  • Hilary 29 years old female, weighing 63 kg / 138.6 lbs, 72 in /182.88 cm tall, From Cincinnati, United States US

  • Doing 30 days of Juice Fasting. Starting June 23, 2011

  • Reasons for Fasting:
I want to cure my lichen planus and steroid acne. I also tend to binge on sugar and refined carbs occasionally so I would like to break that habit.

  • Past Fasting Experience:
I have done 24 hour water fasts in the past. I've also done raw till supper for awhile.

  • Present Diet:
Before starting the fast I was mostly raw with a cooked dinner. I tried to be as healthy as possible. The week before the fast I had actually slipped up out of frustration/depression that I wasn't getting better. So I was drinking a cup of coffee a day and not eating as healthy as I should. I've been a vegetarian for about two months now.

  • Supplements:
I took a range of vitamin supplements before the fast, but I'm not supplementing anything during the fast.

  • Present Medication or Drug Usage:
I'm taking 100mg of docycyline twice a day. I have two more weeks left of the prescription so I'm going to finish it. I've been on it for six weeks, though, with little improvement to my face.

  • State of Mind:
Optimistic. I feel happier than I have in awhile. I feel hopeful that this may actually heal me. I feel as though I've tried everything else so this HAS to work.

  • Limitations:
I am a stay at home mom with two young children. Though I don't feel like I have any limitations. That is actually a help because I can make juice whenever I need it and rest when I need to.

  • Questions:
I posted this in another post before I saw how to make a progress report, but so far this hasn't been too difficult. The first day was rough but after that I have felt fine. I enjoy moments of pure happiness and the rest of the time I feel balanced and good. Is it normal not to have many symptoms of detoxification? My tongue has been coated and other than a feeling a little light headed here and there I haven't had any symptoms. Hunger pains are not even that bad and I have to deal with food for the three meals a day I make my family.

Just started day seven. Yesterday was interesting. I started the day feeling kind of weak and a bit light headed. I had juice three times, the last being around 2 o’clock in the afternoon. By 7 o’clock I started to get more energy. I was feeling great by the time I put my kids to bed at 8:30 and ended up jumping on the elliptical for 20+ minutes. I took it easy, but that’s something I wouldn’t have been able to do at the beginning of the day. Then I did some light yoga. I felt great!
The only down side is that I didn’t sleep well last night. Just couldn’t seem to fall asleep. I had trouble meditating before bed, also. My mind was racing and i just felt so energized.
This morning I feel great again. I hope this lasts all day! My face looks like it might, might, be starting to clear finally. We’ll see how it looks in a couple of days.

I’m on day 16 of my 30 day juice fast. I had a somewhat rough week last week. Kind of cranky, missing food, the taste of it anyways. Hunger pangs haven’t been that bad, it’s all mental.
Around day 11 I started to notice that my steroid acne was slightly better. It has slowly but steadily been improving everyday since. I am very optimistic that by the end of my fast it will be cleared completely. Seeing the improvement is a big motivator that this is all worth it.
My lichen planus is not improved, in fact it is actually spreading a bit. I know it will eventually run it’s course, especially if I continue to eat well after the fast, so I’m not too troubled by that.
As far as weight I’m only down 11 pounds. I’ve lost inches all over, but all of my clothes still fit. I’m bummed that I’m not down a pant size. Maybe by the end I will be. My stomach however is completely flat and from the waist up I can’t imagine there is anymore weight to lose. I hope I don’t sound like I’m complaining about the pant size too much, I have never weighed this little in my adult life, so I’m pleased with that.
In the end, though, I just want my face back. I’m tired of being embarrassed to go out in public.
During a cranky spell a few days ago I realized I was cranky because I was sad that I wasn’t able to eat the yummy food I had made for my family. I reminded myself that food isn’t what makes you happy and that snapped me out of it. I do have a running list of yummy healthy foods to make when I’m eating again. :) Almond butter, and drizzled honey on a rolled up leaf of Romain has never sounded so good!
I’ve made a real effort this week to keep myself busy. That makes the days go faster, in the beginning it felt like they were dragging by. With a small home run business, and two small kids, I’m not short on things that need to be done!
So hooray to me for making it halfway! It’s all downhill from here, and I don’t doubt for a second I will cross the finish line, healthier, happier, and looking better!!
Oh, I almost forgot, on day 12 I had sharp stabbing pains in my big toe. The same big toe and in the same spot that I had a pretty bad injury last year. The pain was quite intense at some points. I was so excited because I have read that during an extended fast your body revisits old injuries to clean them up. I’m assuming that was what was going on. Interesting.
I also have noticeable soreness in my quads and the side of my neck. Toxins perhaps? When I stretch they feel much better. I just got some yoga dvds today and I’m looking forward to starting those.
Okay, I’m done now. I will update in a week or so.

Day 22 of my 30 day juice fast. Feeling pretty good. Some days I have more energy than others. My face is looking much better, I would say 75% improved. I’m looking forward to seeing how much more it improves over this last week. The lichen planus hasn’t changed much. It seemed to actually get a little worse for a week or so, but now it is staying the same.
I’ve lost about 15 pounds. I weighed 123 this morning. Though, I usually seem to weigh two pounds more at night than I do in the morning. Still wearing the same size pants which is mind boggling to me.
My hair has been much drier than normal, like my scalp is not producing as much oil as normal, I hope that goes back to normal after the fast. My skin is not as oily either. For a week or so it seemed twice as oily as normal. My mouth didn’t have that yuck taste very much at all today, that’s a welcome development. :)
I am looking forward to next weekend when I can eat again! The hunger “pains” may not be around but I still think about food all the time. I’m confident I will be eating healthy foods, though. I like my new shape and don’t want to loose it!
I have mood swings of cranky to happy, I’m looking forward to that balancing out. Also, I have been dealing with insomnia this past week which I will be happy to be rid of.

30 day fast completed! Last night was the final night of my fast. This morning I woke up early and enjoyed a delicious fuji apple sprinkled with cinnamon. It was delicious, and it filled me up, one apple! I didn’t have to run to the bathroom either as it seems most people need to.
I did all my stats and am quite impressed. My weight is at 118.6 down from 138. I interested to see where it stabilizes after this first week of clean eating. Lost 3.75 inches on my waist, 2.5″ off hips, 2.5″ and 3 ” off thighs.
I feel fantastic. I’m excited to feel as good as I do only with more energy. I think I probably didn’t drink as much juice as others who claim to have boundless energy during a fat do. I just didn’t have the appetite for lots of juice while fasting. I’m going to continue to juice this week several times a day and then at least every morning from here on out.
I am so happy that the cravings I was having during most of the fast for pasta, cookies, cupcakes, and bread are non existent. They disappeared about a week ago. Now I can’t stop thinking about fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds. Can’t wait to have some almond butter tomorrow or Monday!
One thing I have been dealing with, especially this last week, is trouble falling asleep. I would be awake until 2:30- 3:00 in the morning. Then wake up at 7:30 or 8:00. Amazingly I always felt awake and not sleepy, but laying in bed till the early a.m. sucks. So I’m hoping that now that I’m eating again I will have an easier time falling asleep. I’d much rather fall asleep easily and wake up early.
My face I am excited to report, is 95% clear. I have no doubt it will be completely clear in the next week or two. Any remaining spots are mainly discoloration from healed/healing bumps. My Lichen Planus, unfortunately, is no better, in fact it is worse. It is aggravated by the extreme heat we are having as it only really bothers me when I am hot and sweaty. I’m confident with continued clean eating it will improve, though.
I never had any issues with mucous during the fast. I didn’t smell too great for the first three weeks. :) But this last week I haven’t been so offensive. Plus my tongue cleared and my mouth didn’t have such a bad taste anymore. My mouth was dry this last week and I wonder if that was due to not producing as much saliva since I wasn’t eating. I brushed and flossed my teeth a minimum of twice a day and will continue to do so.

Oh, by the way, last night I stumbled upon and watched a documentary titled, “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.” It was about two men juice fasting for health. I thought it was kind of ironic I found it right as I was ending the fast. It was quite good and recommend it to anyone interested in fasting.

Hi Wiez, Hold off on the nuts and seeds for a few days, when your digestive system is back in full swing. Otherwise they may go undigested and irritate the bowels and colon. Also, introduce Probiotics, as in live cultured yogurt.

Great job! Now you have to make fasting a lifestyle! I fast one day per week, one week per month and a 30-40 day fast once per year! It’s a great maintenance. And keeps you in tip top condition. Happy fasting! Ron

  7. Wiez says:

    Hi Ron,
Unfortunately I read your post after eating some raw pecans and raw sunflower seeds. They actually didn’t bother me at all. I got excited about feeling so good and made some spelt biscuits and thinking it was a fluke (the bloating that followed) made some sugar and dairy free spelt and millet peach muffins the next day. Whoops. I’ve been bloated the last two nights. So back to all raw fruits and veggies for the next few days, no bread!! It sucks that I haven’t eaten a single processed anything and still feel bloated. But it makes sense that my digestive system isn’t up to speed yet. I’ve been having two to three bowel movements each morning the last two days and I can tell there is more that needs to be moved out. I don’t want to consume any dairy so I’ve been taking a probiotic capsule twice a day for the last two days and will continue to do so for the next two weeks.
Today I started with a bowl of strawberries, banana, and peach. Then I juiced carrots and a cucumber. For lunch I had a salad made from cilantro, jicama, red pepper, corn, and onion (all raw.) I followed that up with almond milk, raw honey, and raw cacao. I’m drinking peppermint and chamomile tea now. The bloat that lingered on from last night is feeling slightly better but I am mourning the loss of my impossibly flat stomach!!!
I’ll will definitely continue to juice fast periodically. I may even juice for a few days next week. I don’t want to do another long fast for awhile. Maybe a 7-10 day fast around the holidays and then week long fasts three or so times a year from there on out. One day a week fasting will be no problem, and that I may start next week.
I do have a question. During my fast I was very diligent about oral hygiene. I flossed and brushed a minimum of twice a day, often three times a day. My teeth and gums looked and felt great. But since I have ended the fast my gums have become very irritated and red. Brushing is very painful. What could be causing this? Is it all the acids from the fruit I am eating? It was bothering me so bad this morning a tried oil pulling out of desperation and that helped a bit. I will continue to do that three times a day. Any suggestions or ideas for what is causing it and what I can do about it? Thanks!
Oh, and when do you think I can introduce cooked foods? I want to stick to mainly raw, but I would like to have some cooked veggies with rice here and there for dinner. When should I try to introduce those into my diet?

I’m thinking you are irritating the gums. If you are on a mostly raw diet, an apple will clean your teeth!!

During a fast I brush twice a day, and floss every 3 or 4 days. When you are not putting junk in your body, you just don’t need to clean that often. Try rinsing your mouth w/ some sea salt a few times a day to get them pink again. Aloe vera juice is excellent for the gums too! It will completely heal them! Guaranteed!
