlorella (8 grams daily) increased elimination of cadmium: threefold in feces and sevenfold in urine. Other researchers from Japan showed that chlorella helped detoxify uranium and lead (Horikoshi et al. 1979). chlorella has detoxification potential for similar compounds, such as dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls. (PCBs are chemical compounds used in plastics, insulation, and flame retardants, with potential to cause cancer and liver damage.) Other research indicates that chlorella is useful in detoxification of high levels of mercury in the body caused by removal of mercury amalgam. Some dentists recommend chlorella to patients who are having mercury amalgams replaced (as well as to themselves and staff who can incur accidental exposure from day-to-day exposure to amalgam filling procedures) (O’Brien 2001).

  • Japanese researchers recently discovered that chlorella could raise blood levels of the protein albumin. Albumin is one of the body’s most powerful antioxidants as well as its main transport system, carrying vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, hormones, and other essential substances throughout the body. Albumin is also instrumental in carrying toxins away from cells and into the liver, where they are broken down and later excreted from the body. Without adequate levels of albumin, the kidneys, liver, and other vital organs cannot do their jobs as well, and the immune system cannot function as efficiently. Numerous studies have documented that a low albumin level is a marker for serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. They point to test-tube studies confirming that raising albumin levels can both prevent cancerous changes and extend the life span of human cells. Although no such studies have been done on humans, it makes sense that raising albumin levels would help to restore health.

  • The law of similars (“like cures like”) offers another approach to understanding the immune-strengthening quality of chlorella: an organism with a tough outer cell wall may well possess the basic properties which strengthen our own cellular structure against invading organisms and toxins.

  • Since chlorella has a true nucleus, it is a more evolved organism than the other common green micro-algae and therefore may offer superior-quality RNA/DNA. This particular aspect of its RNA/DNA, measured by the CGF, strengthens immunity by improving the activity of T- and B-cells, which defend against viruses and other invading microorganisms, and macrophages, which destroy cancer and cellular debris in general.

  • For cancer, AIDS, Epstein-Barr syndrome, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, tumors, Candida overgrowth, excessive mucus, edema, and other conditions associated with dampness, wild blue-green is generally the most useful. Individuals who are not particularly excessive will benefit from a moderate dosage of 1.5-2 grams. The upper dosage ranges of cereal grass, chlorella (excellent for disorders with immune malfunction), spirulina, and dunaliella are also beneficial additions (often spirulina and dunaliella are used together). One may choose the one or two most appropriate of these green foods based on their properties.

  • This research, says Tim Sara, president of Nature’s Balance, a major U.S. supplier of chlorella, “has confirmed that serum levels of albumin are extremely accurate indicators of overall health status and that low albumin levels exist at the onset and progression of virtually every nonhereditary, degenerative disease process, including cancers and cardiovascular heart disease.” A series of studies with rats demonstrated that chlorella supplementation increases albumin levels by 16% to 21%.

  • Some micro-algae have very favorable nutritional profiles for cancer and immune therapies. Spirulina, chlorella, and wild blue-green (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae) provide cellular protection with exceptional amounts of beta carotene (provitamin A) and chlorophyll; dunaliella is the highest known natural source of beta carotene. chlorella, the alga to emphasize in those with the greatest deficiency, stimulates immunity in the treatment of all degenerative diseases by means of the “chlorella Growth Factor” (CGF). These bitter micro-algae often work well with chlorella or spirulina.

  • Chlorella is a one-cell blue-green alga that is highly nutritive as a food and also stimulates the immune system. It increases macrophage activity and has shown antitumor effects. Chorellan is a substance found in chlorella that stimulates interferon production. There are several papers on the prevention and/or inhibition of cancer using chlorella as well as documentation of its DNA repair mechanism.24 one of the many benefits of chlorella is its ability to increase serum albumin levels. A drop in albumin level has many negative effects on the body. Of all the super green foods, chlorella is the one that impresses me the most.

  • A study on chlorella published in Japan in 1992 showed that chlorella has impressive effects on blood chemistry. It increased red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and albumin. The ability of chlorella to increase albumin is vitally important because so many people with cancer have a decreased level of albumin. This decreased level correlates with a poor prognosis; chlorella is a truly important supplement for anyone whose albumin level is low.

  • Chlorella is useful in a wide variety of maladies and conditions, including chronic gastritis, high blood pressure, some forms of cancer, diabetes, constipation, anemia, and high cholesterol. It helps clear toxic metals from the body. Chlorella has antitumor and anti-inflammatory properties and strengthens the immune system. The microalgae support normal growth and help maintain health in old age. They reduce pitta and kapha and, in moderation, are healing for vata.

  • There have been dozens of animal studies on chlorella and chlorella extracts involving immune response to cancer. One such study involved mice given chlorella prior to transplantation of mammary carcinoma. The results were a 70 percent sixty-day survival of the chlorella group versus no survival in the control group. Mice in the control group were also transplanted with tumors but did not receive chlorella.

  • Green foods refers to chlorophyll-rich supplements from sources such as microalgae (including spirulina, blue-green algae, and chlorella) and the young grasses of cereal plants (particularly barley, wheat, and alfalfa). Chlorophyll acts as an antioxidant and may have medicinal benefits against cancer and immune problems. Many people also take green-food concentrates to boost energy levels and physical and mental performance.

  • In 1990, a study on chlorella was performed at the Medical College of Virginia. Fifteen glioblastoma patients were administered 20 grams of powdered chlorella and 150 ml of liquid chlorella, in some cases combined with standard chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. There was a significant increase in health and immune status immediately, and a striking 40 percent two-year survival rate was reflected in follow-up studies. This is extremely rare for this type of tumor, which normally might yield a 10 percent survival rate after two years.

  • Lactoferrin, lipoic acid, and chlorella are the three best supplements I have found for enhancing the nutritional status and raising the albumin level of those with cancer or any chronic illness. Lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein, is a vital element to the human body. It retrieves iron from the foods we eat and delivers it to areas of the body where it is needed. Many people, particularly those with cancer, become anemic because their body is not assimilating iron properly.

  • Green chlorophyll is the main coloring matter in all green plants, and it relates most closely to Qi, the life force. Green plants and algae are high in chlorophyll, include spirulina and chlorella. Foods and herbs that contain high levels of chlorophyll show pharmacological evidence of cancer prevention, perhaps because pigments in green vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli, and lettuce bind with and thus stimulate excretion of cancer-causing chemicals. Even more interesting is a report from one researcher that “Given their exclusive dietary origin, . . . chlorophyll metabolites may represent essential nutrients that coordinate cellular metabolism (through nuclear receptors).”

  • I recommend chlorella to all cancer patients regardless of any other green drink they might use. Chlorella is a small, one-celled algae containing a nucleus and a large amount of chlorophyll. Its protein content is approximately 58% with the balance made up of carbohydrates, all the B Vitamins, Vitamin C and E, amino acids and valuable trace minerals. It has more B12 than liver and a substantial amount of beta-carotene. Because it has a strong cell wall, it requires processing in order to make all of its nutrients available. It is virtually a complete food in itself. It acts as both a powerful nutrient and a detoxifying food.

  • Reducing the stresses of life: Researchers in Kyoto (Journal of Medicinal Food, Sept 2008) gave chlorella over a 16 week period to 17 people at high-risk for lifestyle-related diseases and 17 healthy subjects. They conducted blood biochemical tests and gene profile expression analysis before and after the consumption period and concluded that chlorella significantly controlled gene expression and that this varied with consumption level.

Intravenous Glutathione Cancer Treatment http://fasting.ws/cancer/intravenous-glutathione-cancer-treatment http://fasting.ws/cancer/intravenous-glutathione-cancer-treatment#comments Tue, 16 Nov 2010 01:16:39 +0000 Jenks Biang http://fasting.ws/cancer/?p=675 Other Names: Gamma-Glutamylcysteinylglycine, Gamma-L-Glutamyl-L-Cysteinylglycine, Glutatión, L-gamma-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine, L-Glutathione, GSH, N-(N-L-gamma-Glutamyl-L-cysteinyl)glycine

Glutathione can assist in a holistic cancer treatment. Glutathione will not cure cancer alone but in combination with other herbs, juices and therapies, glutathione will boost cancer treatment effectiveness.

Glutathione is a fairly recent discovery and over the last 20 years, there have been over 25,000 scientific papers written about it. If you type ‘glutathione’ into Medline on the Web you’ll find 44,000 references. 25,000 of these are scientific papers, most from the past 3 years.

Glutathione is a substance produced naturally by the liver. It is also found in fruits, vegetables, and meats.

People take glutathione by mouth for treating cataracts and glaucoma, preventing aging, treating or preventing alcoholism, asthma, cancer, heart disease (atherosclerosis and high cholesterol), hepatitis, liver disease, diseases that weaken the body’s defense system (including AIDS and chronic fatigue syndrome), memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoarthritis, and Parkinson’s disease. Glutathione is also used for maintaining the body’s defense system (immune system) and fighting metal and drug poisoning.

Glutathione is breathed in (inhaled) for treating lung diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, and lung disease in people with HIV disease.

Healthcare providers give glutathione as a shot (by injection into the muscle) for preventing poisonous side effects of cancer treatment (chemotherapy) and for treating the inability to father a child (male infertility).

Healthcare providers also give glutathione intravenously (by injection into the vein, by IV) for preventing “tired blood” (anemia) in kidney patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment, preventing kidney problems after heart bypass surgery, treating Parkinson’s disease, improving blood flow and decreasing clotting in individuals with “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), treating diabetes, and preventing toxic side effects of chemotherapy.

Glutathione (GSH) is a small protein substance inside every cell in your body and it is vital to life. Without GSH your cells would disintegrate from uncontrolled oxidation regardless of how much or what type of anti-oxidants you were consuming. Without glutathione, your body would have little resistance to disease. Viruses, bacteria and cancer would rule the day. GSH prevents your liver from choking with toxic overload. Glutathione is the body’s “master anti-oxidant”, it feeds your white blood cells, including lymphocytes, T-cells and leucocytes and it is your cell’s transport mechanism for ridding the body of toxic material, oxidation breakdown products and damage from pollution.

Without glutathione, all the anti-oxidants that you take are unable to work. When vitamin C or E or lycopene or other anti-oxidants reduce a free radical, that free radical gets handed off to glutathione for transport out of the cell. The same occurs when ultra-violet light, car exhaust, radiation, or lawn chemicals damage a cell; the damage is removed by GSH. A patient, admitted to an ER with an overdose of certain drugs, such as acetaminophen, is given an injection of n-acetyl-cysteine, which serves to rapidly but temporarily boost the glutathione level of the ill patient and remove the offending drug toxins from his system.

Your body’s ability to recognize and deal with foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses as well as cancer cells, depends to a very large degree on the level of glutathione available to your immune system. The greater the supply of GSH, the higher the immune response and the healthier a person can stay.

Many clinical studies have shown that GSH may address some of the major health issues of today: diabetes, heart disease, strokes, asthma, hepatitis, AIDS, and the diseases of aging such as Alzheimer’s and arthritis. The Lancet in 1994 (344: 796-798) showed that low glutathione levels were associated with neuro-degenerative diseases such as MS (multiple sclerosis), ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and others.

Glutathione (GSH): The Body’s Master Antioxidant

Did you know Glutathione also known as GSH, is the most powerful and prevalent antioxidant in your body? Increasing your Glutathione level will naturally increase your energy, detoxify your body and significantly strengthen your immune system. At the same time there are many that claim that oral ingestion of glutathione tablets will also help to whiten your skin.

The Health-Report recommended Patented Formula dramatically increases intracellular levels of Glutathione/GSH and although we make no claims in regard to the whitening of skin, it stands to reason that high levels of GSH in the body will help you to have more youthful and supple skin free of blemishes due to the antioxidant effect on your body.

Our recommended patented natural formula, developed by world renown Dr Robert Keller, provides the proper nutrients needed to promote the body’s own ability to manufacture and utilise glutathione. The formula also aids in liver support, thus helping the liver to function as the main production site and storehouse for glutathione. In turn, your skin being the largest excretory organ the body has will start to glow with health as toxins are eliminated from the body

Group 1 was tested after 6 months of use, while Groups 2, 3 and 4 were tested after only 3 months of the regimen.

The scientific data indicate the formula’s effectiveness in those who are stressed, aging, lacking sleep, or with any prolonged illness. In these situations, the formula stimulates the body’s production of Glutathione to compensate for the body’s accelerated use of it, thereby strengthening your natural defences, markedly decreasing your risk of illness, increasing the body’s ability to utilise whole food antioxidants, whilst guarding against the effects of free radicals on the body’s aging process whilst markedly improving the appearance of the skin. High levels of glutathione in the body has been shown to reduce the appearance of age spots in people as they age.

Increasing Age and Other Factors Reduce the Body’s Production and Utilization of Glutathione.

Scientific research has shown that individuals who have low levels of Glutathione are susceptible to chronic illness and metabolic disease. Scientific research shows that Glutathione levels, steadily decline by 8% to 12% per decade, beginning at the age of 20. Levels of Glutathione are further reduced by continual stress upon the immune system such as illness, infection, and environmental toxins. We now know, a lowered immune system significantly increases the risk of chronic illness and disease. This is a vicious cycle. While you need Glutathione for a productive immune system, a weakened immune system severely hampers the production of Glutathione in the liver.
But did you know that Supplements Containing Glutathione Alone Will NOT Increase The Body’s Glutathione Levels.

It’s pointless to purchase supplements or to eat foods that merely contain Glutathione, because the digestive system breaks down ingested Glutathione and it will NOT be absorbed into your system at any significant level. On the other hand, the Health-Report recommended product provides the proper nutrients needed to promote the body’s own ability to manufacture and utilise Glutathione when it is produced in the liver. This powerful, patented formula, also aids in liver support by destroying environmental poisons, thereby substantially increasing the liver’s ability to function as the main production site and storehouse for Glutathione. An added side effect claimed, is the whitening or lessening of the appearance of age spots over a period of several months.

Intravenous Glutathione Cancer Treatment

Glutathione was discovered in 1888 and introduced into biochemistry in the 1920s.

In the late 1920s and 1930s, there was a burst of research activity on glutathione, particularly in ophthalmology. The reason the research tapered off was the instability of glutathione assays. Being a powerful antioxidant, it is very sensitive to air, light and heat. It oxidizes so fast it is hard to assess its true value before it degrades or oxidizes.

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is a substance made in the cells of our body and is unique because it is both a reducing and a conjugating agent. This means that it is a major antioxidant as a free radical scavenger and an essential component of phase two liver detoxification. It’s an unusual amino acid because it can do two jobs to protect us from toxins: First, it neutralizes free radicals in our body, like toxic compounds from Phase 1 detoxification. Second, it combines with Phase 2 toxic chemicals to form a water-soluble conjugate that can be excreted in the bile and urine. Because glutathione is not broken down easily by digestive enzymes in the intestines, it’s available to intestinal cells for local “first pass” detoxification.

There are also other important functions of glutathione. Besides protecting cells against the destructive effects of radicals and detoxifying substances such as drugs and environmental pollutants, it also maintains cell membrane stability. Glutathione has been found to regulate protein and DNA biosynthesis, cell growth and it enhances immunologic function through it’s effects on lymphocytes.

Ninety percent of the glutathione in a normal cell is in the cell cytosol or fluid, the rest is in the powerhouse of the mitochondria. Doctors specializing in nutritional medicine feel that small decreases in mitochiondrial GSH can result in cell death. Unfortunately mercury such as the material found in dental amalgams, preferentially targets mitochondria and GSH depletion. This is one of the main reasons dental mercury can do so much damage.

The body must manufacture glutathione from other amino acids in the liver for more efficient detoxification in the blood. It is found in fruits and vegetables and is assembled in the body from the amino acids glycine, cysteine, and glutamic acid. Glutathione deficiency comes from poor diet, free-radical stress, and toxic overload. The recommended dosage of glutathione consists of daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables.

GSH plays a role in eliminating many carcinogens as well as maintaining immune function towards providing stronger anti-tumor defenses. Cancer Letters 57: 91-94 1991

Cancer, chemotherapy and radiation therapy all deplete Glutathione. In one study several cancer cells lines including small cell carcinoma (lung), colon carcinoma, neuroblastoma (brain), mammary (breast) carcinoma, and one acute myelocitic leukemia line were tested with either 5FU which is a chemotherapy drug or Glutathione. Apoptosis (programmed cell death) occurred in the Glutathione cells after four applications while those in the 5FU group did not show any apoptosis. This shows that Glutathione helps cancer cells die in a shorter period of time that the chemotherapy drug.

Unfortunately research in cell lines does not always translate into the same action in the human body.

In another study with glutathione ovarian cancer patients were given glutathione with cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug. This study found that more cycles of treatment with cisplatin could be given to the patients because less toxicity occurred. Other side effects of cisplatin including depression, nausea, peripheral neurotoxicity, hair loss and shortness of breath were significantly improved.

In another study with cancer patients glutathione was administered 15 minutes before cisplatin in 51 patients with 229 courses of therapy. No patient developed toxicity and all tolerated the high dose regimen. Kidney toxicity was minimal. The most common side effect was slight nerve damage to the ears. 30 of these patients had ovarian cancer and of these 59% achieved complete remission. 22 of 26 were clear of cancer on a second laparoscopy. This is a high rate of effectiveness as ovarian cancer survival rates are low.

The Research on Glutathione

Glutathione has been the subject of a very large degree of research for several decades although little or no conclusive research exists in regard to skin whitening claims that many websites claim for Glutathione. Glutathione is found in many foods but the body cannot utilise it properly. Some foods contain precursors for Glutathione, such as cysteine, glycine and N-acetylcysteine, but eating sufficient quantities of these foods to markedly increase Glutathione levels is very difficult to achieve. Seeing Glutathione is not well absorbed into the body when taken by mouth or by eating whole foods, many people have tried taking Glutathione intravenously with varied, but mostly poor results.

Some of the foods that contain precursors, such as cysteine, for Glutathione include poultry, wheat, broccoli, eggs, garlic, capsicum, red meat, fish, dairy products, beans, fruits, vegetables, asparagus, avocado and walnuts.

Essentially, Glutathione is a tri-peptide that is made up of gamma-glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine, and is also known as gamma-glutamylcysteinelglycine or GSH. Glutathione has been called the body’s master antioxidant with good reason, as it is found in every cell of the body. Glutathione actively stimulates the action of ingested antioxidants from whole foods and allows the proper utilisation of phyto-nutrients vital for health and longevity. Put simply, if the level of Glutathione in the body is too low, no amount of supplementation with antioxidants will have a marked effect on the health of the individual.

Glutathione Facts

Glutathione is a powerful regenerator of immune cells and is easily the most important agent in keeping the body detoxified and healthy. Glutathione is vitally important in the synthesis of DNA and the maintenance DNA, the synthesis of protein and amino acids, so the body can utilise them effectively. Also glutathione plays an important part in the removal of synthetic chemical toxins and carcinogens and resulting free radicals whilst playing a significant role in optimizing the immune system. In addition, it is essential in protecting cells from oxidisation and activates enzymes vital for the removal of all toxic build up at the cellular level.

Glutathione also has exceptionally strong antiviral effects. High levels of glutathione in the body and subsequently in tissues and blood serum, have been shown to inhibit and prevent the replication of virtually all pathogens. By the same token, if the levels of glutathione are too low in the body, the body is far more susceptible to virus and pathogen invasion.

  • Important role in immune function via white blood cell production and is one of the most potent anti-viral agents known.
  • It is one of the strongest anti-cancer agents manufactured by the body.
  • Glutathione is able to reduce oxidized Vitamin C and Vitamin E back to their unoxidized state.
  • It is used by the liver to detoxify many toxins including formaldehyde, acetaminophen, benzpyrene and many other compounds and plays a key role in Phase I and Phase II detoxification reactions.
  • It is an antioxidant necessary for the protection of proteins; is involved in nucleic acid synthesis and plays a role in DNA repair.
  • It maintains the cellular redox potential.
  • Glutathione levels decrease with age. It is involved in cellular differentiation and slows the aging process.
  • Protects the integrity of red blood cells.
  • Glutathione is involved in maintaining normal brain function.

Glutathione Metabolism

Glutathione is synthesized in the body from 3 amino acids: Cysteine, glutamine and glycine. Cysteine is one of the sulfur containing amino acids used for the synthesis of glutathione, which is very critical in detoxification. N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is the rate limiting amino acid for the production of glutathione within the cells of the body, has mucolytic properties, and is a powerful antioxidant and detoxifier. Some research indicates that NAC is more readily absorbed into certain cells of the body than glutathione and is therefore an excellent synergist with glutathione. The thiol group is the active part of the molecule which serves as a reducing agent to prevent oxidation of tissues.

Reduced Glutathione: glutathione acts as one of the major detoxifiers in the body, but it must be in the reduced form to work properly. Sometimes glutathione will be listed on the label of a product, however it wont be specifically listed as being reduced. The unreduced form is much cheaper and isn’t metabolically active. Riboflavin, niacinamide, selenium, lipoic acid and glutathione reductase are all essential cofactors for generating reduced glutathione. Once the cysteine moieties become oxidized, they combine to form cystine. Cystine taken by itself is poorly absorbed.

Glutathione peroxidase is another compound which is involved in detoxification against peroxides and other xenobiotics. It is synthesized from selenium and cysteine.

Note: Some therapeutics for glutathione can use cysteine, which is considerably less expensive. There are some inborn errors in metabolism that may require glutathione directly. Oral supplementation of glutathione does not necessarily raise tissue levels of glutathione in all cases however and some medical conditions require direct intravenous administration of reduced glutathione.

Other supplements such as vitamin C, selenium and N-acetyl cysteine may have a more significant effect at actually raising glutathione levels in the liver and other tissues. Certain labs can assess glutathione status directly or indirectly.

Glutathione cannot be taken as a supplement because it is broken down by the digestive system before reaching the cells. Intravenous glutathione is the most effective way to raise glutathione levels.

Intravenous glutathione can be used in the treatment of:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Macular degeneration
  • Heart disease
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Cataracts
  • Stroke
  • Lung disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Irritable bowel
  • Diabetes
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cancer

Glutathione Benefits

Immune System

Immune Depressed individuals have lower GSH levels when fighting disease. Lymphocytes, cells vital for your immune response, depend on GSH for their proper function and replication. Cellular depletion of Glutathione has been implicated as a causative, or contributory factor in many pathologies including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cataracts, arteriosclerosis, cystic fibrosis, malnutrition, aging, AIDS and cancer (Bounous et al., 1991). In addition, Glutathione is essential in supporting the immune system, including natural killer cells (Droege et al., 1997) and in the maintenance of T-lymphocytes (Gutman, 1998).

Glutathione and the Liver

Regarding the safety of glutathione in the liver, it is said that the levels of glutathione in the liver is critically linked to the livers capacity to detoxify. This means that the higher the glutathione content, the greater the liver s capacity to detoxify harmful chemicals. Typically, when we are exposed to chemicals like alcohol which can damage the liver, the concentration of glutathione in the liver is substantially reduced. This reduction makes the liver susceptible to damage.

Aging Process

It is known that as we age, there is a precipitous drop in GSH levels. Lower Glutathione levels are implicated in many diseases associated with aging, including Cataracts, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, arteriosclerosis and others. Journal of Clinical Epidemiology 47: 1021-28 1994

Athletes

Strong muscular activity generates oxyradicals leading to muscle fatigue and poorer performance. GSH neutralizes these radicals. Whey proteins promote muscular development. Sports Medicine 21; 213 – 238, 1996. Recent research indicates that propensities toward many degenerative diseases and aging itself are related to the capacity of the cell to robustly recover from oxidative insult. The capacity of a cell to recover from such insult can be determined by measuring the intracellular stores of Glutathione. (Noelle et al., 1981)

Antioxidant Functions

Antioxidants are well documented to play vital roles in health maintenance and disease prevention. GSH is our cell’s own major antioxidant. Biochemical Pharmacology 47:2113-2123 1994

Neurological Disease

Low GSH has been demonstrated in nuerodegenerative diseases such as MS (Multiple Sclerosis), ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s, among others. The Lancel 344: 796-798 1994

Toxins, Pollution, Radiation

GSH detoxifies many pollutants, carcinogens and poisons, including many in fuel exhaust and cigarette smoke. It retards damage from radiation such as seen with loss of the ozone. Annual Review of Biochemistry 52 : 711-780 1983. The liver is the main detoxification organ of the body. In the liver we find very high concentrations of GSH, as it is a major factor in numerous biochemical detoxification pathways. Numerous studies have demonstrated that patients with compromised liver function due to alcohol abuse have significant reduction of GSH in the liver. (Lamestro, 1995)

AIDS

Low Glutathione levels with poor survival in AIDS patients. Much literature has been written demonstrating the role of enhancing GSH levels in AIDS. Proc. National Acad. Science USA 94: 2967-72 1997

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease process that depletes glutathione. Glutathione administered IV was found to lower sorbitol levels in the red blood cells of Diabetics. This indicates that glutathione helps diabetics metabolize sugars in a healthier way. Sorbitol is a by product of certain metabolic pathways that can lead to diabetics developing organ damage.

Glutathione administered IV decreased blood pressure in patients who had high blood pressure and diabetes, and patients who just had high blood pressure. It had no blood pressure lowering effect on healthy individuals. This suggests glutathione may help dilate the vessels and restore healthy nitric oxide function.

Glutathione improved insulin secretion from the pancreas in response to increased blood sugar in older patient with impaired glucose tolerance. Because of this effect glutathione may show in the future to help restore normal blood sugar metabolism and prevent progression to DM.

Fatty Liver

A study was performed in patients who had chronic fatty liver from many different causes including: alcohol and non alcohol related, or HBV, HCV, HDV. This study found that glutathione was reduced in the liver cells of these patients which reduced the cells ability to detoxify the blood. IV administration of glutathione significantly improved hepatic function test during treatment and for several months after it was stopped.

Another study done on rats showed that when glutathione was depleted in their livers the flow of bile was significantly reduced. Without bile flow the liver cannot properly detoxify and the body cannot digest fats. Bile flow was restored when the rats were given IV glutathione.

Parkinson’s

In a 1996 study conducted by the Department of Neurology, University of Sassari (Italy), all Parkinson’s disease patients showed significant improvement and a decline in disability by 42 percent.

Studies have shown that Parkinson’s patients have decreased glutathione levels in the substantia nigra region of the brain. The amount of glutathione depletion seems to parallel the severity of the patients symptoms so people with lower levels of glutathione have more severe symptoms.

These improvements in symptoms lasted for 2-4 months after the IV glutathione was stopped. Glutathione may retard progression of this disease.

Atherosclerosis

In patients with Atherosclerosis IV Glutathione was shown to significantly decrease blood viscosity and significantly increase blood filtration.

Glutathione has been shown to be significantly lower in patients who are older than in patients who are younger. Glutathione levels were significantly lower in diabetics and patients with age related macular degeneration.

Glutathione Main Sources

Glutathione is produced inside the body from amino acids, and consuming foods rich in sulfur-containing amino acids can increase glutathione production. Raw foods are much better at providing these amino acids than cooked food is.

  • Asparagus, broccoli, avocados and spinach are primary glutathione boosters.
  • All fresh raw fruits and vegetables are good for increasing glutathione levels, particularly cruciferous vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage and kale.
  • Raw eggs and fresh unprocessed meat contain high amounts of sulfur-containing amino acids. The meat can be cooked rare if you are concerned about eating it raw.
  • Two spices increase glutathione: garlic and the Indian curry spice turmeric.
  • Whey protein is a good source of sulfur-containing amino acids, but it must be undenatured, which is a non-heated type.

Glutathione IV Side Effects

Glutathione has been used by many doctors to treat diseases that destroy neurons, such as Parkinson’s disease. Intravenous glutathione can be administered by medical personnel when there is a need to eliminate free radicals in a person’s system. Although the side effects are rare, there are specific situations and conditions that may increase the likelihood of unwanted symptoms developing in a patient.

  • A glutathione IV can create very unpleasant side effects when matched with too much selenium. If a person ingests selenium in levels of 400 milligrams or more in a day, the ions from the metal will merge with glutathione and can cause hair loss, white spots on nails or a loss of feeling in appendages, according to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.
  • The Aging Studies Institute says that excessive use of a glutathione IV may cause substantial neurological side effects. The drug can be toxic in large dosages, leading to shivers, shakes, anxiety or depression issues. Use of this chemical should always be closely monitored by a medical professional.
  • It’s possible that some side effects can occur based on an allergy to glutathione such as: tightness in chest and throat, difficulty breathing, rash, hives, swollen or itchy skin.

Glutathione Contraindications

Glutathione should not be administered to patients who are receiving chemotherapy because it may reduce the effects of chemotherapy drugs, and it should not be administered alongside other IV drugs. Additionally, vitamin C can interfere with Glutathione’s benefits.

Glutathione Considerations

  • Healthy individuals or people with kidney and liver problems can suffer digestive problems from the injection. A report in the Journal of Nutrition shows these effects can cause serious damage to a person’s system and cause severe pains, diarrhea and gas.
  • At this time there have been no studies conducted to determine what, if any, side effects occur from the use of glutathione, but zinc deficiency has been reported in long term use of some products containing the ingredient.

Glutathione Special Precautions & Warnings

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of glutathione during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Asthma: Do not inhale glutathione if you have asthma. It can increase some asthma symptoms.

Glutathione Misconceptions

Chronic use of glutathione can lead to increased tolerance of the drug, as stated in the Journal of Nutrition. Within six months, a person needs multiple injections daily to obtain the same benefits as were originally present, which can lead to the likelihood of one of the other side effects taking control of the body.

Glutathione Significance

If there are too many antioxidants in a person’s bloodstream, the effects of a glutathione IV dosage can be completely nullified, according to the Textbook of Cosmetic Dermatology. This means that a person who needs the compound for a condition may not receive any benefits from the injection.

Gluathione IV injection taken along with Vitamin C is the most effective and the best skin whitening procedure. You get a much younger looking fairer skin with an amazing glow. Glutathione actually reduces melanin stimulation and pigmentation of the skin leading to white skin tone or color. Effects of skin whitening depend on how much pigmentation is there on the skin. You can see visible changes in the skin tone after the third or fourth session of IV Glutathione injection.

What is Glutathione Injection?
Glutathione IV is an anti-oxidant naturally present in our body at the time we are born. However, as we grow older the supply of Glutathione reduces as it is used up by our body in cell metabolism. The usage of Glutathione IV injection rejuvenates these cells in our body. This leads to a noticeably fairer complexion, firm and youthful sin. It also aids liver cells to regenerate from damages that are caused by prolonged alcohol abuse or intake of fatty food.

Glutathione IV injection or orally?
If you are taking Glutathione injections, you can use the ones of the drug company Roche of Switzerand. Glutathione IV injections are better and more effective compared to taking it orally. If you take Glutathione orally, the drug is broken down by stomach acids and just 20 percent of the active part of the drug is absorbed by the body. Compared to oral intake, Glutathione Injections take though injections tend to be far more effective as 100 percent of it is absorbed automatically.
Glutathione needs Vitamin C for better and more long-lasting action. When taken along with Vitamin C, Glutathione can make the skin considerable fairer, firmer and much younger looking.

What are the side effects of Gluathione IV with Vitamin C?
People who are above 27 years of age can take IV Glutathione injections. Do not self-administer Glutathione IV injections on your own, this is strictly the work of a professional. Administration of Glutathione IV injection by a trained professional like a doctor is highly recommended. It is a 100 percent safe process but if a person who does not know how to use it, does it on herself or himself, there is a risk of problem like infection, stroke and heart disease.

What is the cost of Glutathione IV?
Glutathione IV is expensive, about $2200. However, glutathione supplements are inexpensive and would boost a juice fasting treatment.

Glutathione Supplementation

Supplementing with Glutathione in the past has been difficult and remains difficult, as scientific research shows that Glutathione taken orally is NOT well absorbed across the GI tract.

In a study of acute oral administration of a VERY large dose of 3 grams of oral glutathione, Witschi and coworkers found that “it is NOT possible to increase circulating Glutathione to a clinically beneficial extent by the oral administration of a single dose of 3 g of glutathione.”

However, tissue and serum glutathione concentrations can be raised significantly by increased intake of the precursor cysteine, or in chronic conditions, by S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe). Glutathione precursors rich in cysteine include N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and undenatured whey protein, and these supplements have been shown to increase glutathione content within the cell. N-Acetylcysteine is a generically available supplement which has been demonstrated to increase intracellular reduced and total Glutathione by up to 92% and 58% respectively.

However, the patented natural formula recommended by the Health-Report team has been shown to markedly increase the levels of Glutathione in individuals suffering chronic illness, by stimulating the liver to produce glutathione, by over 400% after just three months of supplementation in one group of individuals with compromised immune systems.

Mistletoe Anti-Cancer http://fasting.ws/cancer/mistletoe-anti-cancer http://fasting.ws/cancer/mistletoe-anti-cancer#comments Fri, 12 Nov 2010 12:47:52 +0000 Jenks Biang http://fasting.ws/cancer/?p=618 Other names: all heal, bird lime, devil’s fuge, golden bough, and Viscum

Mistletoe can assist in a holistic cancer treatment. Mistletoe will not cure cancer alone but in combination with other herbs, juices and therapies, mistletoe will boost cancer treatment effectiveness.

Mistletoe is a semiparasitic plant that grows on several types of trees, including apple, oak, maple, elm, pine, and birch. It has been used for centuries to treat medical conditions such as epilepsy, hypertension, headaches, menopausal symptoms, infertility, arthritis, and rheumatism.

Mistletoe extract made to fight cancer, mistletoe berries, leaves and twigs are used (dried) to make the extract. Mistletoe extract can be poisonous if consumed in large doses. The berries and leaves can result in poisoning if ingested orally. Mistletoe has been used for 70-80 years though not in this country formally.

Mistletoe Health Benefits

  • Improvement in appetite: one of the worst downsides for healing in cancer patients – improving cancer cachexia.
  • Improvement in pain: they are not sure why this is showing promise but it is enabling patients to live without being obtunded by pain medicine.
  • Improved energy levels: again, with a reduction in pain, it makes it possible for the patient to be more active and thus improves overall quality of life.
  • Boost to the immune system: the evidence is not decipherable yet as to why this is working but patients using mistletoe extract seem to be improving in overall immune health thus putting them at less risk for opportunistic infections.
  • Cancer killing cells: mistletoe contains something called a cytotoxic lectin which is named viscumin. There are also proteins and other mollecules in the mistletoe that act as cancer-killing agents and also promote immune responses. These cells also cause tumor shrinkage and protect DNA in normal or healthy cells for instance during chemotherapy.
  • Mistletoe extract activates the immune system and warms the organism. It improves patients’ quality of life and can even prolong survival.

Mistletoe extract acts at different levels of the organism. The effects described in the following were either found in laboratory experiments on cell cultures or observed in cancer patients.

One major effect of mistletoe extract is that it stimulates the immune system (immune modulation):

It can induce cancer cells to cause their own death (apoptosis), thus helping to stop or even reverse tumour growth. In addition, mistletoe therapy has a direct effect on patients’ quality of life.

Cancer patients taking mistletoe therapy feel better and stronger. It has been shown in several studies that mistletoe therapy can prolong survival.

Mistletoe extract causes a mild inflammation of the skin with fever. This is a desired effect because it warms the body and stimulates its defences.

This is the #1 treatment being used in Europe as an alternative medicine treatment for cancer and is being used by two-thirds of all oncology patients.

    Mistletoe Protective Effect

Mistletoe extract can protect the genes of healthy cells against the harmful effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Mistletoe preparations are usually injected. They are not sold in the form of tablets or capsules. They come in drop form as well, but this application is usually only administered to children.

As a general rule, mistletoe preparations are injected underneath the skin (subcutaneously), starting with very small dosages at the beginning of the treatment. The dosage is increased very gradually until reddening appears around the injection site. This local reaction is not a negative side-effect, but rather a desired response, for it shows that the immune system is reacting to the mistletoe.

The reddened area should usually not be larger than four to five centimetres in diameter, however. If it is larger than this, the physician should be consulted; the dosage might be too high and may need to be decreased for the next injection. If no reaction occurs at all, the physician should be consulted as well. Then it might be advisable to switch to another preparation with a different strength or to choose a different host tree.

In some cases, the reaction to the first dosage can be very strong – even if it is a homoeopathic dosage and for this reason, the first injection should always be administered under a physician’s supervision. Later on it is also possible for the patient, his or her partner, or another care tender to administer the injection.

Each mistletoe therapy is individualised – there is no optimal scheme which works equally well for all cancer patients. Some people even react strongly to homoeopathic dilutions while others need a high dosage or a preparation with a high lectin concentration in order to obtain the desired reaction. Another important factor which influences the selection of the preparation are the knowledge, experience and mindset of the physician. Some physicians have certain preferences because they have achieved good results with them in the past. Others put great store by the range of dosages which a preparation offers.

The course of the disease or the patient’s reaction to the mistletoe preparation can make it necessary to switch from one preparation to another during treatment; thus there is no use in committing oneself to one single preparation.

Now the healing properties of mistletoe are being utilised in the fight against cancer with some interesting research and clinical trials showing that extracts of the plant seem to have an inhibiting effect on tumor growth, and increase the plasma B-endorphin levels which directly affect pain and mood levels in patients undergoing chemo and radiation therapy.

It is in Europe and Asia that most of the research surrounding the effectiveness of mistletoe has taken place. The drug is given as an intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, sometimes in the vicinity of the cancer tumor itself or as an intravenous infusion.

Although clinical trials are sparse and the results from which have proved rather inconclusive, mistletoe seems to combat cancer in two distinct ways.

One is by directly attacking cancer cells by stimulating the immune system into releasing certain chemicals that are damaging to tumors. Trials with one of the mistletoe derived cancer drugs, IscadorM also suggests that this is achieved without causing damage to the immune system cells, a common side affect of many cancer inhibiting drugs. IscadorM was also found to improve DNA repair in breast cancer patients, which is damaged by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Poor DNA repair in white blood cells critical to cancer survival is common in cancer patients and decreases the white blood cells ability to recognize and remove malignancy.

In an experiment conducted on patients with advanced breast cancer, one dose of IscadorM was given intravenously, followed by daily subcutaneous injections for seven days. Blood samples were studied for DNA repair mechanisms in white blood cells. At days seven and nine, there was a 2.7%-fold average increase in DNA repair, with 12 out of 14 of these patients showing improvement.

Encouraging results have also been obtained in trials where patients have shown marked improvement in quality of life and a more positive out look after taking a small non-toxic dose of galactose-specific lectin.

This seemed to activate a non-specific immune defense response and increase plasma B-endorphin levels which is believed to have a moderating effect on pain and mood in cancer sufferers.

One study undertaken on patients with advanced pancreatic cancer showed that although mistletoe did not decrease progression of the disease, it did improve life quality. Patients were given subcutaneous injections of the EurixorTM preparation twice weekly, but no other treatments. Questionnaires filled in by the patients indicated that quality of life was stable, which is surprising in patients undergoing cancer therapies, especially where pancreatic cancer is concerned as it has such a poor prognosis.

Another trial on patients with advanced brain tumor showed that EurixorTM enhanced immune function and improved quality of life during radiation therapy. Patients were randomly split into two groups and given either subcutaneous injections of mistletoe extract twice weekly for three months plus standard cancer treatments or standard cancer treatments alone.

The patients receiving mistletoe showed a significant increase in the number of white blood cells and overall immune function. Further trials seem to suggest that using mistletoe in conjunction with other therapies can decrease some of the side effects of radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Research done in laboratories indicates that mistletoe extracts may even stabilise DNA and prevent it from mutating. It this does prove to be the case, then mistletoe may not only help prevent cancer, but prove useful when used with chemotherapy in avoiding tissue damage.

Tests under taken in Germany prove that the berries of the European mistletoe are only slightly toxic and the leaves not at all. Studies of people, including children, who had eaten the berries showed that the vast majority, although suffering symptoms as diverse as convulsions, headaches, stomach upsets and distorted vision all recovered without medical aid.

Although not lethal, it is not recommended that the berries are eaten or that home made cancer remedies are made from mistletoe extracts.

Mistletoe extracts are prepared as water-based solutions or solutions of water and alcohol. Mistletoe products may be named according to the type of host tree on which the plant grows. For example, IscadorM is from apple trees, IscadorP comes from pine trees, IscadorQ is from oak trees, and IscadorU comes from elm trees. Some users believe that the type of mistletoe extract chosen should depend on the type of tumor and the sex of the patient.

Mistletoe extracts are usually given by injection under the skin (subcutaneous). Less common ways to give mistletoe include by mouth, into a vein (intravenous or IV), into the pleural cavity, or into the tumor. In most reported studies, injections under the skin were given 2 to 3 times a week for various lengths of time.

Many laboratory and animal studies have been done with mistletoe, either alone or combined with other agents. Laboratory studies have suggested that mistletoe may support the immune system by increasing the number and activity of various types of white blood cells. One type of European mistletoe (IscadorQu) used in a 2004 laboratory study showed a strong anticancer effect on certain types of cancer cells but no anticancer effect on other types of cancer cells. While one laboratory study reported that mistletoe extract caused several types of human cancer cells to grow faster, this was not found in other recent lab studies.

Studies testing mistletoe’s ability to stop cancer cell growth in animals have yielded mixed and inconsistent results, depending on the extract used, the dose tested, the way it was given, and the type of cancer studied. Results of a few animal studies have suggested that mistletoe may be useful in decreasing the side effects of standard anticancer therapy, such as chemotherapy andradiation therapy, and that it counteracts the effects of drugs used to suppress the immune system, such as cortisone.

Most clinical trials using mistletoe to treat cancer have been done in Europe. Most study results have been published in German. Although many of these trials have reported mistletoe to be effective, there are major weaknesses in almost all that raise doubts about their findings. Weaknesses have included small numbers of patients, incomplete patient data, lack of information about mistletoe dose, and problems with study design.

Many studies involve using mistletoe as adjuvant therapy in patients with cancer. One retrospective cohort study done between 1993 and 2000 looked at the use of a mistletoe extract (Iscador) as long-term adjuvant therapy in 800 patients treated with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy for colorectal cancer that had not spread. The study found that patients treated with Iscador had fewer adverse events, better symptom relief, and improved disease-free survivalcompared to patients who did not receive Iscador as adjuvant therapy.

In 2002, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), in cooperation with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), began enrolling patients for a phase I clinical trial of a mistletoe extract (Helixor A) and gemcitabine in patients with advanced solid tumors. The trial is now closed and the data is being analyzed.

Before researchers can conduct clinical drug research in the United States, they must file an Investigational New Drug (IND) application with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA does not make information public about IND applications or approvals; this information can be made public only by the applicants. At present, at least two U.S. investigators have IND approval to study mistletoe as a treatment for cancer.

The National Cancer Institute’s PDQ clinical trials database contains protocol abstracts for clinical studies of mistletoe as a treatment for cancer.

Very few bad side effects have been reported from the use of mistletoe extract products. Common side effects include soreness and inflammation at injection sites, headache, fever, and chills. A few cases of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, have been reported.

Although mistletoe extracts appear to be safe, mistletoe plants and berries are toxic (poisonous) to humans. Side effects caused by eating mistletoe plants and berries include seizures, slowing of the heart rate, abnormal blood pressure, vomiting, and death. These toxic effects may be more or less severe depending on the amount and the type of mistletoe plant eaten.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved the use of mistletoe as a treatment for cancer or any other medical condition. The FDA does not allow injectable mistletoe extracts to be imported or used except for clinical research.

According to Wikipedia, Suzanne Somers, actress and New York Times best-selling author has had her fair share of experience with cancer. Now, in her new book, Knockout, she shares her story and interviews with doctors about treatment options. Surgery and radiation had not succeeded with ridding Suzanne of cancer, and her doctor’s orders were for her to undergo chemotherapy. And just like Joan of England, Suzanne of Hollywood shunned chemotherapy to have mistletoe extract cure her.

As The Cancer Cure Website explains: “Mistletoe extracts are marketed under several trade names, most of which are available in Europe. … these extracts must be prescribed by a physician. However, most doctors in the US do not use it … [though] it is allowed by compassionate use. Physicians … can order [mistletoe extracts] directly from European manufacturers.”

Mistletoe extracts are usually injected, but they can also be taken orally if appropriate. It`s important to realize the extract is used because the leaves and berries of mistletoe are poisonous. The extract contains several cytotoxins (cell toxins) which induce tumor necrosis (tissue death) in the cancer cells while programming apoptosis (cancer cell suicide).

Mistletoe extracts stimulate the immune system and increase natural killer cell activity. Chemotherapy dampens the immune system while killing healthy cells along with the cancer cells. Ironically, mistletoe extracts are sometimes used with chemotherapy to protect the DNA of healthy cells.

Negative side effects are very rare, and when they do occur they are usually minor allergic reactions. However, people with heart problems or who are on MAO inhibitor antidepressants are at risk for serious reactions with mistletoe extracts.

    Mistletoe Historical Usage

Mistletoe is a fine example of something that allows folklore and medicine to go hand-in-hand. The myths surrounding the plant were only surpassed by the many health claims folk healers attribute to the mistletoe.

Since the ancient times, the mistletoe has been used for a variety of ailments. The leathery leaves of this evergreen shrub were brewed to make a tea known for its many therapeutic benefits. The sticky white berries of the mistletoe, they did not touch for they recognized early on that they were poisonous. But they made plenty of use of the mistletoe leaves, using it as a remedy for any ailment, ranging from nervous tension to skin sores.

Folk healers in some parts of Europe and Asia used liquid extracts from the mistletoe plant as treatment for cancer, rapid heart rates, high blood pressure, and epilepsy.

    Mistletoe Cancer Historical Medical Usage

Mistletoe was used by the Druids and the ancient Greeks, and appears in legend and folklore as a panacea or “cure -all”. Modern interest in mistletoe as a possible treatment for cancer began in the 1920s.

Extracts of mistletoe have been shown to kill cancer cells in the laboratory and to boost the immune system (the complex group of organs and cells that defends the body against infection or disease). For this reason, mistletoe has been classified as a type of biological response modifier (a substance that stimulates the body’s response to infection and disease). Extracts of mistletoe have also been shown in the laboratory to prevent the growth of new blood vessels needed for tumors to grow.

Ingredients in mistletoe that have been studied for their usefulness in treating cancer include:

Mistletoe extract is studied as a possible anticancer agent because it has been shown to:

    • Have effects on the immune system.
    • Kill mouse, rat, and human cancer cells in the laboratory.
    • Protect the DNA in white blood cells in the laboratory, including cells that have been exposed to DNA-damaging chemotherapy drugs.

    Mistletoe and Tumours

In the early 1900s, it was discovered that the mistletoe is actually a parasite. It grows on many large trees and draws water from the host tree’s vascular tissues. The year 1916 saw Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher relate this idea with the ability of the plant to cure cancer. According to him and as based on the system of thought called “anthroposophy,” tumors represent an error in the regulation of the physical or spiritual body.

In his view, tumors are parasites on the human body, just as mistletoes are parasites on a host tree. Now, since “like cures like”, according to homeopathic principles, Steiner introduced the mistletoe as a cure for cancer. To prove his theory, he diluted extracts of the poisonous mistletoe plant — sticking to the belief that the more diluted the substance, the more potent it becomes – and introduced it to the body with the aim of stimulating the self-correction of the so-called “error” growths or tumors. He believed that mistletoe could encourage the body to gain back a state of equilibrium and regulate the area where tumors had been allowed to develop.

Today, many studies have been published outlining the benefits of mistletoe as a potential cure for cancer. Every year, Germans alone spend an estimated amount of more than $30 million on mistletoe preparations to fight cancer. According to a recent survey, 80% of physicians were inclined to recommend unconventional cancer preparations to their patients and 45% prescribe mistletoe specifically.

    Mistletoe Products

Mistletoe is one of the most widely studied complementary and alternative medicine therapies for cancer. In certain European countries, products made from European mistletoe are among the most prescribed therapies for cancer patients. These products are made and sold under brand names including:

    Common Doses of Mistletoe

Mistletoe comes as dried leaves, capsules, an infusion, liquid extract, tablets, and tincture. Some experts recommend the following doses:

    • As dried leaves, 2 to 6 grams orally three times daily.
    • As liquid extract (1: 1 solution in 25% alcohol), 1 to 3 milliliters orally three times daily.
    • As tincture (1:5 solution in 45% alcohol), 0.5 milliliter orally three times daily.

    Iscador Side Effects

Iscador, also known as mistletoe or Viscum album, is a European parasitic, berry-producing plant that grows on host trees. In 1920, Rudolf Steiner, PhD., of Switzerland, started promoting Iscador as a cancer treatment. Iscador currently is used in several countries as an anti-cancer drug, and is normally given by subcutaneous injection. It is not approved as a medicine by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Iscador causes some side effects and should not be taken by patients with heart or blood pressure problems, or by patients taking blood thinners or MAO inhibitors for depression.

    Fever:

The most common side effect of Iscador injections, mostly low-grade (between 98.6 degrees F and 100.4 degrees F). The fever may be temporary or may last for the duration of treatment with Iscador. The fever also may be accompanied by chills and headaches.

    Gastrointestinal Symptoms:

Gastrointestinal symptoms are common with Iscador treatment, including nausea, vomiting, indigestion, abdominal pain and diarrhea. These symptoms may be alleviated with anti-nausea and other gastrointestinal medications.

    Cardiac Symptoms:

Some patients suffer from chest pains or a slow heartbeat (bradycardia) during Iscador treatment. Patients who experience cardiac symptoms usually notice them within the first few days of Iscador treatment.

    Blood Pressure Symptoms:

Iscador can cause either high or low blood pressure (hypertension or hypotension). These symptoms usually cease when Iscador treatment ends.

    Injection Site Irritation:

Some patients may suffer from inflammation of the skin around the Iscador injection site. This symptom is temporary and resolves itself shortly after completion of the injections.

    Iscador Serious Side Effects

At excessive doses, Iscador is known to cause seizures, coma and death. Therefore, Iscador injections should be prescribed and administered only by a licensed physician. Iscador in liquid or supplement form should never be taken unsupervised as a home remedy.

    Isorel Side Effects

    • Localised reddness at the puncture site can appear.
    • Small increase in temperature of 1 to 1.5 degree Centigrade can be observed which disappear after 1 to 2 days. It is recommended to wait for the normalisation of the temperature before a new injection is administered.
    • In the case of hyperthyroidism , start with low doses and increase gradually. In the case of phlebitis , do not inject in the inflammed areas.

    Isorel Duration of Use

As long as medical is required. There are no known harmful effects , by long term treatment.

    Directions for Nutrition

    • All types of vegetables , above all lactic vegetables (sauerkraut) and lactic vegetable juice (sauerkraut juice). Sour milk, butter milk, cottage cheese , yoghurt , whole meal bread.
    • Avoid white flour.
    • No sugar (perhaps 1 teaspoon of honey per day) , reduce meat consumption.
    • No tinned meat.

The manufacturers of phytotherapeutic mistletoe preparations (Cefalektin, Eurixor, Lektinol) cite the following side-effects: shivering, high fever, heart problems, which usually indicate that the mistletoe dosage was too high. However, this does not necessarily mean that mistletoe therapy should be discontinued.

All forms of mistletoe are best left to professional practitioners, and are not recommended for the home herbalist. Mistletoe should be used only under professional supervision as part of an overall treatment plan. At least three standardized injectable extracts have been studied in Europe: Iscador, Helixor, and Eurixor. These products are not designed for self-treatment and are not commercially available in the United States. Mistletoe should be avoided during pregnancy, since it can stimulate uterine contractions.

Combining herbs with certain drugs may alter their action or produce unwanted side effects. Don’t use mistletoe while taking:

    • alcohol and other drugs that slow the nervous system, such as cold and allergy drugs, sedatives, tranquilizers, narcotic pain relievers, barbiturates, seizure drugs, and muscle relaxants
      drugs that lower blood pressure
    • drugs to relieve depression called MAO inhibitors (such as Marplan and Nardil)
    • Mistletoe should not be used along with heart medicines; the combination creates an increased risk of cardiac slow-down.
    • Important Points to Remember

      • Don’t use mistletoe if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding. The herb may stimulate the uterus.
      • Be aware that all plant parts are toxic.
      • If you’re considering taking mistletoe for cancer, know that medical experts recommend trying conventional treatments first.
      • Keep the mistletoe plant and all extracts and formulations made with it out of reach of children.

      Mistletoe Adverse Effects

The most common side-effect which occurs in connection with the application of mistletoe preparations is a reddening of the skin around the injection site. This is not an undesirable side-effect, however. On the contrary, it shows that the body is reacting to the mistletoe extract by developing a slight inflammation. And this in turn means that the immune system is responding. This is exactly what should be achieved.

This reddening is no cause for worry as long as the diameter of the affected area of skin does not exceed 5 centimetres and the reddening subsides without treatment. In anthroposophical mistletoe therapy such reactions serve as orientation for the physician, helping him or her to find the right dosage of the medicament.

A slight fever is not an undesirable side effect either. On the contrary, it helps the body to warm up and regain its capacity to regulate its temperature.

If the reddening is extremely pronounced, rough patches develop or a strong itching sensation occurs, the dosage of the mistletoe extract must be adjusted as well. And if a high fever (over 39.5 °C) or a rash develops or the patient becomes extremely fatigued and lethargic or suffers from headaches and short-term dizzy spells, these are indications that the dosage of the mistletoe extract is too high. If the concentration is reduced, all of these complaints will quickly subside.

The lymph nodes in the vicinity of the injection site can become slightly swollen. This is no undesirable reaction either, for it shows that the immune system has been activated. The lymph nodes serve as a storehouse for numerous antibodies – thus it is no surprise that they become slightly swollen.

If a patient reacts very sensitively to mistletoe extracts, it is advisable to begin with a preparation using a homeopathic dilution and to increase the dosage very gradually until the desired reaction has been elicited.

In anthroposophical mistletoe therapy, all these reactions help the physician find the optimal preparation in the optimal dosage for each individual patient. It might be that the physician tries out several preparations until the right one for the individual in question has been found.

Allergic reactions to mistletoe extracts rarely occur. Nevertheless they cannot be ruled out. For this reason it is imperative that the first mistletoe injections be given under a physician’s supervision. Intravenous mistletoe infusions must always be administered under a physician’s supervision.

Sometimes small lumps or bumps form in the vicinity of the injection site because the injected fluid has not dispersed into the surrounding tissue quickly enough. This can be avoided by massaging the injection site with a gauze pad in circular motions after removing the needle.

During mistletoe therapy, phlebitis and thromboses sometimes worsen. In this case the treatment should be interrupted until the inflammation has subsided or the thrombosis has healed.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers should only undergo mistletoe therapy under a physician’s supervision. There are no indications that the therapy has any damaging effect on unborn children or infants.

Cesium, a naturally occurring alkaline element has been shown to change the cancer cell in two ways:
      1) Cesium limits the cellular uptake of glucose, which starves the cancer cell and reduces fermentation. It raises the cell pH to approximately 8.0. This neutralizes the weak lactic acid and stops pain within 12 to 24 hours. A pH range of 8.0 is a deadly environment for the cancer cell, which dies within a few days and is absorbed and eliminated by the body.

      2) Another theory regarding the operation of cesium chloride is that it selectively targets tumor cells because many or most types are anaerobic. Anaerobic cells need many times more glucose than normal cells. In order to get more glucose into the cancer cells, the sodium-potassium (Na-K) pumps on the cell wall must run 20 times faster, pumping more sodium out and more potassium in. Cesium acts like potassium so the Na-K pump brings lots of it into the cells. However once in the cell, cesium cannot get out, because it blocks the potassium channels through which potassium usually leaves. Cesium buildup then kills the cell by uncertain mechanisms. From Proposed Common Cause and Cure for All Forms of Cancer by David Gregg Ph.D.

Fifty Patient Study with Cesium Chloride Plus Other Supplements

Cesium chloride treatment combined with other alternative treatments was performed on 50 patients at Life Science Universal Medical Center Clinics in Rockville, MD and in Washington, DC. From April 1981 to February 1984, 50 cancer patients were treated with Cesium chloride and given a special diet. All of the patients were terminal with generalized metastatic disease. 47 of the 50 patients had received maximum surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy before the metabolic regime was started. 3 patients were comatose. 14 patients were unresponsive from previous treatment attempts and their cancer complications.

The diet during treatment consisted mainly of whole grains, vegetables, linoleic acid rich oils (linseed, walnut, soy, wheat germ) and other supplemental food. According to individual cases Cesium chloride was given at daily dosages of 6 to 9 g (this is now considered unnecessarily high). in three equally divided doses. Also given to all the patients:
      Vitamin A-emulsion (100,000 to 300,000 U)
      Vitamin C (4 to 30g)
      Zinc (80 to 100 mg)
      Chelating agent EDTA
      Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)
      Selenium (600 to 1,200 mcg)
      Laetrile (1500 mg)
      Vitamin K
      Mg salts
Other supplements according to specific patient needs.

The additional treatments and supplements makes  this study less than conclusive, however the results indicate a positive treatment response. The dissappearance of pain in all cases within one to three days in indeed a dramatic response demanding further study.

Each patient showed a reduction in the tumor mass even after only forty-eight hours. Of the 17 comatose and moribund patients, 12 died from complications of their cancers but especially the consequences of chemotherapy and radiation. One comatose breast cancer patient recovered so rapidly that after five days she attempted to leave her bed. When stepping out of her bed, she feel and broke a cervical vertebra which led to her demise within another eight days (a metastasis had destroyed her femur and caused her fall).

Of a series of the first 50 patients with a variety of terminal cancers, as of July 1, 1984 the survival time of the 25 survivors, all of them expected to die not later than 2 weeks to 3 months after the treatment was started, is it at least 8 months and up to 3 years and 3 months. One of the most striking effects of the treatment was the disappearance of pain in all patients within one to three days after initiating Cs-therapy. The results demonstrate the rate of effectiveness of CsCl in cancer therapy.

Cesium Cancer Treatment Cost Per Month

Cesium Chloride is a high pH therapy for cancer. Cesium contains the ability to enter cancer cells and embryonic cells, but not normal cells. There have been findings of a number of areas of the world where the incidence of cancer is very low, including the Hopi India territory (Arizona), the Hunza area (North Pakistan), and the volcanic regions of Brazil. Credit is given to the presence of high levels of Cesium (Cs) in food, along with the availability of various supportive compounds such as Vitamins A, C, Zinc and Selenium.

      Cesium Cancer Treatment Cautions

Alkalosis is said to occur when the blood exceeds 7.45. A pH test saliva test strip can determine the pH of your blood. During a juice fast the blood is more alkali and the amount needed to reach the effecting blood pH levels may be less then the dosage used when a person is eating foods.

Cannabinoids, Cannabis Cancer http://fasting.ws/cancer/cannabinoids-cannabis-cancer http://fasting.ws/cancer/cannabinoids-cannabis-cancer#comments Wed, 10 Nov 2010 06:49:49 +0000 Jenks Biang http://fasting.ws/cancer/?p=501 Other names: Hemp, Marijuana

There is a grown body of research showing that Cannabinoids posses anticancer activity and may retard cancer growth, inhibit angiogenesis and the metastatic spreading of cancer cells. The interest in cannabiniod for cancer treatment started in 1974 by a research team at the Medical College of Virginia that discovered that cannabis inhibited malignant tumor cell growth in culture and in mice. According to the study’s results marijuana’s primary cannabinoid THC, “slowed the growth of lung cancers, breast cancers and a virus-induced leukemia in laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent.”

A study published in a 1975 edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, which showed that THC slowed the growth of lung cancer, breast cancer and virus-induced leukemia in rats.

Titled Antineoplastic activity of cannabinoids, this study was funded by the US National Institute of Health, and performed by researchers at the Medical College of Virginia. Despite the promising results, no further research was made, and the study has essentially disappeared from the scientific literature.

In 1985, the Food and Drug Administration approved the marketing of dronabinol, trade name Marinol. This product is THC, synthesized commercially rather than extracted from marijuana. It is approved for use in the treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, and for the treatment of loss of appetite associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. It is classified as Schedule II (of medical benefit, but with high potential for abuse). It remains the only cannabinoid approved for medical treatment.

A 1994 study, which documented that THC may protect against malignant cancers, and which was buried by the US government. The $2 million study, funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services, sought to show that large doses of THC produced cancer in rats. Instead, researchers found that massive doses of THC had a positive effect, actually slowing the growth of stomach cancers. The rats given THC lived longer than their non-exposed counterparts.

The study was unpublished and the results hidden for almost three years, until it was finally leaked to the media in 1997. (CC#17, THC for tumors).

A study published in the July 1998 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that anandamide inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells. Anandamide is the naturally occurring body chemical which is mimicked by cannabinoids.

An article in the October 2003 issue of the medical journal Nature Reviews, explains in detail current research on how cannabinoids can be used to treat cancer and tumors. The article, titled Cannabinoids: potential anti-cancer agents, outlines the human body’s system of cannabinoid receptors, and explains how cannabinoids work to decrease nausea, increase appetite and inhibit pain.

However, most interesting is the section titled Antitumour effects of cannabinoids, where author Manuel Guzman shows that cannabinoids destroy many forms of tumors and cancer cells.

Further, Guzman claims that “cannabinoids are selective antitumor compounds, as they can kill tumor cells without affecting their non-transformed counterparts.” In fact, instead of harming normal cells, cannabinoids “might even protect them from cell death.”

Citing over 100 references of research from scientific and medicinal journals, this article compiles all major studies into how cannabinoids affect cancerous tumors and cancer patients.

In 2000, Manuel Guzman led a study which showed that application of THC destroyed otherwise incurable brain cancer tumors in rats (CC#25, THC destroys brain cancers). Sadly their research could not continue due to a lack of funding (CC#29, No funding for THC tumor research).

Some notable studies into the anti-cancer effects of cannabinoids include:

Cannabinoids block: A study published in the July 2002 edition of the medical journal Blood, which found that THC and some other cannabinoids produced “programmed cell death” in different varieties of human leukemia and lymphoma cell lines, thereby destroying the cancerous cells but leaving other cells unharmed.

In 2003, research into the value of marijuana or its active components for use in medicine is severely limited due to federal laws that restrict its availability. Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug by the Drug Enforcement Administration, meaning that it has no medical use and a high potential for abuse. However, many would dispute this classification, since it has proven benefits in palliative care (treatment of symptoms of medical conditions) and holds promise of other benefits as well. This article focuses on the potential of the cannabinoids as anticancer drugs.

What are cannabinoids and how do they function?
Marijuana is a hemp plant with the scientific name Cannabis sativa. When chemists isolated the primary psychoactive compound in marijuana they named it tetrahydrocannibinol, abbreviated as THC. They subsequently found a related active compound called cannabidiol. Compounds that are structurally similar to these compounds, or have a similar effect in the body are called cannabinoids. Interestingly, cannabinoids are found naturally in the body as well, known as endocannabinoids. Examples are arandamide and arachidonolyglycerol. Researchers have found that endocannabinoids have important roles in pain, in memory, in nerve degeneration, and in inflammation.

In order carry out their effects in the body, the cannabinoids must first bind to specific receptors in the body. Receptors are protein molecules found on the cell membranes. There are two types of cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are associated with the nervous system and are found in abundance in the brain as well as other parts of the body. The psychoactive effects of cannabinoids are dependent on binding to the CB1 receptor. CB2 receptors are associated with cells and tissues related to the immune system, whose function is still not well understood. The binding of cannabinoid to its receptor results in the transmission of signals that effect changes in physiological functions.

Dec. 27, 2007: Cannabinoids may suppress tumor invasion in highly invasive cancers, according to a study published online December 25 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Cannabinoids, the active components in marijuana, are used to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment, such as pain, weight loss, and vomiting, but there is increasing evidence that they may also inhibit tumor cell growth. However, the cellular mechanisms behind this are unknown.

Robert Ramer, Ph.D., and Burkhard Hinz, Ph.D., of the University of Rostock in Germany investigated whether and by what mechanism cannabinoids inhibit tumor cell invasion.

Cannabinoids did suppress tumor cell invasion and stimulated the expression of TIMP-1, an inhibitor of a group of enzymes that are involved in tumor cell invasion.

“To our knowledge, this is the first report of TIMP-1-dependent anti-invasive effects of cannabinoids. This signaling pathway may play an important role in the antimetastatic action of cannabinoids, whose potential therapeutic benefit in the treatment of highly invasive cancers should be addressed in clinical trials,” the authors write.

      Cannabinoids Palliative Effects

Advocates of the use of medical marijuana have long sought its use to alleviate the suffering of patients with severely debilitating and terminal diseases such as AIDS and cancer. Although many patients would prefer to smoke marijuana in order to achieve a more rapid response, physicians are not inclined to approve of this method due to its history of abuse and the known dangers of smoking. Instead, the physician administers the pure cannabinoids.

      • Pain inhibition: Cancer pain originates from inflammation, mechanical pressure from growing tumors, and nerve damage. Cannabinoids reduce pain by inhibiting neurotransmission, and may act locally by inhibiting the release of mediators of pain and inflammation.
      • Inhibition of nausea and vomiting: These symptoms regularly accompany the administration of chemotherapeutic drugs. Cannabinoids apparently act on the CB1 receptors located in the stomach, duodenum, and colon to reduce motility (movement) due to the release of acetylcholine. They may also act on the portion of the brainstem that controls the vomiting reflex. Although cannabinoids are quite effective for this purpose, modern drugs have been developed that are more effective than previously.
      • Appetite stimulation: More than half of the patients with advanced cancer experience lack of appetite and weight loss. Cannabinoids apparently act upon the CB1 receptors in the hypothalamus of the brain that controls food intake, and may act on receptors in nerve terminals and fat cells.
      • Psychological effects: Marijuana is taken for its psychological effects, and cannabinoids properly administered may aid in reduction of anxiety and depression and improved sleep for cancer patients. However, information about these effects is still largely anecdotal.
      • Highly nutritious for the body.
Hemp seeds are rich in minerals and vitamins. They are the only edible seeds that contain gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid vital for human health. The fatty acid ratio present in hemp seeds is perfect for our bodies.
      • Benefits for vegans.
Hemp contains very high quantity of proteins that are required essentially by vegans as they do not consume any animal products and fulfill their protein requirement from plants only. Secondly these proteins are easily digested by their system.
      • Benefits to the heart.
High blood pressure indicates that the flow of blood in the blood vessels is sluggish demanding the heart to work more. Hemp products reduce the inflammation in the circulatory system and improve circulation. This smoothen the blood flow and relieves the heart.
      • Improves digestion
The fiber content present in hemp improves the movement of bowels and treats problems like constipation.
      • Helps in weight loss.
Intake of hemp fills the stomach and reduces crave for foods. Thus regular intake of hemp products help in weight loss.
      • Benefits to diabetics.
Intake of hemp maintains the levels of blood sugar that is requisite for the healthy living of diabetics.
      • Used for the production of paper and related products.
The hemp plant possesses enormous potential for the production of paper and related products like newsprint, stationary, computer paper, cardboard, toilet paper, envelopes, even tampons. According to U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, just one acre of hemp is capable of producing four times more paper as compared to paper produced by cutting down one acre of trees. So why not increase plantation rather cutting down trees.
      • Beneficial for the soil.
Planting hemp in polluted soil lifts heavy metals from such soil. It taps into sub-soil and adds nutrients to it. Thus the growth of hemp plant is beneficial for the soil.
      • Benefits to the environment.
Hemp is capable of replacing all major non-renewable resources. Hemp fiber is more versatile and stronger than any other fiber derived from plants such as cotton and wood. Production of paper demands the cutting of trees all over the world. Hemp is a superior resource for manufacturing paper. Hemp paper is much stronger and durable as compared to paper produced from trees.
      • Benefits for the skin
Skin that contains lower amount of Omega 6 fatty acids and GLA is capable of absorbing natural moisture, and causes dryness. Dry skin causes many problems, like psoriasis, eczema, scaling, cracking, and loss of elasticity. Skin care products that contain Omega 6 fatty acids can help provide relieve these problems. Regular use of hemp oil reduces skin problems and helps to moisturize, soothe and restore the dry damaged skin, thus making it smooth and silky. Hemp oil takes excellent care of hair and lips.
      • Provides low amounts of saturated fats to the body.
Oils those are rich in saturated fats result in the formation of cholesterol deposits, increased blood pressure, resulting in heart attacks and strokes. They also cause a few types of cancers in the body. Coconut oil is the most saturated choice. Hemp seed oil provides the lowest quantities of harmful saturated fats and is the healthiest of all eating oils.
      • Rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Polyunsaturated Fats are essential for the body and when taken with protein foods, these help to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. They are thus helpful in preventing the body against heart problems like, attacks and strokes.
      • Helps in reducing body weight.
Regular intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids helps to increase the rate of metabolic activity in the body. It is also helpful in burning excessive body fats and thus reduces excessive weight.
      • Helps to reduce inflammation.
Hemp oil helps to reduce various kinds of inflammations in the body. Regular consumption of it is there useful in relieving inflammations caused by tuberculosis, arthritis, and other inflammatory diseases.
      • Hemp oil is an excellent fuel.
The limited resources of fossil fuels and resulting pollution because of them created a need of an alternative source that can be used as a fuel. Biomass is one such alternative fuel source, which uses natural elements on the earth and converts them into energy that is required for various activities. Hempseed Oil has now become popular as a biomass source. It is not only efficient, but also cost effective and easy to grow.
      • Provides necessary amino acids to the body.
There are many oils that supply amino acids to the body. These amino acids are building blocks of proteins and are essentially required by the body. Hemp seed provides all the essential amino acids that are required for protein synthesis and thus prevents the body from any protein deficiencies.
      • Helps to enhance the immunity of the body
About fifty percent of hemp seed is made up of a globulin known as edistin. This contributes to the smooth functioning of all bodily functions and activities. The Globulin present in hemp seeds helps in enhancing the natural immunity of the body. The protein from globulin aids in the elimination of antigens or infecting agents from the body. These if remain in the body for long duration cause many kinds of infections and inflammations.
      • Detoxification of the body.
Linoleic Acid and Alpha-Linolenic Acid present in hemp seed have a slight negative charge on them. They thus tend to form thin surface layers on various body parts. Due to this property they are able to carry harmful and toxic substances to, intestinal tract, lungs, kidneys and the surface of skin from where they can easily be eliminated.
      • Helps in the treatment of Lyme disease.
Hemp seed and its oil support the treatment for Lyme disease. Bacteria that cause this disease usually hide in the liver and bile ducts. They have to be removed from there, if the disease has to be cured. Hemp seed enables the proper functioning of these supplements in treating this disease by removing disease causing bacteria.

      Cannabinoids Antitumor Effects

All evidence to date on the antitumor effects of cannabinoids is based on laboratory studies. Mouse studies have shown that lung carcinoma, glioma (brain tumors), thyroid epithelioma, lymphoma, leukemia, and skin carcinoma are sensitive to cannabinoids. In vitro (tissue culture) studies have shown effectiveness against uterine, breast, and prostate carcinomas, as well as neurocarcinoma.

How do cannabinoids exert their effect?
The binding of cannabinoids to their receptors stimulates biochemical-signaling processes that result in the inhibition of tumor cell growth. The processes include increases apoptosis (programmed cell death), cell-cycle arrest (required for multiplication of cells), inhibition of angiogenesis (blood vessel growth within the tumors), and inhibition of metastasis (spread of cancer to other parts of the body).

Why should clinical trials be initiated with cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids have a favorable drug safety profile, and do not produce the generalized toxic effects of most conventional chemotherapeutic drugs. Limited studies have shown that cannabinoid treatment does not result in marked alteration of a wide array of physiological, neurological, neurological, and blood tests.

The major limiting factor in cannabinoid use is their psychoactive effects. Researchers are synthesizing new cannabinoids that could circumvent this problem. Cannabinoids that bind to CB2 or other receptors have already been developed. Clinical trials are taking place in other countries on the use of cannabidiol, since this cannabinoid is less psychoactive. Another possibility would be the development of cannabinoids that do not cross the blood-brain barrier, and thus operate only in the peripheral tissues. Finally, the effectiveness of endocannabinoids could be prolonged if inhibitors of its breakdown could be developed.

In 2009: Researchers in Spain have published results in this week’s British Journal of Cancer showing that certain cannabinoids – molecules so-called because they were originally found in cannabis – could hold promise for treating prostate cancer.

So does this mean that smoking cannabis could treat the disease?
Certainly not. In this paper the researchers were using purified man-made cannabinoids. And they were investigating how to harness the cancer-fighting powers of these chemicals without the mind-bending ones.

      Cannabinoids and Cancer

Certain cannabinoids, such as THC, the main active ingredient in cannabis, have well-documented mind-altering properties. But other cannabinoids have been known for some years to have biological effects elsewhere in the body. Of most interest to cancer researchers is the evidence showing that they can slow the growth and spread of cancer cells, or even kill them.

For example, Cancer Research UK is funding the work of Professor Chris Paraskeva in Bristol, who is investigating the anti-cancer properties of cannabinoids, as part of his research into the prevention and treatment of bowel cancer.

It needs to be stressed that these studies have all been done with purified cannabinoid chemicals – not cannabis itself, which contains cannabinoids along with a cocktail of other chemicals. There is no reliable evidence to suggest that smoking cannabis can treat cancer.

      How do they work?
Cannabinoids affect cells’ behaviour by sticking to receptor molecules on their surface, and triggering a cascade of events within them. There are two main types of cannabinoid receptor, known as CB1 and CB2, although researchers think there may be others out there.

CB1 is mainly found on nerve cells in the brain – so its likely to be the important one when it comes to the mind-altering effects of cannabis. CB2 is mainly found elsewhere in the body, and is the prime suspect for controlling the other effects of cannabinoids on the body.

In nerve cells, cannabinoids sticking to CB1 receptors can lead to changes in the signalling pathways (causing the mind-altering and pain-relieving effects of cannabis). We also now know that cannabinoids can trigger other events within the cell, including halting growth or even kick-starting cell death.

In their recent paper, Professor Ines Diaz-Laviada and her team at the University of Alcala in Madrid studied the effects of two cannabinoids – the catchily named Methanandamide (MET) and JWH-015. These are synthetic chemicals that don’t occur naturally in cannabis, although they are similar to compounds found in the plant.

The researchers tested the chemicals on different human prostate cancer cell lines grown in the lab, and found that they could slow down their growth and trigger cell death. An interesting finding, but which of the two cannabinoid receptors is at work?

By using drugs that block either one receptor or the other, or a genetic technique called RNA interference to ‘knock out’ CB1 or CB2 in turn, the scientists found that the anti-cancer effects of MET and JWH-015 were brought about by CB2.

This is an important finding, because it tells us that it should be possible to develop drugs that target CB2, which will have an anti-cancer effect, but which – crucially – won’t have the mind-altering effects of many cannabinoids.

As a last step, the researchers tested the effects of JWH-015 on mice that had been transplanted with human prostate cancer cells. The chemical helped to slow the growth of tumours, compared with a saltwater control. And blocking the CB2 receptors with a highly-specific drug called SR2 wiped out the effect of JWH-015, proving that it works through the CB2 pathway.

What does it mean for cancer treatment?
Although this work is still at an early stage, it provides a tantalising suggestion that drugs that activate the CB2 receptor could be useful for treating prostate cancer. There’s still more research to be done before we know if MET or JWH-015 are suitable for testing in clinical trials involving patients – and no guarantee that these trials would be successful.

As part of this research, the scientists also investigated the cellular pathways that cannabinoids activate (or block) when they bind to CB2 receptors on prostate cancer cells. By understanding these cellular responses in greater detail, we might discover new targets for cancer treatment.

So can smoking cannabis treat cancer?
No. This is a classic fallacy – assuming that because cannabinoids can kill cancer cells in the lab, then cannabis (containing cannabinoids) must be able to treat cancer. Ed has previously written extensively about this, with regard to red wine and cancer.

This research has been done using man-made chemicals that mimic the compounds found in cannabis, rather than unpurified marijuana. Smoking cannabis, particularly when mixed with tobacco, is likely to increase rather that decrease cancer risk, although the evidence for this is mixed. And, of course, cannabis is classified as an illegal drug in the UK.

On the other hand, Hemp is used for a wide variety of purposes, including the manufacture of cordage of varying tensile strength, clothing, and nutritional products. The bast fibres can be used in 100% hemp products, but are commonly blended with other organic fibres such as flax, cotton or silk, for apparel and furnishings, most commonly at a 55%/45% hemp/cotton blend. The inner two fibres of hemp are more woody, and are more often used in non-woven items and other industrial applications, such as mulch, animal bedding and litter. The oil from the fruits (“seeds”) oxidizes (commonly, though inaccurately, called “drying”) to become solid on exposure to air, similar to linseed oil, and is sometimes used in the manufacture of oil-based paints, in creams as a moisturizing agent, for cooking, and in plastics. Hemp seeds have been used in bird seed mix as well. Hempseed is also widely used as a fishing bait.

Hemp seed oil is considered to be the best nutritional oil for health because its essential fatty acid (EFA) profile is closest to that required by the human body. Essential fatty acids are termed as such because the body cannot manufacture them. Therefore, they must continually be replenished in the diet. EFAs are not stored or used for energy as are other fats. Instead, they are used as raw materials for cell structure and as precursors for the synthesis of many of the body’s vital biochemicals, including hormones and prostaglandins.

Because our brains are made of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, many assume that the only way you should obtain these is by eating such things as fish, which have the long-chain fats. Such plant sources as hemp seed oil, coconut oil, and flax seed oil are made up mainly of medium-chain fats, which non-vegetarians quickly point out. However, when long-chain fatty acids are eaten, they must be emulsified by bile salts in the small intestine before they can be absorbed into the body. Short- and medium-chain fatty acids are absorbed directly through the portal vein to the liver, where they are immediately available to the body.

Hemp seeds are the only natural source to boast of having the ideal ratio of EFAs required by the human body, which is roughly 3:1 of omega-6 to omega-3, the two most important EFAs. Flax oil ranks second as a valuable EFA source, but flax seed is not in the optimal proportion. Rather, it has the opposite ratio – 1:3. After about two years of regular use, flax seed can evenually cause omega-6 deficiency symptoms.

By weight, hemp seed is 30-35% oil, of which 80% consists of polyunsaturated EFAs, specifically the two most important ones – linoleic acid (LA – omega-6 at 60%) and linolenic acid (LNA or ALA – omega-3 at 20%). These are the parent compounds which build longer-chain fatty acids. LNA then converts to DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) – two of the most critically needed forms of EFA and LA converts to AA (arachidonic acid), which has opposite effects of those from DHA.

An excess of AA – the result of too much omega-6 – ultimately leads to such health problems as inflammation and, more importantly, increases blood clotting, which can cause heart attack, stroke, or embolism. In the last 40 years, the American diet has become loaded with excess omega-6 from corn and soybean oil, margarine, and similar processed fats. At the same time, Americans eat 500 mg of omega-3 per day, much less than they need. Consequently, instead of the 3:1 ratio they should be getting, most people consuming the western-type diet, end up with a ratio of 50:1.

Other fatty acids in hemp seed oil include: Palmitoleic acid, Heptadecanoic acid, Arachiditic acid, Eicosenoic acid, Behenic acid, Erucic acid, Lignoceric acid, and Nervonic acid; but it also contains several higher fatty acids. It is one of the only food oils to contain the direct metabolites of LA and LNA. Most notable are GLA (gamma linolenic acid from LA) and SDA (stearidonic acid from LNA), which serve as intermediaries in the formation of longer-chain fatty acids and vital hormone-like prostaglandins in the body. Because of this, hemp seed oil is able to circumvent the impaired EFA metabolism and physical compromise that can result from genetic factors, intake of other fats, aging, and lifestyle patterns.

      Hemp Stem Showing Fibres

The fibre is one of the most valuable parts of the hemp plant. It is commonly called bast, which refers to the fibres that grow on the outside of the woody interior of the plant’s stalk, and under the outer most part (the bark). Bast fibres give the plants strength. Hemp fibres can be between approximately 0.91 m (3 ft) and 4.6 m (15 ft) long, running the length of the plant. Depending on the processing used to remove the fibre from the stem, the hemp may naturally be creamy white, brown, gray, black or green.

The use of hemp for fibre production has declined sharply over the last two centuries, but before the industrial revolution, hemp was a popular fibre because it is strong and grows quickly; it produces 10% more fibre than cotton and 10% more fibre than flax when grown on the same land. Hemp has been used to make paper. It was often used to make sail canvas, and the word canvas derives from cannabis. Abaca, or “Manila hemp”, a relative of the banana plant, replaced its use for rope. Burlap, made from jute, took over the sacking market. The paper industry began using wood pulp. The carpet industry switched over to wool, sisal, and jute, then nylon. Netting and webbing applications were taken over by cotton and synthetics.

      Benefits Of Hemp

The scientific name of hemp is “cannabis sativa.” And it is commonly also known as Marijuana. Since the past thousands years hemp was being used for the commercial production of things like paper, canvas, rope, and textiles. Many years ago marijuana or hemp was banned without taking care of the numerous benefits it offers. However, the recent past, shows the rediscovery of hemp as a plant with numerous commercial, environmental, and economic, benefits which include:

With so many benefits to health, hemp should be made a part of our diet. Plantation of hemp should be increased as it is useful for maintaining quality of environment as a whole.

      Hemp Oil

Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seed of the hemp (cannabis) plant irrespective of the strain of cannabis. Cold pressed, unrefined hemp oil is dark to clear light green in color, with a pleasant nutty flavor. The darker the color, the grassier the flavour.

Refined hempseed oil is clear and colorless, with little flavour and lacks natural vitamins and antioxidants. Refined hemp seed oil is primarily used in body care products. Industrial hemp seed oil is used in lubricants, paints, inks, fuel, and plastics. Hemp seed oil has found some limited use in the production of soaps, shampoos and detergents. The oil is of high nutritional value because its 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 essential fatty acids, which matches the balance required by the human body. It has also received attention in recent years as a possible feedstock for the large-scale production of biodiesel. There are a number of organisations that promote the production and use of hemp seed oil.

Hash oil is made from the bud and leaves of the cannabis plant. Hash oil, not to be confused with hempseed oil, contains a much higher THC content and is known to have greater medicinal properties than that of hemp seed. Hash oil is made by extracting the THC from the cannabis plant, and producing an oil so that the THC can be taken orally, used topically, or vaporized instead of smoked to produce psychoactive effects. The medicinal benefit of the oil is currently under study but it has shown great results related to the treatment of cancers and diseases. Hash oil is considered a Schedule I drug in the United States as a result of the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act. Hash oil containing psychoactive cannabinoids should never be referred to as ‘hemp oil’, as the modern usage of the word ‘hemp’ is reserved for plants that meet the legal requirement of containing 0.3% THC or less.

Hemp seed oil has a relatively low smoke point and is not suitable for frying. Hempseed oil is primarily used as a food oil and dietary supplement, and has been shown to relieve the symptoms of eczema (atopic dermatitis).

      Hemp Oil Preparation

As with all essential fatty acids, hemp oil must not be heated or fried and it is very susceptible to heat and light. The oil is extracted from the seed by a slowly rotating press. The pressure from this press squeezes the oil from the seed and leaves only the remaining ‘seed-cake’. This is always done in an oxygen-free environment, as exposure to oxygen can rapidly depreciate the quality of the oil.

Always ensure that your oils are prepared in such a way (i.e. without excessive heat, light and oxygen) and always store hemp oil in the refrigerator, use quickly, and never heat.

      Benefits Of Hemp Oil

The Hemp plant produces seeds that contain rich quantities of pure oil. The oil present in hemp seeds contains approximately 75 to 80% the good fat i.e. the polyunsaturated fatty acid. Only 9 to 11% of less preferred saturated fatty acids are present in hemp oil. Hemp seeds enclose approximately 40% oil, which combines the benefits of both marine fish oils and edible vegetable oils. Hemp seed oil contains rich quantities of Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids. Along with this, good amounts of Vitamin E make the hemp oil healthier.

Hemp oil has so many benefits to human health that is should be the first choice when buying oil for cooking purposes. By growing hemp on the land, that is lying waste we can produce a crop that can be used an alternative source for producing energy.

      Hemp Oil Storage

Hemp oil is a highly unsaturated oil. As such, it has a relatively low smoke point and is not suitable for frying. It is primarily used as a food oil and dietary supplement, and has been shown to relieve the symptoms of eczema (atopic dermatitis). Hemp oil can spontaneously oxidize and turn rancid within a short period of time if not stored properly; it is best stored in a dark glass bottle, in a refrigerator or freezer (its freezing point is -20°C). Preservatives (antioxidants) are not necessary for high quality oils that are stored properly.

      Dietary supplement

Hemp oil has been shown to relieve the symptoms of eczema (atopic dermatitis).

Hemp Seed contains a large dietary supplement of omega-3, higher even than walnuts which contain 6.3% of n-3.

      Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life. The seeds can be eaten raw, ground into a meal, sprouted, made into hemp milk (akin to soy milk), prepared as tea, and used in baking. The fresh leaves can also be eaten in salads. Products range from cereals to frozen waffles, hemp tofu to nut butters.

A few companies produce value added hemp seed items that include the seed oils, whole hemp grain (which is sterilized by law), dehulled hemp seed (the whole seed without the mineral rich outer shell), hemp flour, hemp cake (a by-product of pressing the seed for oil) and hemp protein powder. Hemp is also used in some organic cereals, for non-dairy milk somewhat similar to soy and nut milks, and for non-dairy hemp “ice cream.”

Within the UK, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has treated hemp as purely a non-food crop. Seed appears on the UK market as a legal food product, and cultivation licences are available for this purpose. In North America, hemp seed food products are sold, typically in health food stores or through mail order. The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that “the market potential for hemp seed as a food ingredient is unknown. However, it probably will remain a small market, like those for sesame and poppy seeds.”

      Benefits Of Hemp Seed

Industrial hemp produces another useful product for use by human population. This very beneficial product from the hemp plant is the hemp seed. Hemp seed and the oil extracted from is considered to be the most perfect and balanced combination of the Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) found in nature.

The seed contains a perfect ratio of Omega-3 fatty acids. The nutritional requirement of Omega-3 or linoleic acid and Omega-6 or Alpha-linolenic acid is in the ratio 1:3. The same ratio is found in hemp seed and oil extracted from it, so long term intake of this seed helps to cure many diseases and deficiencies. Other products containing EFA contain different ratios which may cause deficiencies and the related diseases. Hemp seed is also rich in Omega-9 fatty acids and provides numerous benefits to the body which include:

    • Helps to cure Autism.
The Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids present in hemp seed help to cure and relieve symptoms of patients suffering from Autism.

Hemp is a plant that can grows well without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. This makes the plant safe for consumption and should be included in your diet. Long term use of hemp seed will help you to stay fit and healthy.

    Hemp Seed Protein

Proteins serve such functions as acting as enzymes, antibodies, and the structural components of tissues, hormones, and blood protein. The main function of dietary protein is to supply the building blocks called amino acids so that they can be used to reconstruct other proteins needed for the growth and maintenance of body tissue.

Proteins are often classified as structural (fibrous) or biologically active (globular). Structural proteins include collagen, keratin, and fibrinogen, which are the main constitutents of bones, skin, hair, ligaments, feathers, and hooves! Biologically active proteins are mainly globulins and include such things as hormones, hemoglobin, antibodies (immunoglobulins), and enzymes. Although the body can make globular proteins out of any protein that enters the body, it is much more efficient for the body to make globulins out of globular starting material.

What makes globular proteins so special is that they are precursors to some of the most vital chemicals in the body:

    • hormones (which regulate all the body processes);
    • hemoglobin (which transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitric oxide);
    • enzymes (which catalyze and control biochemical reactions);
    • antibodies (immunoglobulins which fend off invading bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, as well as toxins or antigens as they enter the body).

The total protein content of hemp seed is about 65% of the globular protein edestin, which closely resembles the globulin found in human blood plasma. It is easily digested, absorbed, and utilized by humans and vital to maintaining a healthy immune system. Edestin has the unique ability to stimulate the manufacture of antibodies against invasive agents and is nearly phosphorus-free, which is important for kidney ailments. The other important protein in hemp seed is albumin, which is also a highly digestible protein because of its globular shape. Albumin is a major free radical scavenger and is the industry standard for protein quality evaluation.

Hemp protein contains all 21 known amino acids, including the 9 essential ones adult bodies cannot produce. Proteins are considered complete when they contain all the essential amino acids in sufficient quantities and ratios to meet the body’s needs. The following are the 21 most common amino acids, with 8 essential ones in bold:

    • alanine
    • arginine
    • aspargine
    • aspartic acid
    • cysteine
    • glutamic acid
    • glutamine
    • glycine
    • histidine
    • isoleucine
    • leucine
    • lysine
    • methionine
    • phenylalanine
    • proline
    • serine
    • taurine
    • threonine
    • tryptophan
    • tyrosine
    • valine
    • taurine (considered essential for premature babies)
    • histidine (considered essential for children, but not for adults)

Proteins are potential allergens, which also include soy, dairy, or peanut proteins. However, no hemp seed allergies have ever been reported. Several oilseeds also contain anti-nutritional factors; for example, the trypsin inhibitors in soybeans; but none of these factors are known to occur in hemp seeds. Hemp seeds also contain fewer oligosaccharides, present in peas and beans and which cause intestinal gas.

A significant number of people are becoming allergic to soy products, possibly because most are from genetically engineered crops or grown with the use of chemicals. On the other hand, because hemp seed does not require chemicals or genetic alteration, it rarely, if ever, causes sensitivity.

Hemp seed protein can supply any diet with a vegetarian source of essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fibre, chlorophyll, and a complete, balanced gluten-free source of the essential amino acids.

History reveals the importance of hemp seed protein.

    • In 1881, a German scientist discovered that hemp seed contained edestin, its main protein.
    • In the early 20th century, edestin was one of the most studied proteins in both science and industry.
    • In 1909, the nature of enzymes became known when a British scientist discovered the protein enzyme protease in hempseed. He called it vegetable trypsin. Today, enzymes are indispensible to the food ingredient industry and are used to make many foods.
    • In 1915, the Journal of Biological Chemistry discussed edestin at length, presenting ideas that would later form the basis for protein complementarity and combining, a popular concept among vegetarians. A later issue published a vegetable protein study. In it, edestin was considered suitable as a sole protein source for animals: “Protein feeding in the future will be based rather on the amino acid makeup than on the results of past feeding experiments.” The study also stated that “the relatively large amounts of lysine present in the…hempseed…is especially noteworthy.”
    • In 1932, a patent was issued for a gluing process using hempseed protein. Today, milk protein is used in adhesives.
    • In 1937, the same scientists who first spun vegetable protein for food issued a patent using hemp seed protein to make spun filaments, films, and threads that are similar to silk and wool.

    Hemp Protein Powders

When purchasing a hemp protein powder, look for a brand that supplies at least 50% protein by weight and supplying 15 grams of protein per 30 gram serving. While hemp protein may contain more total fat than many other protein powders, it should be stressed that almost all of this fat comes from the essential polyunsaturated fatty acids Omega-6 and Omega-3. Hemp is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as having what is considered to be an optimal 3:1 balance of omega 6 to omega 3 essential fatty acids.

Unlike hemp protein powder, many soy isolate powders that are not labeled organic are often processed with hexane, a petroleum solvent that has adverse impacts on the environment as well as on human health. The resulting hexane-processed soy is utilized in many soy protein powders, cereals, and bars. Hemp protein powder is produced using only cold-pressed techniques and does not involve the use of hexane in the production process. It is the same technique that ensures valuable vitamins and minerals are not destroyed during processing.

Perhaps the most important difference between soy and hemp seed protein powders is that the non-organic soybeans used in many soy products are often derived from genetically modified soybeans. Hemp is never genetically modified. Hemp foods also have low environmental impacts because growing hemp seeds does not require the addition of herbicides or pesticides.

A pound of hemp seed would provide all the protein, essential fatty acids, and dietary fiber necessary for human survival for two weeks. For this reason it is used in many parts of the world for treating malnourishment.

Here’s an article entitled: Marijuana Protects your Brain by Dana Larsen – Friday, January 1 1999 said that studies reveal that marijuana protects against brain damage from stroke, heart attacks, and nerve gas.

The US National Institute of Health has found that chemicals in cannabis can reduce the extent of damage during a stroke, at least in rats. Experiments with rat nerve cells, and then with actual rats, suggest that THC and cannabidiol, both compounds found in marijuana, can protect cells by acting as antioxidants, and could be useful in the treatment and prevention of stroke, heart attacks, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Researchers are investigating how cannabidiol and other antioxidants can reduce the severity of damage from “ischaemic strokes”, in which blood vessels in the brain become blocked.

During ischaemic strokes, which make up 80% of all strokes, free radicals are released into the bloodstream. These harmful molecules are believed to cause stroke damage, such as paralysis and loss of speech and vision. Cannabidiol has potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, so it can neutralize free radicals and limit their damage.

Meanwhile, an Israeli pharmaceutical company called Pharmos is conducting human clinical trials using a synthetic, injectable version of cannabidiol, which they have dubbed Dexanabinol.

Dexanabinol’s creator is Professor Raphael Mechoulam of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, who discovered THC in 1964, and has been studying cannabis for over thirty years.

Dr William Beaver, who chaired a panel assembled last year by the US National Institute of Health to review the medical uses of marijuana, called Dexanabinol “the most medically significant use ever made of marijuana.”

The human clinical tests began in 1996 with 67 patients in Israel’s neurotrauma centres. About 1000 patients will be involved in the next phase, at a cost of $15 million over two years. According to US medical investment analysts, Dexanabinol showed no serious side effects when administered to healthy volunteers.

Aside from the five million people worldwide who suffer a stroke or head trauma each year, there’s another huge market for Dexanabinol, the US Army. US military tests on rats have shown that those exposed to Dexanabinol were 70% less likely to suffer epileptic seizures or brain damage after being exposed to sarin and other nerve gases. Dexanabinol is effective as both a preventative measure and as an antidote.

The military’s greatest concern seems to be whether Dexanabinol possesses the same psychoactive and enlightening properties as THC and some other cannabinoids. Although THC and cannabidiol both provided equal defense against cell damage, cannabidiol doesn’t have significant psychoactive effects.

Of course, the obvious corollary to this is that if synthetic Dexanabinol can prevent brain damage, then organic marijuana does so as well. So the next time grandpa has a stroke, try and get him to take a few bong-hits before the ambulance arrives. Better yet, give him a hash brownie each evening before he has that stroke. You might just save his life.

    Rick Simpson Cancer Cure Story

After a serious head injury in 1997, Rick Simpson sought relief from his medical condition through the use of medicinal hemp oil. When Rick discovered that the hemp oil (with its high concentration of T.H.C.) cured cancers and other illnesses, he tried to share it with as many people as he could free of charge, curing and controlling literally hundreds of people’s illnesses… but when the story went public, the long arm of the law snatched the cannabis plants.
