I commend your ambition, while you know your body better than others remember this is for you and not for a number of days. Not that you need to be told how to fast, it is my suggestion, when you are overcome with hunger that that will be the time to begin eating, and if the 40th day comes before then – good on you. This is encouraging for me to watch and I look forward to reading what you are going through and am hopeful you will document this journey with dialog on the blog.

    Hi al
Yeah your right on what you have said, but sometimes the fast is broken before detox is compleat, then you have the fear factor that sets in when you do a long water fast, you can have a look at my water fasting videos on

I am on day 28 of a 40 day water fast.
    Blessings Keith.

    Hi,

That is really impressive. I recently fasted 21 days with water, tea, some clear broth, and on some days I had half a glass of juice. I was incredibly fatigued the entire time and very hungry. But I am also hungry when I am eating.

Anyway, how do you keep from your blood sugar dropping too low? I wanted to water fast 10 days last year but after 3 days my blood sugar had dropped to 48 and I was very dizzy.

    Thanks,
    Kristina

    • keith101 says:

      Hi Kristina
your body uses up its sugar stores on day 3, thats why you feel week and dizzy, after day 3 the body goes into ketosis, using fat cells for fuel, your body adapts as you go into differant phases of a water fast.

It is very hard for people with a fast metab to go on a long water fast but not imposible!
      Blessings Keith.

  4. bkcarlton says:

    Hi Keith,

Thank you for the reply. I don’t think I have a fast metabolism and would love to try a water fast again to eradicate fungal/bacterial overgrowth.

So are you saying after roughly 3 days, and an initial dip in blood sugar, once my body switches to using fat cells for fuel my blood sugar will come back up? I knew there are certain changes that occur after 3 to 4 days but what you mention did not occur to me at the time. Instead I had a tiny bit of honey in some water with fresh lemon juice. Maybe if I had stuck it out a bit longer things would have normalized?

On a different note, do you think fasting 24 hours every week for 3 weeks then three days the fourth week is too much? That would mean three 24-hour fasts plus a three day fast every month.

    Thank you,
    Kristina

  5. keith101 says:

    Hi Kristina
give yourself 4-5 days for your body to adapt to a water fast if that is what you choose. I was the same on day 3 late on in the night for a piece of chocolate to get some sugar in my body, but i held of and was fine on day 5.

If you choose to alternate your fast 24,hrs then a 3 day fast, thats fine but your body will never go into ketosis.
    Best wishes Keith.

    • bkcarlton says:

      Hi Keith,

I follow the Fast-5 plan with zero carb so I would think I am in ketosis. The 24 hours every week plus 3 days a month was in addition to eating Fast-5 AND doing one or two longer fasts a year. Does that makes sense? I just don’t want to mess up my metabolism by doing this. Wasn’t sure if that’s too much fasting throughout the year.

      • keith101 says:

        Hi bk
Your body will not go into ketosis unles you go past the 3 days.
Fasting 1 day a week is very healthy for you to do, i have read quite a bit into this,
I have a friend who is on the fast-5 diet and swears by it.You are spot on by keeping your carbs to a bare minimum.

Even by having zero carbs your body will never go into ketosis.Any fibers in your diet has to be digested,
Juice faters never go into ketosis
        Best wishes Keith.

Hello everyone, awhile ago I posted that I would be embarking on a 40 day water fast. However for some reason I could not follow through on my plans. A year ago, going on a fast was very easy for me, but these days I find it hard to stay motivated.

About a year and a half ago I was in a healthy weight rage and suddenly I went into depression and gained a lot of weight. My main reason for fasting is to change my eating habits and to find myself again. I think finally, after all this time, I think it is its time to take things serious and I should start fasting. I know fasting has a lot of benefits and I hope to fast as long as I can. Tomorrow I am going to start my water fast and I will post my experience daily. If anyone wants to join me, that would be great. Once I complete my first week of the fast, I will post my weight loss and how much my start weight was.

Hi Amanda, Why don’t you start your fast by using just raw foods for a few days, followed by fresh juices. Then you will be in the proper mindset to continue on to water, if desired. Or stay on a juice fast for a few weeks.

I try to stay as close to fasting as I can. I usually fast one day a week, one week per month, and a 30 day or longer fast once a year. I stay flexible as to exactly when I fast. And I never fast when I’m not prepared mentally.

Setting small goals makes us feel rewarded, and in control of our fast. I would say that the mental aspect is the hardest to conquer. But, we “can” sneak up on our bad habits and get back on track.

Also prayer helps me to get my spirit in tune with my body, and mind. After a prayer or 2, I feel the Holy Spirit letting me know if it is the right time. And “IF” I do end a fast early for some reason, I know another fast will be around the corner to get me back on track!

Remember to reward yourself with what you’ve achieved. Even if it’s a few days! We are only a failure if we do NOTHING at all!! Planning and preparing for one, is part of the process. So, ENJOY your fast. And you are a step ahead, because you’ve been there before and know the joy! I’ll keep you in my prayers for peace and motivation. God Bless! Ron

  14. amanda123 says:

Hi Ron, Thank you so much, your information was very helpful. You are right I should start small and then try to do a longer fast, when I am mentally prepared. I was suppose to fast today, but I decided to eat fruits today as a post-fast. Then 2morrow I will start a short water fast maybe for 7 days and see how that goes and reward myself once I complete the 7 days, rather than feeling guilty for not fasting longer.

Then after few short fast, I can do a long fast. Fasting is definitely a battle between the mind and the flesh. Its really hard to stay focus when your mind is telling you to eat and your body is craving. I know that atleast I am going in the right direction, rather than sitting and worrying what I am going to do. So tomorrow for sure I am going to start fasting, if I cannot do just water, then maybe I will drink some juice, just to get me through the day. I stopped eating today at 6:00pm estern time. I will continue to pray and ask God to help me through this journey.

Today is day 3 of my fast. I was thinking to rotate between water and juice fast. First day of the fast I had some juice and on second day I only drank water and today I drank some juice. I think Starting tomorrow I am just going to drink water only and no more juice. I feel pretty good, just have few headaches and feeling really bored. I realized fasting is not the problem, but boredom is. I just want to fast as long as I can. My main goal is to fast strictly on water only. Now that I am on day 3, continuing the fast wont be a problem. At the beginning it was hard for me to start a fast, but now that I have startrd, I wont stopped until I feel healthier and refreshed.

  16. bella83 says:

Amanda, I totally agree on fasting not being the problem, but boredom. I would always find something to eat when I got bored in my non-fasting state. Now I realize that I’m just being lazy.

Hello everyone. I am new to this site. I just finished a 3 day water fast. Surprisingly it was not difficult for me. The reason that it was not difficult is that I was home from work and that I was constantly reading about nutrition and/or fasting either in books or surfing on the internet. Also, I had prepared myself before the fast by eating only two small meals 2x a day for three days. Fasting is now part of my lifestyle. I have thought about it and I think that water-fasting two days on the weekend everyweek will be what I will do. I have chosen this method of fasting because not eating will help me to step aside from the things that normally occupy my time and thoughts.

  18. kdejarnet says:

I’m just finishing up day 2 of fasting. So far I’ve been listening to my body and water fasting but I plan to start juicing tomorrow. Looking forward to getting through tomorrow as day 4 is when my hunger goes away then it’s smooth sailing from that point on. :)

  19. amanda123 says:

I have beeen trying to fast for the past few months. I usually make it to, day 4 or 5 and give into temptation. But I will not give up, I will become healthy again. I will keep doing it until I succeed. Today is day 3 of my water fast. I only drank water, in about 5 hours day 3 will be done. For the past few months I did short 3 day fast.

My start weight was 265 and I am 5’8.
My current weight is 249, I lost a total of 16 pounds.

Just a year ago I weighed 160 pound, due to deppression I gained a lot of weight. I am hoping to find myself and do some soul searching on this journey.

Hi amanda! I love your resolve with all the “I will”, statements in your message! Sounds like you are on your way! Great!! God Bless, Ron

  21. amanda123 says:

Thank you Ron. Today is day 4 of my water fast. Day 4 is about to end in about 4 hours or so. Today I found temptation to be at its peek. I woke up with terrible hunger and headache. I always find day 4 to be the toughest day to get past. But I tell myself I can do this and remind myself all the cleansing and healing my body is doing.

  22. amanda123 says:

Day 5 of my fast is going to be done in about 2 hours. Today I feel really good. My hunger seems to be in under control. I do not feel tempted anymore, but I am sure temptation might come and go. I have to stay strong and focus on how good I will feel once I finish the fast.

Right now I am water fasting, but if I get to the point where I might break, I will take a sip of orange juice to slow down the detoxing. I would rather go on a long fast and benefit from cleansing, than be fixed on water only fast. I might rotate between water and juice. The main goal is to get healthy. Both water and juice fasting will heal the body. I know I can do this! Every day I picture myself at the end of the fast, how I would feel and what an accomplishment it would be.

Whenever I feel hungry I say to myself, this is not really painful at all, this is something I have to face and become stronger. What is painful is being unhealthy and depressed. Fasting is reversing all the damage I have done to my body.

I have a good feeling about this fast, I know I am going to finish it. I realized that doesn’t matter if you go on a strict water fast and in the middle take a sip of juice. It is important to be focused on the cleansing part and not worry about the number of days or the type of fast it is. My only strengthen is god, without him I don’t think I would have made it this far, I praise the lord, the glory goes to him.

I will weigh myself again on day 8 and post the results.

  23. Ron says:

    Hi amanda! Amen to that!!

Keep in mind that after a long, detoxing fast you can never go back to your old ways.

Not that you would want to but….Your body will not tolerate the toxins in the TAD (typical american diet) foods anymore! You will actually make yourself sick. I have had to stick with mostly raw foods or I pay with stomach pain, headaches, diarrhea or constipation. And just a general lousy feeling. My friends who fast also go through this. The price we pay for a clean body, is maintaining it with proper nutrition!

It’s a good thing, because when I stick to my diet I feel great, and people tell me I never looked better! Go for it! Praise the Lord! Ron

  24. amanda123 says:

Hi Ron, thank you. You are right it is important to change your life style after a fast, otherwise all this effort will goto waste. When I finish my fast, I plan on breaking it with watermelon and switch to a raw food diet. I also plan on joing a kick boxing class after I am done fasting. I find it hard to goto the gym everyday. I need something different and fun.

In about an hour, I will be done day 6 of the fast. Today I had a very bad headache and felt I could not go on. So I took a sip of orange juice and felt a lot better. Now I have this heart burn that is annoying me, I tried drinking a bit of warm water, which is helping a little with the burn. I cannot believe day 6 is done and day 7 is starting. At the begining the time was going very slow, but now its actually going pretty fast. I wish everyone who is fasting goodluck and to stay strong.

  25. amanda123 says:

Day 7 is almost done. Tomorrow I will weigh myself and see how much I lost. I do not feel hungry, but feel extremly bored. I really don’t know what to do. I feel the days are going slow. I just have to remind myself that I got this far and I should not stop the fast under no circumstances. I know this is worth it, the end results are going to be amazing. This fast can transform my life and I could be a lot happier.

  26. amanda123 says:

Today is day 8 of my fast. I am feeling pretty good. I still get hunger pangs. I realized that whenever I drink water, I am stirring up my stomach acids, which in returns gives me heart burn. To prevent heart burn I drink water very slowly, instead of gulping it down.

My start weight was 265 pounds, I lost 10 pounds by doing two 3days water fast.

When I started this fast I weighed 255 pounds. I weighed myself and I am now 240 pounds. On this fast I lost 15 pounds.

Since I started fasting I went from 265 pounds to 240 pounds. Thats a total of 25 pounds lost so far.

My goal is to get under 200 pounds and then take 1 week break and start another fast. I will weigh my self again on day 15.

  27. amanda123 says:

Unfortunately I broke my fast today, I feel terrible. But I am not going to feel too guilty. I am going to start my fast again tomorrow from day one again. What matters is I keep trying. I am not going to let one day mess up, put me into guilt, then I end up eating too much for a week. I am just going to start another fast tomorrow. This fast was definelty worth it I lost about 15 pounds.

  28. amanda123 says:

Hi everyone, I have decided to fast again. The last time I fasted I was not able to reach my goal. I took some time to think about everything and I think I am ready to give this another shot. I am going to fast until end of this year. I will be starting my fast tomorrow. If anyone would like to join me, that would be great. Last time I fasted my starting weight was 265 and when I finished my fast it was around 240. Today I weighed myself and I am at 245. I managed to keep the weight that I lost off. I only gained about 5 pounds, which probably was water weight. Total weight loss from previous fast was 20 pounds. I will post my weight loss on a weekly basis. I am only going to do a strict water fast.
