Jessi: 7 days of Juice/Water Fasting

  • Jessi Kingan, 24 years old Female, weighing 67 kg / 147.4 lbs, 68 in /172.72 cm tall, Buddhist. From Ao Nang, Thailand

  • Doing 7 days of Juice/Water Fasting. Starting October 24, 2010

  • Reasons for Fasting:
Weight loss, cleansing, breaking bad food habits

  • Past Fasting Experience:
14-day Master Cleanse in 2008, 10-day raw fruit & vegetable diet December 2009

  • Present Diet:
Vegan. Just finished 8 days of eating only raw fruits, some vegetables, and soya milk. Have been feeling lethargic and yesterday, after 8 days of fruits and vegetables ate a few slices of fried banana and sweet potato in the morning after a long walk. In the afternoon, after a short bike ride, made a milkshake with raw cashews, raw sugar, soymilk, banana, and a few pieces of dark chocolate. Ate less than half of it an hour before going on a 10-km run and felt like death: wasn't sure whether I wanted to vomit or evacuate my bowels. Took a rest and drank some water and ate a steamed bun filled with vegetables and mushrooms and walked for 20 minutes before continuing the run. Had to stop at a toilet along the way and had explosive diarrhea when I made it home. Felt fine after that. As a result of what I'm viewing as my body's protest to the junk I put into it yesterday, decided to fast for 7-10 days instead of resuming "normal" eating patterns.

  • Present Medical Problems:
Acne. Had it since I was 13. Recently started taking birth control with anti-acne properties to combat it but it doesn't seem to have made a noticeable difference so far (6 weeks).

  • Questions:
Between daily physical activity in the form of running or biking, and just living in a hot climate, I sweat a lot. Do I need to worry about replacing the salts I am losing from this?

    Hi,
Juice fasting with fruits and vegetables will provide your body with the organic salts it needs in the form of organic chlorides of sodium, calicium, potassium, magnesium etc and also sulphates, phosphates, iodides, bromides, fluorides of the same elements. Add a little sea vegetables ( sea weeds ) to get the full spectrum , You eat really well and juice fasting will be a joy to you. hope that helps , regards Noor

    Hi Noor,

Thanks for the information. It’s very helpful. What kind of seaweed would you recommend? It’s easy to get dried nori—would you recommend just adding it to the juicer with the vegetables, eating it, or blending it into a powder to add to juices?

    Thanks…

    Day 1:
Felt good, not really hungry (had been eating only fruits and vegetables, mostly raw, for over a week prior). Went for a short run in the morning, followed by 20 minutes of hula hooping with a weighted hoop, and had lots of energy. Had some lime juice with cayenne pepper and a bit of honey in the morning, coconut water and sugar cane juice in the afternoon, and more of the lime juice with cayenne pepper and honey in the evening. Finished a 15-minute bicycle ride (after the coconut water and sugar cane juice) very sweaty and almost jittery, like I’d just had a bunch of coffee, but my nerves calmed down quickly enough.

    Day 2:
Made some green juice in the morning from broccoli greens, bean sprouts, apple, and longan. Not hungry so had only water in the afternoon. Went for a long walk and a 40-minute run in the evening and felt great. Made a blended juice shake from fresh frozen pineapple and a bit of banana with raw sugar in the evening.

    Hi,
Nori seaveg is fine , just powder a little bit of it and blend it into juice , the Organic halogen elements in seaveg will feed the glands ( Organic iodine for the thyroid ) and also help deep clean the bodies trillions of cells.
Try some carrot and apple juice as I find it really gives you loads of energy. hope that helps , regards Noor

Hi Jessi, You might want to cut out the soya and cane sugar. You really don’t need them added to your raw diet. Also, you are combining a lot of different food items. It would be almost impossible to figure out whats giving you trouble. Try to limit your mixes to 2 items at a time for a while. At least until you target what is giving you trouble. You will get salt naturally in the raw foods. Lack of salt “may” be more of a concern during water fasting. Ron

  5. Jessi says:

    Hi Ron!

Thanks for the advice. My food issues are psychological/emotional more than physical. I have no food sensitivities that I know of, and nothing has been causing me any problems. My selection of juices so far has been based on what I had on hand rather than a deliberate selection of those ones in particular. Same with the soy—I was tracking long distances by train (and waiting in stations when I wasn’t) and couldn’t get fresh fruit or veg or 100% juice.

Noor, I tried some of the nori today and also got some purple laver to try.

Day 3: Basically water fasted today—had a glass of juice with ground dried chili pepper flakes (closest thing I have to cayenne). It didn’t taste too spicy so I added more (probably about 1T in total). Then tried a glass if water with apple cider vinegar. Not sure which it was, or some unholy combination of the two, but I felt sick to my stomach immediately, ignored the feeling, and ended up throwing up a few minutes later and feeling queasy for about an hour afterward. Only had tea (oolong with jasmine, second infusion so most of the caffeine is gone) after that. Bicycled 50+ km in the evening and felt great (though a little slow to get moving, as on the run yesterday).

I think I must have a very slow metabolism, because I weighed myself yesterday morning and according to the scale I actually weighed 1 kg MORE than two days before when I finished the fruit and veg phase. I take this to mean that either I was dehydrated when I took the starting weight or that I’m retaining fluids or something now, and I have seen my weight fluctuate by as much as 2 kg in a single day depending on when I weigh myself, so I don’t make much of this. Is it likely that I’m retaining water because of the fast, or do I just have a very slow metabolism and there just hasn’t been much noticeable weight loss? If this is the case, is there any way to kick-start it (I’m already exercising fairly regularly, though not quite every day like I used to), or should I just accept and embrace having a slow metabolism (hey, I’ll save money on my food bill because I won’t have to eat as much! :) I’ll keep checking the scale every 2 or 3 days, but I am also taking measurements. Weight loss is a goal, but it’s not critical, as I am confident that I can use the opportunity that the fast provides as a tune-up to my eating habits and make the changes I need to take me the rest of the way. I’m just listening to my body right now. At the moment I weigh 67.3 kg (yesterday), but I’d like to get to somewhere between 61 and 56 eventually.

  6. Jessi says:

Finished day 4 yesterday. Woke up at 6:00 am after about 5 hours of sleep. Had the water from a fresh young coconut in the morning, then only water and tea (decaf oolong with jasmine and hibiscus flowers) the rest of the day. Power was out for most of the day so no way to make juice or tea… Had some nori. Feeling good. No major problems, no weakness or headaches or anything, only a slight bit of hunger.

Hadn’t been planningtp water fast, but I’m feeling good and just going to listen to my body. We’ll see how it goes. Haven’t made it to a scale yet but maybe today.

  7. Jessi says:

Day 5 finished, mostly water with the exception of half a cup of orange juice this morning (had some oranges starting to go bad so I decided to juice them. Had some herbal tea, Ginger tea, and soda water with lime, which was a really refreshing treat. Tired and sluggish in the morning and periodically sleepy throughout the day while studying, but managed to keep it at bay. Back is a little stiff.

Weighed today and I’m back down to 66.3 kh, down 1 kg from 3 days ago but it’s the same weight I was before I started the actual fast, somehow. I have started my period so may be retaining water because of that, not the fast. I dunno.

    Hi jessi
As you know water retention is norm with your periods so dont worry.
Drinking sodaa water will create gasses in the gut making you feel bloated.
lower back stiffness is normal on a fast, your weight will fluctuate during a fast so don’t feel dishearted.
    Best wishes Keith.
