  • Doing 3 days of Water Fasting. Starting October 26, 2010

  • Reasons for Fasting:
    Weight loss

  • Past Fasting Experience:
Lost 10 kg by cutting back to one evening meal/24hr.

  • Present Diet:
Weak black tea & Green tea. (for comfort)

  • Relevant Medical History:
    Colitis (in the past)

  • Present Medical Problems:
    Nil

  • State of Mind:
    keen

  • Questions:
I don't understand how consuming thousands of calories of fruictose daily constitutes a 'fast' ? Why not just sit in front of a sugar bowl & spoon that white rubbish into one's stomach as well ? C'mon guys. A calorie is a calorie & FRUIT JUICE is PACKED with calories. Would you eat 8 oranges ? No. Then why drink the equivalent which is full of fructose. Google fructose. - pure carbs - sugar ! You're going to lose nothing but the fluid loss that passes with the diahorrea. Oh, & why does God come into fasting ? Because the word is used in the Bible so much ? Because Jesus did it ? Maybe you think he invented fasting ? Can't one be an Athiest, or Hindu or believe in Faries at the bottom of the garden and fast ? Or does it work better for people on their knees ? Duuuuuh.

Oh & to correct the fields above.
    I’m in my 50′s.
    Weight 80kg (175lb)
    Height 5′ 8″
I’ll be fasting till I lose 15 lbs (willpower permitting) & I’m assuming that it will be 10lb fat (which I’ll keep off with regular daily cut backs to 1 meal) & 5 lb water (which will go straight back on).
I lost the 10kg (22lb) over the last 2 1/2 months of reducing meals to just an evening meal. Quite a big evening meal sometimes & cups of tea (only) during the day. Then I discovered information on fasting.

You have a lot to learn mate.
No one is saying that you have to believe in any faith to fast?
I wish i could say that you have lots to learn in life but i cant, coz your in your 50s !
you have logged onto a fasting site not a weight loss programe. [by reducing your food intake you are not on any fast that i have heard of...???]
    Keith.

Not sure what point you’re making Keith but it’s not too ‘Christian’ to be unnecessarily insulting.
Does that matter to you ?
I’ve read the Bible, maybe more than you, & considered it’s contents very thoroughly. I’ve also read conflicting points of view – nothing to do with the ‘Devil’s’ influence (because I think he’s another figment of human imagination) and kept my mind OPEN. I bet you haven’t read or thoroughly processed the logic of ‘Dawkins – God Delusion’ for example – maybe because you’ve been taught, and probably believe, that ANY other opinion to your religion is “The work of the devil”. Clever piece of brain wash propaganda that one.

So are you telling me that fasting involves consuming thousands of fructose calories of fruit & vegatable juice instead of solid food ? Sounds just like a fad ‘diet’ of some sort to me.

Quoting Keith – ‘[by reducing your food intake you are not on any fast that i have heard of...???]‘

    Dictionary.com – ‘Fast’ (2)
    ‘verb – (used without object)
    1. To abstain from all food
    2. To eat only sparingly or certain kinds of food, esp. as a religious observance. etc etc’

Read the blogs Keith. Almost invariably Bloggers ‘Reason for Fasting’ INCLUDES weight loss. I’m fasting for weight loss and the hope of other medical & health benefits that might also result.

I just can’t get my head around the religious implications of fasting. Is there some suffering involved that provides God with some sort of evidence that you’re in ‘his team’ ? What exactly is the religious implication of fasting ?

On another blog I read how the ancient civilizations all fasted – so if our ancestors did it we should learn from them. Hmmmmm – They also sacrificed (murdered) women, children and infidels in the name of sacrifice to appease their God – your God maybe too ? They nailed the ‘son of God’ to a piece of wood so somehow – HOW EXACTLY ? ? ? – his suffering would attone for other people’s sins. Duuuuuh ! Don’t even try to explain that piece of primitive stupidity to anyone capable of clear thinking. Yep, we should leard from that mumbo jumbo too ! God help any other poor delusional bugger then who thinks that God impregnated his mother.

Please ‘Learn On’ Keith – or just keep repeating the senseless dogma. I’m not trying to insult you Keith but if hearing another point of view – that might be different from your religion – insults you, then so be it. It’s a choice YOU make.

Because I wasn’t very clear in my blog I’ll reiterate- I dieted by fasting daily for 23 of every 24 hours & lost 10kg in 2 1/2 months. Then I came across a book “Fasting as a way of life – Alan Cott, M.D.” and realised that a total fast might not harm my body as some opinions have us believe. Now I’m on a total fast from solid food. I hope I can continue untill I can wear that expensive tailored blue shirt that a friend bought me without my love handles or pot belly showing. lol

Except for water, weak green tea & occasional weak black leaf tea with very little milk I’m on a total fast. This way I don’t feel so deprived & I’m toughing it out. It’s not that tough actually.

Day 4 – Not hungry ! Bathroom scales got quite a surprise this morning. Bet they’re still internally checking their circuit boards. lol

    Hi plasticbaldy

Do you think that i am a christian?
Yes i have read the bible and do not have to conflict on points that are not relevent to anything whatsoever, including belzabub!

Isn’t it sad to go to your grave without ever wondering why you were born? Who, with such a thought, would not spring from bed, eager to resume discovering the world and rejoicing to be part of it?

My religeon does not spring from any “man or book”
My spirituality” and prophetic wisdom” will never come from words of any human who trys to seek wisdom from a non excistant thought of [nothingness] and write a book?… thats how i feel about Richard Dawkins.

Historical records tell us that fasting has been used for health recovery for thousands of years. Hippocrates, Socrates, and Plato all recommended fasting for health recovery. The Bible tells us that Moses and Jesus fasted for 40 days for spiritual renewal. Mahatma Gandhi fasted for 21 days to promote respect and compassion between people with different religions.

For much of human history, fasting has been guided by intuition and spiritual purpose. Today, our understanding of human physiology confirms the powerful healing effects of fasting.

Yes i understand that a fast can be restricting food intake!
I say to that [WHATS THE POINT?]…..Its basically a food diet.

You made yourself clear to me when you quoted “Dawkins.

You should try a pure water fast to experience what you mock in your last message !
Trust me my friend you will never insult me.
Best wishes on your food fast
    Keith.

    Thanks for the reply Keith.

There is nothing ‘sad’ about believing that we were not born for a reason. I find it sad, but I understand, that some people need to believe that there is a ‘reason’ for their pathetic, oxygen wasting, parasitic – or even high achieving and usefull – existence. Just like some people need to believe that there are faries at the bottom of their garden. Yep, they’re deluded but somehow happy in their ‘knowledge’. I like to think that happiness doesn’t require fairy stories.

We will both go to the grave irrespective of weather we needed the comfort of believing that there was some ‘great plan’, which, BTW doesn’t look to me like anything more than primitive man’s answer to his inability to deal with his mortality. I live a full, rewarding & happy life & it’s definitely not ‘sad’ with the cognisance that it will one day end.

In an entertainingly vacarious sort of way I hope I’m wrong and that there is an afterlife so that I can watch the cumuppence for all the ‘Christians’ who couldn’t wait a few more mere mortal years and found new life partners instead of waiting to be reunited for eternity with their loved one in ‘heaven’. It’ll be a hell of a place (pun definitely intended) when their patiently waiting betrayed husbands/wives/lovers vent their jealousy on thier ‘after life doubting’ (why else would they repartner for 5 minutes in the scale of eternity) life partners. ‘No jealousy in heaven’ I hear you say ? So, we won’t be human ? We’ll be Zombies ? We won’t be in the image of God ? Not at all like him ? But he is the expert at jealousy – just read the bible ! I think he might have even invented jealousy.

You’re a ‘prophet’ now Keith ? Hmmmmm As for Dawkins “non excistant thought of [nothingness]” – Have the balls to read it. There are some things in his words that have resulted in some of mankind developing from woman & child murdering (ritualistic sacrificing) primitive, supetstitious, knuckle draggers to having achieved our current level of modern (yep, I agree. We have a long way to go) intelligence. Those things revolve around thought. – Questioning (not allowing others to stop us from questioning & having the balls to question everything), hypothesis testing – prediction & research for the purpose of aquiring new knowledge & correcting previous knowledge as distinct from those of us who close our eyes, block our ears & continue to spout the writings of our ignorant superstitious ancestors.

Mahatma Ghandhi was certainly a great man, who BTW used to keep his piss in the refrigerator so he could drink it the next day, but sadly his fasting for 21 days ‘to promote respect and compassion between people with different religions’ was marginally more effective in the ‘respect & compassion by others’ goal than the man who had himself nailed to a piece of wood in the illogical belief that his sacrifice would somehow atone for the sins of all the other human beings whom God had made in his image and ‘were all born as sinners’. Hmmmmmm The idea of faries at the bottom of my garden isn’t looking quite so silly right now. lol

However fasting did seem to keep Gandhi slim & healthy though.

Your words – “Yes i understand that a fast can be restricting food intake!” KEITH ! Get with the programme. Duuuuuh ! A fast IS – BY DEFINITION – restricting food intake. It certainly ain’t going out into the desert or up a mountain for the purpose of ‘hearing voices’. In modern day this sort of ‘fast’ will result in you being certified (scheduled), taken away by men in white coats – “Don’t bother bringing anything but your pyjamas”. lol

OK, I’m on Day 7. Still not hungry but I still have to banish the thoughts that associate food with the pleasure of something to look forward to. So far I’ve learned that hunger is something different to ‘looking forward to eating’.

I’ll take your advice Keith and relinquish my 100 daily dribbled calories of milk in my drug (cafiene) infused tea but what’s your point ? Am I going to stop mocking superstition after 21 or 40 days of this ?

Lets get back to my early point of this blog. Should I injest 5000 calories of boring fructose instead of at least enjoying 5000 calories of tasty pizza (there goes my imagination in the form of association of food with pleasure again lol) or even tasty healthy fresh food, in the name of a religious fast ? Will I rewrite Moses work on tablets of stone if I drink enough orange & carrot juice ?

Thank you, sincerely, Keith for calling me ‘Your Friend’ and for not being insulted. You shouldn’t be insulted. You didn’t invent mumbo jumbo superstitions and you are obviously open minded and patient enough to be willing to digest the words of & feel unjustifiably (but compassionately) sad for a ‘happy’ non-believing faster.

As for ‘Clausso’. Is that the best you can do ? If you need to barrack then maybe you could do it on a football blog site. Feel free to chime in with intelligent comment any time you like. And turn the light on mate. Do you live in a tunnel ?
