Fasting for Healing

Our body is an amazing structure and each part has its own detailed function. The structure of tube contains millions of miles of microscopic tubes while the membrane consists of thousands of square feet of delicate membrane surfaces. The circulatory system is 60,000 miles long. The lungs contain 300 billion capillaries. The surface area of the colon is 2,200 square feet. People who eat the typical North American diet are not ingesting nutritious, health-giving food; instead, what enters the delicate tube and membrane structure is devitalized mucus-forming food, heavy proteins, cholesterol, and big sticky long-chain fat molecules. The body is denied from the healing process because it must continually work at digestion and the daily cleanup of nutrition is being stripped from processed foods.

Ingestion of mucus-forming foods clogs the body’s microscopic tubes and membranes. This allows cellular waste to build up in the lymphatic system, increasing the chance of illness. Fasting dissolves or eliminates this internal mucus, allowing the body’s natural cleansing process to occur. During fasting, it is normal for the nose and throat to pass sticky mucus, clogging the sinuses. Following your first meal after fasting, white strands of mucus may be found in the stool.

One factor in healing through fasting is the removal of cellular waste. Three to eight hundred billion of your cells are being replaced daily. Approximately one quarter of your cells are either dying or becoming old and needs to be replaced. Unless your body gets rid of the dying cells, it cannot build new ones. In the fasting state, the body scours for dead cells, damaged tissues, fatty deposits, tumors, abscesses, all of which are burned for fuel or expelled as waste. Fasting dissolves diseased cells in a systematic manner, leaving healthy tissue intact. For this reason, fasting intensifies healing and tired organs are repaired rapidly.

The butterfly is a magnificent example of catabolism (tearing down) and anabolism (building up). During metamorphosis, the butterfly’s muscles and organs dissolve into a thick, yellow solution. All internal structures are torn down and rebuilt. It emerges from the chrysalis and forms into a new creation. The miraculous aspect of metamorphosis is that it occurs while fasting. All the substances needed for rebuilding come from within.

During fast, a metamorphosis occurs. The body undergoes tearing down and rebuilding damaged structures. There is a remarkable redistribution of nutrients in the fasting body. It hangs on to precious minerals and vitamins while catabolizing old tissue, toxins and inferior materials. The end result is a thorough cleansing of the tube, membrane and cellular structures. This process of cleansing and rebuilding has made fasting famous for its ability to rejuvenate, heal disease and give the body a more youthful tone.

Eliminations during the cleansing process

  • Dead, dying or diseased cells
  • Unwanted fatty tissue
  • Trans-fatty acids
  • Hardened coating of mucus on the intestinal wall
  • Toxic waste matter in the lymphatic system and bloodstream
  • Toxins in the spleen, liver and kidneys
  • Mucus from the lungs and sinuses
  • Imbedded toxins in the cellular fibers and deeper organ tissues
  • Deposits in the microscopic tubes responsible for nourishing brain cells
  • Excess cholesterol

The Result

  • Mental clarity is improved
  • Rapid, safe weight loss is achieved without flabbiness
  • The nervous system is balanced
  • Energy level is increased
  • Organs are revitalized
  • Cellular biochemistry is harmonized
  • The skin becomes silky, soft and sensitive
  • There is greater ease of movement
  • Breathing becomes fuller, freer and deeper
  • The digestive system is given a well-deserved rest

To heal illness, the body must pull all of its resources toward cleansing and repairing by removing appetite and reducing or stopping digestion. Wounded animals will fast, emerging to eat only after their wounds or broken bones have healed. This is the reason why there is little desire to eat food when sick—the body wants to focus all of its resources on cleansing.

In the body, the first stage of cleansing removes large quantities of waste matter and digestive residues. The first few days of a fast or fruit diet can be rough due to the quantity of waste passing into the bloodstream. The second stage is the cleansing of mucoid, fat, diseased and dying cells, and the more easily removed toxins. As the fast continues, the cleansing process becomes more thorough. After the second day of the fast, there is little desire for food. The tongue becomes coated and the breath foul as the body excretes waste through every opening.

The last stage is the cleansing of toxins that have been accumulating in your cells from birth, and in the microscopic tubes that carry vital elements to the brain. Cleansing of the last layer is only possible through a combination of juice fasting, water fasting, and a healthy diet high in raw foods. To overcome a severe disease like cancer, it is important to continue through a series of fasts, to the point where the full, scouring action of catabolism removes the disease from the tissue.

    Great Article Tom,

I posted an adapted version on my site with a link back to you.

Thanks. See you in the Philippines soon.

I am going to start a fast again (I tried a bit ago – and I didn’t stick to it the way I should have). I’m 27 and I have sorta hit a rut. I feel overwhelmed with personal things and work, and it is showing through me not having control over specific areas.

I am wondering if fasting would be a good way to reset my mind and help get me out of this ‘depression’. I am not clinically depressed – but I can deffinately see that I am getting sucked into a downward spiral and it is getting harder to break out.

What do you recommend I do? juice fast, as I have never really fasted before.

Any suggestoins would fall and open ears.

    Thank you,

    • Tom Coghill says:

      Hi sagori286
Yea fasting is the best for ruts and depression especially if you work on rebuilding your thought life. Start with juice for at least three days then try water. Water can be hard if you have demands such as work. It can also be hard emotionally as a high level of toxins in the blood can make you feel off and depressed for periods.

    Hi Sagorie286
When i was really at an all time low “depressed” and feeling that the world was against me.
10 days on water only pulled me out of the pit that i was in but as Tom has mentioned 3 days on juice first would be advisable then water fasting if your work in not to demanding on you?
For me it was though there was a chemical imbalance in my body.
Water fasting was the most amazing thing iv ever achieved to relieve depression but you must focus mentally.
My water fasting “Stats”… last year 2-10 day fasts, this year 1-30 day fast and have just finished a 10 day fast 2 days ago.
Long water fasts would not be advisable if working.
Let me know what you decide and we will be here to guide you through your fasting journey.
    Best wishes Keith.

Thank you both for your advice. I have to drive about an hour to work and one back to my house – so that is my only concern for a water fast (can’t be light headed behind the wheel).

I have been doing a juice fast for two days now – slightly modified because the second day I got a bit dizzy behind the wheel, so ate a few raw almonds and an apple. Today 10/23 I am starting the 100% juice fast. Would it still be good if I did the juice fast for the next week though Halloween – and then maybe try the water fast for as long as my driving isn’t effected? Is there a way to still get the results of the water fast with it modified?

I already feel better 🙂 after just two days. I sleep better and get up on time for work 🙂 have to be out the door by 6:30am to ge to work on time. I really appreciate the help and the quick responce – it helps me stay on track (was sorta losing my will today). I will keep you posted and will come to you when I feel my will being tested.

I really want to have the clarity that I already am starting to feel now – for the rest of my time here on earth 🙂 this website is so helpful. i would like to come to a retreat some day, money the only issue – but isn’t it always. Are there any places in the States that would have something similar?

      thanks again Tom and Keith

        Hi Sagori286
You can have a look at my 10 day water fast diary on fasting progress reports.
The only reason that i got light headed was if i stood up to quick or exzerted myself to much.
juice/veg fasting, you should be able to work normally depending on your intake!
        hope this helps you.
And for a retreat Toms retreat in Sagada is very easy on the bank account, and would be far less expensive than your home in America
Tom will advise you better than i can.
        Best wishes Keith.

Not sure where the appropriate place to post is?
My 13 yr old daughter has been very ill for the past few days. She went to bed on Sunday feeling perfectly fine. Woke up Monday & only got out of bed to vomit. She’s had a fever up to 103.5 & hasn’t had anything by mouth except for a little water. So she is kind of unofficially fasting. She’s been in bed since Sunday & needs help getting out of bed to use the bathroom. She says her back & shoulder hurt. She has no interest in food yet. How long can she go without food at the young age of 13? I should point out that she normally overeats. She will eat almost non-stop & often sneaks food. So refusing food is very unusual for her. She is 5’5 & now down to 129 lbs, 13 yrs old. What should I feed her when she is ready to eat again? She has started to ask for apple juice from anything but green apples. Should I give her juice or will it make her sicker? Her fever still comes & goes, but she hasn’t vomited since monday morning.

    • Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Nikki
The reason that animals and people do not experience hunger during illness is that the body triggers a state of catabolism for the fight against infection or disease. Hunger returns after the body starts to win against the infection. The best is fresh fruit or veggies juices and let the body do its work. You can go many days without food and not suffer any physical damage. Taking lots of probiotics and help the body battle the infection.

  5. Nikki says:

oh also, should i try to get her out of bed some? or let her body rest? what is best? i think all the time in bed might be contributing to all her aches & pains?

  6. Nikki says:

    Thanx Tom!

I am more thankful now than ever for you & for your site! God bless you my friend!
My daughter asked for help out of bed this afternoon. She was tired of her bed & sat on the couch for awhile. I gave her a little apple juice diluted with water & soon she could get up & walk across the room without help. She seems to be feeling better. I’m going to run to the grocery store for more fresh fruits & veggies – not sure what to juice for her? I know you’ve said some wonderful things about cantelope so I’ll be getting 1 or 2 of those & also be looking at your juice recipes. I have all your ebooks & I’m pretty sure there as well.
    Thank you!

  7. Nikki says:

Wow! Lots of great juice recipes right here! I’ve got quite the grocery list now. I’m going to make these juices for the whole family & hopefully they will all be feeling great! If my 2 younger children happen to get whatever my oldest has now, these juices should give them a headstart on fighting it.

    Thanks!

  8. Justyna says:

    Hi Tom,

I would really appreciate some help in what fast I should do for a hernia or if it’s not appropriate for it.
I’m just waiting for the results of the ultrasound and the diagnosis, but I they mentioned that I might have a small hernia. You can’t see it or feel it and it was pretty hard to detect.
I went to get it checked out because I now sing at least once a week and every time I sang for the past month now, I have a dull pain in the right side of my abdomen, around the inguinal canal. It only occurs when I sing.
I do believe in fasting and have done water fasting for 7 days once before, and it helped me to feel better and to gain stability emotionally.
I don’t want to have surgery if it is in fact a hernia because I believe that it only gets rid of the symptom, not the cause (I may be wrong).

Do you have any tips for me? I would really, really appreciate any imput, and thoughts about it… since I’m a bit down, because on medical sites there’s only one way of treating hernias: small operation.

    Thanks so much,

    Justyna

  9. Tom Coghill says:

    Hi Justyan,
Fasting can reduce the pain or a hernia but it will not heal it. I would get the operation and fast a few days before and through the operation to speed healing and reduce pain. I fasted through the recovery of 2 major accidents that demanded surgery. To me, a juice fast is the only preparation for surgery. 3 to 10 days of juice fasting before surgery and 20 afterward.

  10. seandepue says:

    Hi Tom,

I am trying fasting as a last resort.
I have been to over 2 dozen docs, clinics, etc over 20 yrs.
    No help.
I wake up more tired then i went to sleep. have very poor memory along with brain fog.
I am extemely allergic to all underarm deodorants and can’t tolerate cigarette, caffeine like i did before becoming sick.

2 yrs ago a raw veggie diet for 2 weeks along with chaparral tea was making me feel better! then I started chelating for heavy metal and went back to normal.

I have no diagnosis and am thinking maybe gut issues and yeast might be affecting me…but i have no idea.

I am on day 6 of fast and having a tough time.

Do you think a fast could help with my symptoms?

thank you for your time – Sean

    • Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Sean,
Are you juice or water fasting? Yes juice fasting can transform your life and give total and permanent health but you would need 30 days.
Juice fasting has to be modified for yeast infections. I did a quick search for male yeast infections. But found nothing of value.
      ———————————
Most men will go through life never knowing that they have a candida or fungal infection because it is extremely difficult to detect. Male and yeast infection in boys most common causes are antibiotics, alcohol, beer, sex, wheat products, corn products, peanuts, barley, and a weakened immune system. Other than the antibiotics, the rest contribute to candida overgrowth by weakening the immune system by killing good bacteria from the over acidity they produce in the intestine. These common food products are universally contaminated with molds.

  11. seandepue says:

Hi Tom – thanks for your response. I am on my 7th day.
I started on green veggie juice for 4 days, but got so nauseous I switched to water with half a lemon squeezed in it.for the last two days.
I almost threw up last night – I was extremely nauseous so I ate a celery stick and felt better.
I have no idea what this extreme reaction is – I don’t read about others reacting this way and it puzzles and kind of scares me. I’m tough with myself when it comes to health cures, but this is getting to be too much.
I think switching to fruit juices, carrot, beet juice would be much more tollerable but will not be good for getting rid of candida.

I know yeast overgrowth is basically diagnosed by symptoms. I have some of those but not all.
I spoke to a candida doc 2 yrs ago who said my symptoms could be caused by candida – but all specialists want to tell you their cure can help what you’ve got – know what I mean?
The thing is I am desperate to get well and I have tried everything else.

Have you counseled anyone that has had extreme nausea for the first 7 days on fast? and did it subside?

  12. lynn2010 says:

I have been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian disease, will a long water fast heal it.

  13. shaun says:

    Hi Tom,

Not sure where to leave this post….
I did a 40 day fast with support from you last year and it was great! I have fasted before, many times, but not for so long.

This year, I have not done a fast as I have had a medical condition in which I have had to take meds (much to my dismay). I really want to do a fast as the medical intervention isn’t working…but I don’t know if I can get completely off the meds. I have cut them down as much as I can. What can you tell me about fasting on a small dose of meds or should I forget it? I thought I could start that way and then wean off them. Not sure what to do as fasting has been my way of keeping myself healthy for years.
    Suggestions?

  14. shaun says:

    Hi Tom,
I have been having tremors that have an unknown origin. The meds seem to keep a “cap” on them – don’t make them go away, but lessen the severity. I am trying to go completely off of them – we will see. They are a mild tranquilizer – I don’t feel tired on them but they are something I would ordinarily never entertain taking.

I can fast on them? It would seem that a med would be toxic in a fasting situation. It would be a juice fast.

Hi all, I am SO happy to have found this website!! I am starting a (at least) 30 day-white grape juice fast for healing in the morning and am so relieved I don’t have to do it alone.

This set-up is a little confusing to me, can someone help me figure out where the appropriate place would be to post updates or progress reports on my fast? Thanks!

PS I love this place already! Where else can you go to find people HEALING themselves of cancers and diseases?! Awesome! And I give God all the glory for my journey, because after much prayer and experimentation w/ food, I have ended up here and I KNOW that I will find healing!

    • Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Tiffany,
Great to have you with us. Bottle grape juice is hard to fast on as it is so acid. Fresh grape juice from and extractor is amazing. Look for the sun at the top center of this page and you will see the link for progress reports. You can make it your self or email me. We are making it easier in the future.

  16. georgiaboy says:

    Tom,
I am very intrigued by the subject of juice fasting. I am 54 and thought I was in relatively good health. I am type II diabetic taking 1000 mg metformin twice daily. 20mg Lipitor, and 20 mg Lisinopril. It seems they all go together. I started eating vegetarian the first of June. About a month later I had a massive gall bladder attack. From that I went to a Iridologist who said I had a sluggish liver. She started me on a liver detox. From that I started having kidney pain and my blood pressure went up. I have been juice fasting 5 days a week for the last three weeks. Since I started juicing my blood sugars have come down to high 90’s fasting. My total cholesterol is 132. The lowest it’s ever been. However my blood pressure doesn’t seem to come down. I am ready to come off the metformin and Lipitor but not sure about lisinopril. I recently found out that Lipitor side effects include all of the problems I am having. I would like to get off all medicines and go on an extended fast. I have lost 25 pounds in 4 months and cholesterol and blood sugars are normal or lower. I feel that the Lipitor may have cause kidney damage as I am having a lot of bubbles in my urine. What can you advise?

    • georgiaboy says:

To add more info, after doing more research I am convinced that the statin drug Lipitor is the culprit for all my symptoms. I have never been told about the coq10 deficiency it causes and the harmful effects of that. I started having liver and kidney problems and saw my blood pressure spike around the same time. I am off the Lipitor now but want to know if the damage caused by the deficiency can be restored? I believe my liver problems are a result of it and my I have been having bubbles in my urine which could be protein. I had a regular check up in June and all my liver, kidney function numbers were normal. These symptoms started in July so this has been going on for the last 4 months. Can this damage be reversed through fasting? Thanks for your help

      • georgiaboy says:

As I stated in the first post I have been on a vegetarian diet since the first of June. A liver cleanse has been going on for a couple of months and for the last three weeks have been doing juice fast mon-fri and eating a couple of normal vegetarian meals on the weekends. What can you tell me?

  17. Ron says:

Hi georgiaboy, Tom is on a Medical Mission in New Guinea (see front page) and doesn’t have the internet readily available. I will try to help you.

Kidney damage can be repaired through fasting. I’ve heard of worse cases than yours turning out good! You need to go slow. Fasting is rough on the kidney’s as they are the main cleaners of toxins in the body. Tom would suggest a lot of juice which will slow the toxin release. Avocado is good for kidney pain.

You will need to juice fast 28 days or longer for them to heal properly. If you find yourself in too much pain, break using “raw foods only” for a few days. Then resume fasting. Your blood pressure will come down naturally after a few weeks. You should consult your doctor before discontinuing your BP meds. Taking the absolute minimum required won’t hurt your fast. Of course no meds is preferred, but not in any life threatening situations. Doctors usually frown on fasting. You may want to consult a licensed holistic healing center, or physician in your area. Some can do certain tests and determine if you are able to drop your meds, and the extent of your kidney damage. Also, they can give you valuable guidance and information. A few are now covered under health plans! Health providers are seeing the light…by-way-of a cheaper, healthier alternative to surgery!

Try to use mostly veggie juice with fruit added for flavor. Leafy green, and bright colored raw foods like beets, carrots, peppers of all kinds and melons are very healing. Herbal tea like milk thistle is a great liver and kidney detox tool also. Searches on the net will give you recipe ideas for kidney repair juicing.

Remember to go slow. There is no need to rush. Your body will respond, it just needs the tools. Stay away from proteins (dairy, meats, whey, soy, etc.), sugar, alcohol and processed foods. They turn acid in the body, and just block and slow the detox / fasting process. Stay positive! You are on the right course. Ron

    • georgiaboy says:

Ron, thanks for your reply. I have a couple of questions to add. What is the biggest difference between juicing with a juicer and juicing with a blender like a blend tec or a vitamix? I know the blender has pulp in it but does it affect your bodies ability to detox or does it just slow it down? Also have you dealt with the statin drug problems and the coq10 deficiencies they cause and the damage it has to your liver and kidneys and how treatable that is with a juice fast? Thanks for your time,
      Tom

  18. Ron says:

Hi Tom, A blender allows more pulp and fiber, which require digesting. When the body is digesting, it’s not catabolizing. The process that cleans the body. In your case, it might not be a bad thing to use. But, I’m thinking: when will your body get a chance using fiber and pulp based juices? Clear is best as far as juicing goes.

As far as the statins go? I wouldn’t take them if my cholesterol was 600! As you probably know they deplete the vital enzyeme CoQ 10. The good news is, unless you are on your deathbed you can repair most any damage to your body with: juice fasting, moderate exercise and supplements. I’ve seen it, heard it and read it with my own eyes and ears!! Call it miracles, mind power, sheer will….. or whatever you like. Negativity and non-believers need not apply!!

Also, I lowered my cholesterol from 241 to 214 with my first extended fast of 30+ days!. I am now at about 170 and have stayed there for, approaching 3 years…..through fasting, exercise and diet. And I have my own story of decade long medicated ailments that were cured. But, that isn’t the most important thing that fasting has done for me. Only veteran, extended fasters would understand. There is a [dimension beyond] once we get over the ignorant social stigma of, “food denial”. To use a famous quote: “Man does NOT live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” And if we put down our forks and spoons long enough…sometimes we hear Him.

Sorry, I get carried away sometimes! I’m down off my soapbox! LOL

Here is an interesting article and more info on statins and CoQ 10. http://www.spacedoc.com/statins_CoQ10.htm

    • georgiaboy says:

Thanks Ron, More questions. I now understand the difference between juicing and blending. So when you do a true juice fast how much juice should you drink a day. Also I understand they lose their nutrients quicker so is it acceptable to juice the night before and take it to work. I do not work in an environment where I could juice at work. Also is it necessary or at least helpful to supplement enzymes when you are juicing and if so, what and how much.

      thanks again,
      Tom

  19. Ron says:

Hi Tom, Juicing the night before is fine. Optimum time to use it is before 8-10 hours. But, you will still get approximately 50-60% of those nutrients. Just use it fresh when you can. Drink as much as you “need”. You will find a balance after a few days. Use some water, herbal teas and dry fasting(nothing) on longer fasts to mix it up. Be creative, imaginative and enjoy. You won’t do anything healthier for your body, besides exercise!

Any supplements or vitamins are fine. Just be sure to use very soluble products. You can check that by dropping one in a glass of room temperature water. If it dissolves in less than 20 minutes, you’re good. If not, pitch it. Keep the dose’s small. You may up end-up with a tummy ache, or worse(several visits to the john)! Also, try one at a time in case of a reaction you’ll know what it was. After you’ve tested everything, you can try combining.

Personally, I won’t use many supplements unless I have a known deficiency. You’ll get most everything you need from a balanced diet. Vitamins: “K”, “D”, “omegas” and “amino” are the most elusive in a good diet. Ron

  20. georgiaboy says:

Ron, The obvious deficiency is the coq10 from taking lipitor. I am taking 200mg of that a day. But I was referring to digestive and systemic enzymes that some promote to speed up cell metabolism and the healing process. I’m narrowing it down now and just about ready to do a short 5 day fast to test the water and then dive in to try to heal my kidney and liver from the statin damage. Thanks for your input and very timely responses.

    Tom

  21. Ron says:

No problem Tom, we’re here to help.

Digestive and systemic enzymes are not necessary while fasting. They are for processing foods efficiently. Take them when you are eating. Or, if it will make you feel better.

My advice is not to over think this. When juice fasting, the body has everything it needs to repair itself. Cardio and weight bearing exercise is also “very important” for; [speeding] the release of healing chemical processes and rebuilding damaged cells. Ron

p.s. …another benefit is salt water flush (swf) and enemas. Toxin release is a big help in making us feel better, faster!

  22. georgiaboy says:

Okay Ron, I’m with you. I just got a call from my doctor today concerning the blood work I had done yesterday. He told me my liver enzymes were elevated. There are many causes but one of the first I looked at is statin drugs. This seems to be a common problem that mainstream doctors are not fully willing to admit. I am to have more blood work done in 6 weeks. I will go forward with the juice fast and just see where I am at that time. I cannot see letting him throw more medication at me so I will have to hunker down to try to see results by then. Thanks for all your input.

    Tom

  23. Ron says:

Tom, Keep in mind that a 6 day fast is just a start. You will not get much of a detoxing. Just enough to irritate you! You are getting a good start, and intro to fasting. But, for any “real” results you will need a 10-20 day fast. For healing 28 days or more! Possibly several long fasts consecutively.

I don’t want to discourage you. I want you to be informed about fasting. If short fasts are all that you are able to do, try to keep a raw diet. That alone can be very, very healing and detoxing! Ron

  24. georgiaboy says:

Ron, I do understand the long fast. My intention is to do a shorter one to acclimate myself to it and then I will embark on a longer one. I am gathering info and also bought a new juicer. I was blending up until now but I understand the difference and know I need to juice to effect a healing process. I have been eating raw for almost a month now and have been vegetarian for 5 months so I have a good head start to a healthier lifestyle. There are many smaller things that I would like to see results for but my liver and kidneys are my main focus right now. I still have a lot to learn but I am willing to listen. That’s why I asked about systemic enzymes, I was wondering if they speed up the healing process if used with a juice fast. Also if the nutrients in the juice are sufficient or will it cause any deficiencies. One thing at a time I know. I didn’t get here overnight and I won’t reverse anything overnight. Thanks for your input. I appreciate the correspondence and the advice.

I have beat so many horrible illnesses from lyme disease to mold poisoning, this cant be it for me. and i beat all of them naturally! Please do you think a juice fast could possibly heal the vagus nerve? this honestly is my last hope ive tried everything else.

      Hi rmwagoner
You have an infection. A juice fast will help. Do 30 days and the nerves may recover substantially. Kill the infection and the pain will end. My belief. Just for a test, take 2 Flucloxicillin spelling is is bad. it may work it is my most commonly used antibiotic with excellent range. During the fast take ginger, garlic, and cayanne.

I cant take any abx i have a severe reaction to all the abx. They have told me this isnt an infection but nerve damage from the viral infection. I think the sore throats are from the lpr a form of gerd caused from the nerve damage that allows the acid to come up. i take pharm grade garlic and gse and other good stuff that would cover me for infections i also get in an iFARed sauna everyday. So it is possible for juicing to heal nerves even the vagal nerve? thank you for ur time 🙂

    Tom,

I am on Day 5 of a juice fast. Is it normal to be coughing up large amounts of clear mucus? I feel great, have a lot of energy, but I am almost coughing like I am sick in order to get all of this mucus up.

    Thanks,

    Josh

Hello, I just started a water fast and wondered if still taking a medication during would deter it? Adderall 10 mg a day

    • Tom Coghill says:

      Hi Toni,
Adderall is a powerful stimulant and highly addictive. You can damage your body taking stimulants and water fasting. You need to quit the drug and the best way is through a long juice fast. Quitting adderall is a nightmare from past experience with retreat clients addicted to this drug.

Thank you for the info. I’ve only been taking the medication for a week now, so it will be easy to stop. Should I wait any period of time to restart the fast?

    Hi Tom,

Don’t know where in this site to post a comment for you. Hi again, I started longer fasts about 5 years ago with the support of you and this website and I am a fan! I do at least 2 long ones a year and have cleared several medical issues with the use of fasting….in addition to getting much more centered. I am on day 7 of a 40 day fast again. I was just in the Philippines and tried to look up your center without much luck….anyway thanks for all you do!

A question I have now is about detoxing. I have had urine tests each summer which show I have high levels of lead in my system. This is due to the fact I have worked overseas in polluted environments. I have tried using a chelator (from my natureopath) and selenium during my fasts (5 days on 10 off) but now I seem to have developed a reaction to it (I get these herpe type sores). What is your experience with getting rid of heavy metals?

    Shaun

  34. Ron says:

Hi Shaun, I’ll try to address your question. It seems there is no definitive way to rid our bodies of heavy metals. But, we know that our organs collect most toxins in our bodies. Also any inflammed areas of our bodies are like magnets for toxins. Fasting is good for the removal of toxins…but good natural herbs and select foods are better as a vehicle for the heavy metals. Cilantro or Corriandar is one herb that is linked to heavy metals removal in the body.

I would also suggest foods that stimulate the liver, kidney’s and other organs. Such as: Milkthisle herbs in tea, for the liver. Olive oil and lemon are very good for the gallbladder. Hydrangea root, and Marsh mellow root, as well as black cherry extract are great for the kidneys!

Other than that, prevention of further contamination is the best thing you can do. As far as the sores. I didn’t see anything in my research mentioning sores as a symptom. That could be a virus or allergic reation to the chelator meds. Nowhere did I see that using chelators were recommended. It is highly speculative that they work at all. And should only be used in extreme toxic cases where nothing else is working. Only a doctor in the field would know for sure if this would pertain to your case.

I hope this has helped you to some degree. Hopefully Tom will chime in at some point with more info for you. Ron

Hey all.. Great website. I am looking do a water fast. I have been diagnosed with Budd Chiari syndrome, which turns out is a fancy name for a blood clot blocking the portal vein from my liver. They are wanting to install a shunt to reroute the blood, which doesn’t look like anything more than a band aid until a liver transplant, which are hard to get and very expensive. My question is will a water fast dissolve this blood clot and how long would something like that take? I am guessing it will, but will take an extended fast of 3 to 4 weeks. Any input is appreciated. Thanks Craig
