  • Maggie Smith, 45 years old female, weighing 84 kg / 184.8 lbs, 66 in /167.64 cm tall, From Canada's North, Canada CA

  • Doing 30 days of Juice Fasting. Starting March 7, 2011

  • Reasons for Fasting:
A year ago I got sick and ended in intensive care. I nearly died from a combination of a serious lung infection, and asthma. I had never had asthma before this, but have been left with chronic asthma that's prevented me from cross country skiing when it's cold, and enjoying the outdoor activities I used to do. At the same time I developed multiple chemical sensitivities and muscle spasms, pain and stiffness. All this literally seemed to come on overnight (although I highly doubt it) I see a Naturalpathic doctor, and he encouraged me to buy an infrared sauna. He believed that is would cure the asthma by detoxing me. I bought a beautiful, hand made toxin free sauna and use it daily. I makes me feel good, but it has not cured any of the problems described above I've been using alcohol as a crutch, and now have gotten to the point where I'm drinking wine every night. I never thought I'd be that person Naturally, my weight is way up - to around 180 pounds or higher. I don't weigh, but the mirror doesn't lie, I look and feel terrible I want to start over, reset things and have a new beginning. I've been wanting to do a 30 day fast for a long time, and I just woke up and said, this is it I have a lot of work to do in the next 30 days. I'm a management consultant and my work is project based. I'm also doing an MBA, so I have no shortage of things to do. Being busy is going to help me I think. I have no traveling or many meetings this month. I am ready to do this

  • Past Fasting Experience:
I've done 4 previous 5 day fasts, and several 3 day ones. I have an excellent juicer - the Omega 8006 It's rare that I get cleanse reactions. Usually I'll have tiredness and a headache in the first couple of days and that's about it I plan to continue to use my sauna daily to help the detox along

  • Present Diet:
Crap - wine, diet coke (six cans a day) bread, starch, etc. Stupid and I know better

  • Supplements:
I want to begin taking the amino acid supplement that was compounded by a pharmacy for me. It's based on the results of my amino acid testing, which showed me to be very deficient in tryphophan and phenalynine, as well as several other essential amino acids I stopped taking them because I hated the bitter tasting powder

  • Relevant Medical History:
Just the problems listed above, and severe anxiety that's kept me almost housebound for over a year

  • Present Medication or Drug Usage:
Asthma and thyroid medications. Was on high dose of pregnisone for asthma for 4 months of the last year Finally got off the Adivan I was taking for severe anxiety and the sleeping pills about 6 weeks ago

  • State of Mind:
    Confident, determined and optimistic

  • Questions:
I'm worried that a 30 day juice fast will slow down my metabolism. Any thoughts on that? Also, March is here and with that the best cross country skiing of the year. I don't want to miss out on something that has always provided me with the happiest moments of my life. Are there any limitations on what I can do?

    Hi Magie
Yes a 30 day juice fast will cure asthma. I have seen one complete cure without further problems. Your diet will have to change to maintain the healing. You body will become more efficient but just give your body what it needs and listen and exercise. But if you return to your diet, weight will come back.

Hi Tom, thank you. This is heartening to know

Can you tell me what part of my diet is the culprit? Is it the wheat, dairy, the wine or all of it? I want to make sure that I maintain the long term benefits of the fast

Maggie, Stay away from diet pop! It is POISON! You are better off drinking the full calorie version… and that is really bad too. I am inclined to think it is even worse than the wine. I am one who isn’t against wine from time to time, and think it can be beneficial if you are eating the way you shouldn’t be. But if you are eating a diet rich in raw vegetables and fruits, you shouldn’t need it. Wheat and dairy can be really bad. I don’t know all your symptoms, but do some searches on gluten sensitivity and celiac disease and see if it fits.

Juicing shouldn’t effect your metabolism too much. You are still consuming calories, you are just concentrating the nutrients.

      Hi Wendy, thank you!

I start my 30 day fast today and I am so pumped! Normally I dread fasting but this time I really feel excited and positive about it. I think if I were doing just for weight loss I wouldn’t feel the same way. I think it helps too that spring is coming and the days are so much longer. When I end on April 6 the snow with be melting and the swans will have arrived. Yesterday I bought all my vegetable seeds to start inside before moving to the greenhouse. Very exciting

I hear you on the diet pop. That is exactly my naturalpath’s sentiment on that as well. He thinks it’s worse than the wine

I had food allergy testing done (antibody) and I showed no sensitivity at all to dairy and mild for wheat. I really want to get off the wheat and see if it helps. I love dairy and would like to keep it in, but I have read it increased mucus secretion, which is bad for asthma

Thank you for your thoughts and reassuring me that my metobolism won’t crash. That is nice to know

I’m going to post regular progress reports

For now I’m off to my infrared sauna to sweat

      Thanks Wendy!

I had a fantastic first day yesterday. Normally day one of a fast is brutal because I’m so hungry, but this time it was far easier than any other fast I’ve done. I really had almost no hunger

I also slept great which is unusual for me in the beginning of a fast, when I would often get night time hunger

This morning I woke to the twinges of a headache and a very coated nasty tongue. I’m expecting some caffiene withdrawl symptoms, and hopefully they won’t be too bad

  3. Wendy says:

I am glad your first day went so well. How did today progress?

  4. northerner says:

Hi Wendy, thanks for asking. I had a fantastic day. No headache or cleanse reactions like I expected. I’m not sure if the difference this time is the infrared sauna. I do hour long sessions and it feels so good

No real hunger either. It’s strange. I exercised again today, 30 minutes on the eliptical trainer, and a half hour walk. I have a lot of energy

I’ve started exploring going raw after this at least for a few months, and incorporating a weekly 24 hour fast. I really want to make some long term changes and get rid of the asthma

I was looking at a raw website today and of course looked at the recipes. Everything looked so good. It makes me wonder why when I eat a normal diet all I want is starch. Why doesn’t raw look good then?

Anyway, thank you for checking in Wendy. All is well so far:)

I forgot to mention one cool thing that happened today. When I was working out I actually broke and sweat, and was able to get my heart rate up into my training zone. For the last couple of months my oxygen delivery system has been so impaired, I couldn’t get my heart rate above 120. If this continues, I’m going to be very happy
