  • Doing 21 days of Juice/Water Fasting. Starting November 29, 2010

  • Reasons for Fasting:
Fasting for detoxification, healing, chemical and hormone balancing, weight loss. I hope to get to at least 21 days of water and juice fasting, but I would really like to see myself get to 30 days.

  • Past Fasting Experience:
Previously have done a couple of 3-4 day fasts and a few 2-day fasts within 8 years.

  • Present Diet:
On the fast: water with lemon and herbal teas for detox and healthy fasting. When I cook at home, chicken, fish, rice. Either low carb/low sugar diet or mediterranean diet. Healthier fast food choices, soup and salad when available. Occasional burgers, fries, pizza.

  • Relevant Medical History:
I quit smoking cold turkey after 17 years and it caused an upheaval of hormonal imbalance.

  • Present Medical Problems:
Suspected hypothyroid after quitting smoking. (Many matching symptoms) I had been taking L-Tyrosine supplements, ready to add other supplements but figured instead that I might be able to correct the issues with an extended fast and not keep adding pills and dodging certain foods. I put 40 pounds on almost immediately and couldn't lose. Otherwise I eat mostly healthy and I meditate 5 hours per week.

  • State of Mind:
    Motivated

Today is day 7 of my fast. I started with juice, tea and water, and right now it feels like my body only wants the water and tea. My energy is great.

This morning when I brushed my teeth it seemed my gingivitis was mostly healed. For the first time in years I have almost no bleeding and I noticed in the mirror, my gums look so much healthier with almost no swelling. I hope they will be fully recovered within the next 48 hours.

My skin is soft like a baby, I love it!

I love the healthy skin that comes from the water fasting :)
Congrats on your success! Day 7 is great!

Healthy skin: OMG!…I’m still waiting…I have had several breakouts though…I guess those days that i’ve been tired I havent consumed enough water.

As for the gingivitis..I completely agree…I hadnt thought of that!…wow!…isnt that amazing

    Hi HV
Skin quality can change during a fast. It depends on the toxins in the blood which affect the skin. In general the skin takes on a healthy glow after about 3 weeks on a juice fast. On water it can stay the same and increase in health when breaking the fast correctly.

Thank you for the encouragement! It has meant a lot today on day 8!

I had gotten a message from a friend who is on day 5 of his fast and said he was going to break his fast and it had me feeling down all day, questioning if I should really go on fasting for much longer, missing food…all sorts of stuff. I think a small emotional purge.

My tongue has been coated and just terrible all day. I’m brushing it and drinking a tonic with 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar to 8 ounces of water in my regiment.

I think I am wondering how my metabolism is doing. Normally on a fast, I would have been really uncomfortable with body aches and headaches off and on. I have felt mostly nothing but steady energy the last 8 days and it is getting me down a little bit because it makes me think my body has so much resource of fat or my metabolism is so slow, that it will take me an extra long time to get healed. (Just thinking out loud)

I am grateful to not be in a world of pain like my friend was, but I feel like after eating the junk and processed food that I did just before the fast I would have been a lot more toxic.

According to the site on this page: /juice-fasting/fasting-for-detoxification/detoxification-program

I should be into stage 3 by now and I feel like I never got past stage 2 if that makes sense.

I think tomorrow if my body feels like it needs additional nutrients I will do a green juice drink. For the last 4 days it just feels like I want very watery drinks. I have been on mostly water, tea and very diluted apple juice and the flavors are really not that interesting or exciting. I am tempted to sip vegetable broth. I miss soup. Good thing I don’t have any here. My energy feels good though.

    Hope you are all well.

Today is day # 9 of my fast. I didn’t sleep very well at all last night. The nasty tongue thing was so bad I just couldn’t get rid of it no matter how much I brushed and the taste and secretions in the saliva just made it horrible. Today was a really active day doing laundry and things. My stomach has been roaring all day.

My sense of smell has been heightened, presumably because I’m not using my sense of taste much. Last night hubby was pouring a soda from six feet away and I could smell the soda! I thought that was funny.

My energy level has still been mostly steady. I think my concentration has continues to improve since having a dip on day 2 and 3. I am not feeling like I am losing weight and it is beginning to affect my motivation.

Today has been my toughest temptation day so far with my sense of smell up and my stomach growling. I am looking forward to getting to day 10.

Today has been water with lemon and detox tea.

  6. Wendy says:

Don’t focus on the weight, think about how your body is detoxing. Your tongue is proof that your body is working. Dealing with smells can be hard, but hang in there.

  7. hvcon says:

I hit day 10 and things seem to be going well. Thank you for the encouragement, Wendy. I appreciate it a great deal.

Today wasn’t so bad, but the last 10 days have somehow moved at a snails pace and it seems like it has already been 20! lol.

My next goal is to get to day 14 and see how it goes from there. I am experiencing more and more boredom with just having water and tea and diluted juices. Nothing to worry about for breaking my fast, though.

Today no yucky tongue stuff going on and the tightness in the jaw is WAY less over the past 3 days.

Hope you are all doing great!

Day 11 in the evening I broke my water and juice fast and had soup broth and mixed greens to eat. I didn’t end up with any kind of stomach cramping or anything. I only had the one meal which was dinner.

I was really careful to make sure I chewed my food well. I read a long time ago that food should be chewed about 30 times before swallowing and wow that is a lot but I can see why now after having a better understanding about how the digestive system really works.

I will keep on broth and lettuces/spinach very lightly until Monday and then start again on a juice fast and then go back to a water fast. I don’t plan on doing 3 meals a day. I just want to get some nutrients in. I think my body has been screaming for them.

    • AngelGirl says:

wow!…now that is really interesting…and you had no bad reaction…hmmm…i think i’ll go and get some chicken broth and see if i can keep that down and then monday see if my body can get back into fasting mode…b/c i had juice yesterday b/c i passed out at the market and they gave me coconut juice…and other fresh juices at the farmers market…

i’ll check back on monday to see how you’re doing

  9. hvcon says:

AngelGirl if you can go with vegetable broth I believe that will be the better way to go. I’m not so sure the animal proteins in chicken broth to start will do so well. Just a caution because the chicken broth will contain animal proteins which the body hasn’t had to process in a while while we’re juicing and stuff. It may cause some shakiness and over produce ketones and toxins right away.

Hope it goes ok for you.

I am very surprised at how very mellow my fast has been throughout. I had just one day of a headache in the 10 1/2 days and no blood sugar issues even on the days where I had just water and tea, so I think my metabolism may have needed this kick start. I’ll check in to see how you are going too. So far today I just had the one lunch meal and water the rest of the day. No appetite and not hungry, stomach not growling, and energy good. :)

    Have a great weekend!

ugggh…now you tell me…or i should say i didnt check the comments section…i’ve been vomiting like crazy…i think i’m in the over producing toxins part…OMG!

now I feel like I need to start the entire process all over…I almost want to make a midnight run to Walmart…but i dont think the gatorade would stay down

my stomach feels bloated…and my rings are tight…i will nevvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvver do this again…

i’m gonna re-start the process tommorrow…and get it right…no more fainting…i will make sure that i prepare the night before so there are no fainting spells…like i said earlier…boot camp starting early monday morning…

one quick question…what type of tea are you drinking?

      • hvcon says:

        OMG :( (

I am so sorry. I should have been more careful to make sure my response went in as a reply. (((hugs hugs hugs!)))

I hope you are feeling better. One thing about these fasts is to keep away from protein (even soy) if you’re not doing heavy juicing because it takes more energy to process protein than just about anything else. It really taxes the system.

Today I notice my gums are swollen. I had almost no bleeding still but I guess I need to do more research on the whole gingivitis thing.

The tea I got is actually sold at our WalMart out here and our grocery chain called Giant Eagle. The brand is called Yogi, and they have a package called Healthy Fasting and another one called Detox. I find the Detox one is a bit too strong for me.

        http://www.yogiproducts.com/products/category/herbal-tea/

I have a third one I use from Lipton (also from WalMart) called Caffeine Free Herbal Collection. I use the Lemon, Chamomile and Ginger and Cinnamon Apple out of this package and stay away from the peppermint and orange:

Please let me know you’re feeling better. :/

        • AngelGirl says:

Wow! that’s ironic…I have that tea…it was in the back of the pantry. Nope since church, i’ve been a couch potato… or vomiting…my mom brought over some gatorade…that stayed down…

i’ve already told my body [lol] no stuff tommorrow…you’re getting back in place

i was able to get in a wheat-free cookie and bit into a grape…

Updating: I took 3 days off and at this point, I’m back at 2nd day “on” and continuing. I guess it would be day 13-ish. Getting back to juice and water was easy. No headaches, no appetite really. Last night I had a difficult time sleeping. I have bad knees and my left knee is the worst. It was giving me a lot of trouble and it’s hard to say if it is the weather or if it is because of repairs but I sure hope it is because of the latter.

I have had puffiness under my eyes the last two days too and gums are still swollen *sigh*.

At this point I am noticing some weight loss and it seems to be happening more rapidly which helps keep me motivated. I have the gross tongue thing again but not as bad as before…yet. We’ll see in a couple of days.

My energy has been elevated lately. It is so difficult to sleep!
