Chlorella Cancer Treatment

Other Names: Bulgarian Chlorella, Bulgarian Green Algae, Chinese Chlorella, Chlorella Algae, Chlorella Vulgaris, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Clorela, Freshwater Green Algae, Freshwater Seaweed, Green Alga, Green Algae, Japanese Chlorella, Seaweed, Yaeyama Chlorella.

Chollera can assist in a holistic cancer treatment. Chollera will not cure cancer alone but in combination with other herbs, juices and therapies, chollera will boost cancer treatment effectiveness.

Over 30,000 species of algae inhabit the earth, from microscopic blue green algae to giant kelp strands over 120 feet long. Microalgae include blue-green algae such as spirulina and aphanizomenon and green algae such as chrorella and dunaliella. Such algae are found always near a source of fresh water and represent the very first life forms on the earth, some 3.6 billion years ago.

Although there has been interest in algae as a food source for over a hundred years, only after the Second World War did this intensify as the Japanese, in particular, looked for ways to feed the nation. Algae can be produced on relatively barren land and at protein levels twenty times higher than soya beans.

Most algae have a structure like a virus, being very primitive with no nucleus, but what differentiates Chlorella is that it does have a nucleus which gives it so many of its “extra properties” and in recent years this form has amplified the interest in algae and their benefits.

Thus, Chlorella is a unique, single celled, fresh water algae. It is often dubbed, a “pure food” or a “whole food” because it contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes and polysaccharides. Indeed almost everything you could want in a natural supplement!

Chlorella is a type of algae that grows in fresh water. The whole plant is used to make nutritional supplements and medicine. Chlorella is a good source of protein, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals. The cell wall of chlorella must be broken down before people can digest it.

Most of the chlorella that is available in the U.S. is grown in Japan or Taiwan. It is processed and made into tablets and liquid extracts. These extracts contain “chlorella growth factor,” which is described as a water-soluble extract of chlorella containing chemicals including amino acids, peptides, proteins, vitamins, sugars, and nucleic acids.

Be aware that chlorella products can vary significantly depending on the way “the crop” used to make them was cultivated, harvested, and processed. Investigators have found that dried preparation of chlorella can contain from 7% to 88% protein, 6% to 38% carbohydrate, and 7% to 75% fat.

As a medicine, chlorella is used for preventing cancer, reducing radiation treatment side effects, stimulating the immune system, improving response to flu vaccine, increasing white blood cell counts (especially in people with HIV infection or cancer), preventing colds, protecting the body against toxic metals such as lead and mercury, and slowing the aging process.

Chlorella is also used to increase “good” bacteria in the intestine in order to improve digestion; and to help treat ulcers, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and diverticulosis.

Some people also use chlorella for the prevention of stress-related ulcers; treatment of constipation, bad breath, and hypertension; as an antioxidant; to reduce cholesterol; to increase energy; to detoxify the body; and as a source of magnesium to promote mental health, relieve premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and reduce asthma attacks. It is also used for fibromyalgia.

Chlorella is applied to the skin for treating skin ulcers, rashes caused by radiation treatment, and a sexually transmitted disease called trichomoniasis.

Chlorella and Fighting Cancer

Since chlorella is proven to increase the white cell content of the body, it can prove an important aid both during and after chemotherapy.

Its benefits increase significantly where the body has a healthy natural flora balance in the gut. Chlorella stimulates the growth of certain beneficial bacteria and its benefits are in turn enhanced by beneficial bacteria. Taking chlorella and a good quality multi-strain probiotic has a particularly powerful synergistic effect.

Clinical trials show that chlorella and beneficial bacteria, properly stimulated, will chelate heavy metals, nitrosamines and oestrogenic products helping their elimination from the body. Correct levels of beneficial bacteria will also aid production of cancer fighting vitamins such as B-12 , biotin, folic acid and vitamin K from the ‘greens’.

Again, there are clinical trials on this. (NB. The combination of chlorella and beneficial bacteria may cause some ´wind problems´ for the first three or four days. This is actually a sign that your flora are correctly re-balancing.)

So chlorella is, quite simply, an excellent way of delivering important vitamins such as B-12 into your blood stream. This is very important in the cancer fight as estimates suggest 50 per cent of cancers are associated with poor diet. For example, women with breast cancer have been shown to have a deficiency of vitamin B-12. This is exacerbated if they then decide to ´Go vegetarian´ as part of their treatment programme. 70 per cent of Vegetarians are deficient in B-12 as it chiefly occurs in meat. Chlorella (and probiotic strains) can help significantly. Vitamin K has been shown to stop liver cancer in research studies in Tokyo and Washington. And you can only get your vitamin K naturally from green foods and the action of beneficial bacteria on them causing its release.

Following a paper by Waladkhani and Clemens in 1990 (Effects of dietary phytochemicals on cancer development) there has been increasing interest in the benefits of chlorophyll in general in the cancer fighting process. Algae, chlorophyll, chlorella and other such elements have all been tested as agents for use with photodynamic therapy, largely by the Russians. In the presence of light, chlorophyll produces oxygen – the very substance that cancer cells hate.

The chlorophyll molecule is structurally very similar to the haemoglobin molecule, but whereas haemoglobin has iron at its centre, chlorophyll has magnesium. When light shines on chlorophyll it emits oxygen, the basic system of photosynthesis. These facts mean that firstly chlorophyll is relatively free to travel round the blood system non-toxically because of its resemblance to haemoglobin; and secondly, in the presence of light, it produces oxygen – the very substance that cancer cells hate. The ´sun belt´ across America has been shown to be a region of less cancer. The population consume higher levels of ´Greens´ and the sunshine gives them higher levels of vitamin D. Moreover, in a land where 40 per cent of the population has magnesium deficiencies, the people of the sun belt do not. And magnesium is linked to correct mineral levels inside the cell and its power stations, the mitochondria. Incorrect mineral levels (e.g, too high a sodium level, too low in potassium) is linked to cancer.

Certainly, there is a lot of well documented evidence from the Far East on the benefits of eating green vegetables for diseases such as colon cancer, or for increasing levels of phytoestrogens, and their protection against hormonally induced cancers like the oestrogen-driven breast, ovarian, prostate, womb and brain cancers.

Chlorella fights cancer by boosting the immune system.

Cancer cells develop in everyone’s body. People who have never been diagnosed with cancer have hundreds or thousands of cancerous cells in their bodies on a daily basis. It is the job of the immune system to make sure these dangerous cells are found and destroyed before they can develop into full blown cancers. When a person is diagnosed as having cancer, it means that something has gone seriously wrong with their immune system. Many health gurus have declared that cancer is a result of immune system failure.

This means that one of the best ways to prevent cancer is to strengthen the immune system. For people who have had cancer and want to prevent recurrence, this is critical. The need for a strong immune system to destroy cancerous cells is why health advocates are so strongly against chemotherapy, which destroys the body’s immune system and leaves the person wide open for more cancer.

Chlorella stimulates the immune system and the production of interferon, one of the body’s greatest natural defenses against cancer. Increased production of interferon stimulates macrophages, T-cells and tumor necrosis factor, the battery of armed soldiers the body uses to fight off cancer. When the immune system is strengthened, the body becomes again able to fight off cancer as well as defend itself against viruses, bacteria, chemicals, and foreign proteins.

Carotenoids from chlorella make cancer cells die.

Scientists in South Korea recently found that carotenoids from chlorella may be effectively used to prevent cancer in humans. They discovered the primary carotenoid from C. Ellipsoidea is violaxanthin, while the major carotenoid from C. Vulgaris is lutein. They examined the activity of semi-purified extracts of these carotenoids against human cancer and found they inhibited cancer cell growth in a dose-dependent manner.

When both were used together, appropriate programmed cell death, known as apoptosis, was enhanced. The reason cancer cells are so problematic is that they refuse to die on cue. Chlorella made sure they followed through when it was their time to die. The researchers also discovered that C. ellipsoidea extract was 2.5 times more effective than C. vulgaris at inducing the apoptotic effect. (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, November 26, 2008).

Chlorella has a distinguished history as a cancer fighter.

Although Western medicine has generally ignored chlorella, scientists in the East have widely researched and documented its cancer fighting abilities. One such study involved mice given chlorella prior to being transplanted with breast tumors. The results indicated a 70 percent survival rate in the chlorella fed group, and a control group survival rate of zero.

In another study, fifteen patients with extremely deadly glioblastoma were treated with high levels of chlorella, in some cases combined with chemotherapy and radiation. There was an immediate increase in their health and immune status, and they experienced a 40 percent two-year survival rate, compared to the normal two year survival rate of 10 percent for this type of cancer.

Chlorella A Key Detoxification Tool

In Japan, interest in chlorella has focused largely on its detoxifying properties – its ability to remove or neutralize poisonous substances from the body. This detoxification of heavy metals and other chemical toxins in the blood will take 3 to 6 months to build up enough to begin this process depending on how much chlorella a person is taking.

The tough outer fiber rich cell wall of chlorella binds with toxins, pesticides, and heavy metals making chlorella an excellent choice for detoxification. It is useful in the breakdown of persistent hydrocarbon and metallic toxins such as DDT, PCBs, mercury, cadmium, and lead. These toxins remain in the environment for long periods of time and degrade very slowly. Many actually become more toxic as they degrade, such as PCBs’ formation of dioxins.

These fat soluble toxins have accumulated in the food chain and permeated the food supply. Virtually all Americans have been shown to have excessive amounts of these chemicals stored in their body fat. Anyone who is trying to lose weight should be aware that environmental toxins are released from fat storage and dumped into the blood stream as fats cells are broken down. They need to be cleared from the body by a natural detoxification system such as that offered by chlorella. Such toxins are also harmful to thyroid function and one of the reasons so many Americans suffer from thyroid insufficiency. When the body is detoxified, many people find their thyroid condition improves.

One of the reasons new mothers are given for why they should not breast feed is the accumulation of dangerous levels of dioxin in breast milk. Scientists in Japan analyzed dioxin levels in breast milk and maternal blood samples from 35 pregnant women. They measured immunoglogulin A (IgA) concentrations in the milk and investigated correlations with dioxin concentrations. In addition, 18 of the 25 women took chlorella supplements during their pregnancies.

The scientists found that toxic equivalents were significantly lower in the breast milk of the women taking chlorella tablets than in the control group. The results suggested that supplementing with chlorella reduces transfer of dioxins to the child through breast milk, although the lowered levels seen may have been the result of more toxins being cleared from the bodies of the mothers taking chlorella. IgA levels were significantly higher in the chlorella group. Increased IgA levels in breast milk are considered a sign of reduced risk of infection in nursing infants (Journal of Medicinal Food, March, 2007).

Chlorella is comprised of a fibrous, indigestible outer shell (20%) and its inner nutrients (80%). It is the fibrous material which has been proven to actually bind with the heavy metals and pesticides – such as PCBs – which can accumulate in our bodies. A clean bloodstream, with an abundance of red blood cells to carry oxygen, is necessary to a strong natural defense system.

Chlorella’s cleansing action on the bowel and other elimination channels, as well as its protection of the liver, helps keep the blood clean. Clean blood insures that metabolic wastes are efficiently carried away from the tissues. Chlorella gets its name from the high amount of chlorophyl it possesses.

Chlorella contains more chlorophyl per gram than any other plant.

Chlorophyl is one of the greatest food substances for cleansing the bowel and other elimination systems, such as the liver and the blood. Green algae are the highest sources of chlorophyl in the plant world. And of all the green algae studied so far, chlorella has the highest, often ranging from 3 to 5% pure natural chlorophyll.

Hemoglobin is the protein in our red blood cells which binds with oxygen and gives blood its bright red color. Chlorophyll cells are nearly identical to hemoglobin, with one exception: Chlorophyll has a magnesium molecule at its center while hemoglobin has an iron molecule at the center of it. This is important because magnesium is essential for the heart to function properly. Every time our heart beats, it is utilizing magnesium to do so.

Chlorophyll is effective against anemia and stimulates the production of red blood cells in the body. It also helps carry oxygen around the body and to the brain. This is why chlorella is often called a ‘Brain Food’. Several researchers have suggested the use of chlorophyll as a medical therapy for anemia.

Chlorella contains:

  • Protein (Amino-Acid compositions)
  • Various kinds of Vitamins & Minerals to strengthn the immune system
  • Removes toxins and metals like Mercury, detoxifies the body
  • Contains Chlorophyl to facilitate hemoglobin production
  • Cotains Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) to support growth in children
  • Aids in weight management by decreasing food cravings
  • Recommended for people seeking nutritional balance.
  • Helps maintain youth and regain lost energy.

Chlorella Health Benefits

Chlorella is a food. As such, it is almost impossible to take too much chlorella. It is also this fibrous material which greatly augments healthy digestion and overall digestive track health.

Chlorella Will Improve Your Digestive System

Since chlorella has such a high chlorophyll content, people find chronic bad breath is often eliminated in just a few days on chlorella. Foul smelling stools are also greatly improved and chlorophyll has been attributed to relieving constipation.

Chlorella Contains Natural Digestive and other Enzymes

Chlorella contains enzymes such as chlorophyllase and pepsin, which are two digestive enzymes. Enzymes perform a number of important functions in the body. Chlorella has many different types of enzymes that our bodies need.

Chlorella is Alkaline and Helps Balance Your Body’s pH

It’s important that we maintain a balance body pH of ideally about 7.2-7.4, which is about neutral. However, because of our poor diet of junk food, overcooked, processed foods, fast food, which include soft drinks which have a pH of 2.7, most of us are not balanced.

This is important because most diseases start, live and thrive in an acidic environment and do not live well in an alkaline environment. Cancer rates have risen steadily so that now fully 1/3 of all people in the U. S. will get cancer in their lifetime. The rise of fast, junk and processed foods match those of rising cancer rates. 30 years ago, cancer in children was almost unheard of. Now they have entire hospital wards given over to children with cancer. Including whole foods like chlorella in your diet is one step you can take toward reducing your risks for cancer.

Chlorella Normalizes Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure

Studies have shown that chlorella tends to normalize blood sugar in cases of hypoglycemia. In hypoglycemia, blood sugar is too low. Proper levels of blood sugar are necessary for normal brain function, heart function and energy metabolism, all of which are crucial in sustaining good health and preventing disease. High blood pressure is one of the major risk factors in heart attack and stroke, which account for more fatalities in the United States than any other disease. Laboratory experiments have shown that regular use of chlorella reduces high blood pressure and prevents strokes in rats.

The Anti-Aging Properties of Chlorella

Chlorella, Jewel of the Far East

“Dr Benjamin Frank, author of The No-Aging Diet, suggests that human RNA/DNA production slows down progressively as people age, resulting in lower levels of vitality and increased vulnerability to various diseases. He recommended a diet rich in nucleic acids to counter this “aging” process. Current levels by laboratory analysis shows 3% RNA and 0.3% DNA in Chlorella which would make it one of the highest known food substances in nucleic acids…..When our RNA and DNA are in good repair and able to function most efficiently, our bodies are able to use nutrients more effectively, get rid of toxins and avoid disease. Cells are able to repair themselves and the energy level and vitality of the whole body is raised….Dr Frank had thought that brewer’s yeast was the highest RNA food but then he found out sardines were 10 times higher (with 343mg per 100 grams). Chlorella is 10 times higher than sardines with 3g RNA per 100 grams….Eating foods high in nucleic acids provides the material for the repair and production of human nucleic acids, and it is the breakdown of DNA and RNA in the cells that is believed to be one of the main factors in aging and degenerative diseases.” – Dr Bernard Jensen,D.O.,Ph.D.

Chlorella: The sun-powered super nutrient and its beneficial properties

“Since Chlorella Growth Factor is so effective in stimulating growth in human beings and beefing up the immune system to fight off various diseases, Dr Bernard Jensen and other researchers have wondered whether or not Dr Frank’s pioneering work on aging might apply to Chlorella….Dr Frank found that his treatment actually did help his patients regain energy and a more youthful appearance. In addition, long-standing problems with arthritis, memory loss and depression began to abate.” – William H. Lee, R. Ph., Ph.D. and Michael Rosenbaum, M.D.

Chlorella and Its Effect on Degenerative Diseases

Chlorella: Natural Medicinal Algae

“With the continuos exposure of our foods to hydrocarbon insecticides and herbicides it seems that Chlorella should find its way onto everyone’s dining table. Chlorella should be taken daily to remove these harmful substances from our bodies before they cause cancer and other degenerative diseases. Chlorella has great potential in aiding the treatment of cancer, AIDS, Epstein Barr virus and other chronic viral illnesses and is especially helpful in preventing the degenerative diseases associated with the aging process.” – Dr David Steenblock,B.S.,M.Sc.,D.O.

Chlorella Influences How Genes Express Themselves

Scientists in Malaysia backed up this study by finding that C. vulgaris kills cancer cells by decreasing expression of the Bcl-2 gene. When this gene is mutated, it prevents cells from dieing and allows cancers to develop. C. vulgaris also increased the expression of capsase 8, a gene that plays a central role in the execution phase of cell apoptosis (Journal of Zhejiang University, Science B, January).

These findings offer a graphic example of how what we chose to put into our bodies governs the way our genes express themselves. The more we are able to regulate gene expression, the greater the control we have over our physiological destiny.

More recent research has shown other anti-cancer bioactivity of chlorella, including its ability to inhibit the COX-2 enzyme that leads to cancer-causing inflammation and the pain that accompanies it. Chlorella was shown to have anti-thrombotic effects that can lead to increased blood flow and reduce the possibility of platelet aggregation that might induce blood clots. It reduces PLA2, an important marker of heart disease, and encourages the production of proteins that regulate cell function, and enzymes that regulate calcium in the body. Formation and production of tumors, and viral replication were inhibited by chlorella, and the anti-tumor response of the immune system was strengthened. (International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition), December 23, 2008.

Chlorella is a Treasure Chest of Life Enhancing Properties

Chlorella is a tiny, single-celled water-grown green algae with a nucleus. It is chocked of nutrients including an immense amount of readily available chlorophyll, the life blood of plants. Chlorophyll absorbs energy from the sun to facilitate photosynthesis. It is central to plant metabolism and critical to plant functions such as growth and respiration. Without this green blood of plants, life as we know it would not exist. Chlorophyll is chemically similar in composition to human blood, except that the central atom in chlorophyll is magnesium, while iron is the central component in human blood.

Chlorophyll neutralizes environmental toxins and pollutants. It helps the blood carry oxygen to all cells and tissues. Cancer cannot thrive in cells that are fully oxygenated. Chlorophyll plays a part in chlorella’s ability to detoxify heavy metals, and is a natural wound healer. There is evidence that chlorophyll reduces the ability of carcinogens to bind with DNA in major organs. Its anti-mutagenic properties make it protective against toxins such as pharmaceutical drugs.

The vitamins and minerals in chlorella are plentiful. It is rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K, and is one of the few whole food sources of vitamin D. Chlorella has the complete vitamin B complex with more B-12 than liver by weight. Beta carotene and lutein, two carotenoids with a wealth of disease fighting benefits, are found in abundance.

Chlorella contains 58% highly digestible complete vegetarian protein. Zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, rare trace minerals, essential fatty acids including gamma linolenic acid (GLA), and polysaccharides are found in chlorella. One of the ways chlorella eases digestion is through its broad spectrum of enzymes that includes pepsin.

These nutrients were combined by nature, not a corporation. As such, they exist in natural harmony and synergy and are highly bioavailable for use in the body. This makes chlorella a better choice than isolated compounds taken individually, or combination compounds like multi-vitamin capsules. Chlorella can replace many expensive individual supplements and drastically lower the cost of supplementing while increasing its quality.

Just over 18% of chlorella is growth factor produced in its nuclei. Chlorella growth factor offers many of the benefits found in human growth hormone. Chlorella is up to 10% RNA, and up to 3% DNA.

There is plenty of fiber too. The fibrous outer cell wall of chlorella provides material to enhance digestion and keep the digestive tract healthy.

Chlorella provides natural detoxification, inflammation control, cholesterol regulation, immune system strength, estrogen balance, blood sugar stabilization, and digestive bliss. It is loaded with antioxidants to keep you looking and feeling young, and even reduces the percentage of body fat.

Chlorella Reduces Body Fat

Researchers in Kyoto, Japan fed chlorella for a 16 week period to 17 people with high-risk factors for lifestyle-related diseases, and 17 healthy subjects. They found that in both groups, chlorella intake resulted in noticeable reductions in body fat percentages, total serum cholesterol levels, and fasting blood glucose levels. They found that many genes influencing metabolism and insulin signaling pathways were influenced in their expression by chlorella. When chlorella was no longer ingested, the genes returned to their pre-ingestion state (Journal of Medicinal Food, September, 2008).

Chlorella a Potent Chelator: Binding Heavy Metals & Escorting Them Out

A group of 40 rats was divided into one control group and three groups that were treated with cadmium. One cadmium group received no chlorella, one received 5% chlorella, and one received 10% chlorella. After 8 weeks, the relative liver weight was significantly lower in the group receiving no chlorella compared with both groups receiving chlorella, indicating severe liver damage in the no-chlorella group. The group displayed significantly higher concentrations of cadmium in their livers than did the groups receiving chlorella. Liver RNA was high in the chlorella treated groups (Journal of Medicinal Food, September, 2008).

In another study assessing the chelating abilities of chlorella, levels of interleukine-6, a stimulator of red blood cell production, were investigated along with the number of adherent and non-adherent cells. Mice that had been drinking water containing 1300 ppm of lead acetate were treated with chlorella for 10 days. The researchers found that chlorella improved cellular function, increased the ability of cells to produce interleukin-6, and restored the reduced number of non-adherent cells. Monitoring of lead poisoning demonstrated that chlorella treatment significantly reduced lead levels in blood and tissues, completely restoring the normal levels of healthy fats in the liver, and decreasing abnormally high plasma levels of fats (Food Chemistry Toxicology, July, 2008.

These findings make chlorella a highly desirable addition to any meal containing foods in which the presence of heavy metals is suspected, such as fish. Taking chlorella while undergoing removal of dental fillings containing mercury will allow the chlorella to bind with the mercury and escort it out of the body.

A Natural Immune Booster

Apart from its benefit as a food, there are numerous studies, largely emanating from Japan (e.g. Sarkar 1994 or Hayatsu 1993 or Konishi 1990), which show chlorella to be a strong booster of the immune system. In particular chlorella increases interferon production which in turn stimulates macrophages (the “digesters” of rogue cells) and T-lymphocytes (the identifiers of rogue cells). Not surprisingly several studies show that it combats infection (e.g. Konishi).

It has also been shown in Japanese research to promote growth in children and to be a strong aid to tissue healing.

Chlorella Side Effects

  • Mild side effects from chlorella that have been reported include nausea, bloating and stomach upsets, although these usually disappear after a short time of use. Some people using chlorella have developed a sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Chlorella causes an allergic reaction in some users, which manifests as breathing difficulties, a tightness in the throat or chest, chest pains, skin hives, rash, itching or swollen skin. If you experience any of these allergic symptoms, stop taking chlorella immediately and consult your doctor.
  • Chlorella’s tough, cellulose cell wall is hard to digest. As a result, people who suffer from cellulase enzyme insufficiency cannot tolerate intake of chlorella because they lack the enzyme necessary to digest it. To use this supplement, they will have to take it in conjunction with a digestive enzyme supplement that contains cellulase to facilitate the digestion of chlorella. This cellulase digestive supplement is available in most health food stores.
  • There is anecdotal evidence that chlorella is relatively high in mercury content, at levels that are higher than what is considered safe. Intake of high levels of mercury can result in tingling sensations in the toes, fingers and lips, as well as headaches, fatigue, irritability, muscle weakness and loss of concentration. There are, however, no clinical studies to support this.
  • Chlorella has been found to raise the uric levels in the blood. This tends to exacerbate gout, which is a rheumatic condition in which uric acid crystals form in the joints. High uric levels also present a risk factor for heart disease.

Chlorella Considerations

Since chlorella is sold as a supplement rather than a drug, there is no requirement for extensive clinical studies on its side effects or interactions. For this reason, full studies on harmful side effects are not readily available, and detailed information on ill effects and interactions are incomplete.

Chlorella Precaution
With such little research conducted on this popular supplement, pregnant women should err on the side of caution and avoid taking it. This is even more important because of the potentially high mercury content level.

The experts speak on chlorella and cancer:

  • Chlorella is green algae, which, in a study by Fukada, was observed to have immune-stimulating qualities. It’s another herb whose healing properties have not been of much interest to Western medicine.
Aids A Second Opinion by Gary Null PhD with James Feast, page 528
  • Most research has been done on a one-celled alga known as chlorella. This has been shown to have powerful anti-tumor effects. An oral administration of chlorella protected between 73 and 80 percent of mice against several kinds of cancer. However, all the mice that received chlorella that had been deprived of its protein, died. (Cancer Therapy by Ralph W Moss PhD, page 203)
  • Chlorella can neutralize and eliminate some of the contaminating heavy metals and strengthen the immune system, and GLA, which enhances prostaglandin production and possesses anti-inflammatory abilities. (Complete Encyclopedia Of Natural Healing by Gary Null PhD, page 135)
  • Japanese scientists studied chlorella (pyrenoidosa) as a biological response modifier. First, experimental mice were given chlorella every other day for ten days. Then one of three kinds of cancer—breast, leukemia or Ehrlich ascites—were injected into them. All of the untreated mice died within 20 days.
Cancer Therapy by Ralph W Moss PhD, page 203
  • Natural healers recommend chlorella for nonspecific complaints such as fatigue and for anyone who generally wants to feel stronger or healthier. It is also used by alternative physicians as part of an overall cancer treatment program.

  • Since chlorella does not directly kill cancer cells, the scientists concluded that its effects were caused by boosting the immune response.
Cancer Therapy by Ralph W Moss PhD, page 204
  • Chlorella does not contain the biliprotein phycocyanin found in blue-green algae such as spirulina and wild blue-green; therefore it does not have this anti-cancer dimension. Those who benefit from the immune-strengthening value of CGF and also want phycocyanin can simply add a blue-green alga. Any two or more micro-algae combine well, especially if both are needed.
Healing With Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford, page 194
  • In another experiment, a group of scientists took a hot water extract of chlorella and injected it into the body cavities of mice that had first been inoculated with tumor cells. They found that “survival times were strikingly prolonged.” Furthermore, when they gave mice injections of chlorella, their cells still exhibited “an anti-tumor effect” 24 hours later. This effect remained intact even after ‘T’ type white blood cells and macrophage (scavenger) cells were destroyed, but it was effectively wiped out by irradiation. Chlorella’s anticancer effect was thus dependent on the portion of the immune system most sensitive to x-rays.
Cancer Therapy by Ralph W Moss PhD, page 204
  • Many reports have come from Japanese research studies that followed the nuclear catastrophe resulting from atomic bombs that were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. In a report to the General Meeting of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan on an early study in animals, Ichimura (1973) reported that chlorella (8 grams daily) increased elimination of cadmium: threefold in feces and sevenfold in urine. Other researchers from Japan showed that chlorella helped detoxify uranium and lead (Horikoshi et al. 1979). chlorella has detoxification potential for similar compounds, such as dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls. (PCBs are chemical compounds used in plastics, insulation, and flame retardants, with potential to cause cancer and liver damage.) Other research indicates that chlorella is useful in detoxification of high levels of mercury in the body caused by removal of mercury amalgam. Some dentists recommend chlorella to patients who are having mercury amalgams replaced (as well as to themselves and staff who can incur accidental exposure from day-to-day exposure to amalgam filling procedures) (O’Brien 2001).
Disease Prevention And Treatment by Life Extension Foundation, page 859
  • Japanese researchers recently discovered that chlorella could raise blood levels of the protein albumin. Albumin is one of the body’s most powerful antioxidants as well as its main transport system, carrying vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, hormones, and other essential substances throughout the body. Albumin is also instrumental in carrying toxins away from cells and into the liver, where they are broken down and later excreted from the body. Without adequate levels of albumin, the kidneys, liver, and other vital organs cannot do their jobs as well, and the immune system cannot function as efficiently. Numerous studies have documented that a low albumin level is a marker for serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. They point to test-tube studies confirming that raising albumin levels can both prevent cancerous changes and extend the life span of human cells. Although no such studies have been done on humans, it makes sense that raising albumin levels would help to restore health.
Earl Mindell’s Supplement Bible by Earl Mindell RPh PhD, page 24
  • The law of similars (“like cures like”) offers another approach to understanding the immune-strengthening quality of chlorella: an organism with a tough outer cell wall may well possess the basic properties which strengthen our own cellular structure against invading organisms and toxins.
Healing With Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford, page 193
  • Since chlorella has a true nucleus, it is a more evolved organism than the other common green micro-algae and therefore may offer superior-quality RNA/DNA. This particular aspect of its RNA/DNA, measured by the CGF, strengthens immunity by improving the activity of T- and B-cells, which defend against viruses and other invading microorganisms, and macrophages, which destroy cancer and cellular debris in general.

  • For cancer, AIDS, Epstein-Barr syndrome, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, tumors, Candida overgrowth, excessive mucus, edema, and other conditions associated with dampness, wild blue-green is generally the most useful. Individuals who are not particularly excessive will benefit from a moderate dosage of 1.5-2 grams. The upper dosage ranges of cereal grass, chlorella (excellent for disorders with immune malfunction), spirulina, and dunaliella are also beneficial additions (often spirulina and dunaliella are used together). One may choose the one or two most appropriate of these green foods based on their properties.

  • Some micro-algae have very favorable nutritional profiles for cancer and immune therapies. Spirulina, chlorella, and wild blue-green (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae) provide cellular protection with exceptional amounts of beta carotene (provitamin A) and chlorophyll; dunaliella is the highest known natural source of beta carotene. chlorella, the alga to emphasize in those with the greatest deficiency, stimulates immunity in the treatment of all degenerative diseases by means of the “chlorella Growth Factor” (CGF). These bitter micro-algae often work well with chlorella or spirulina.

  • Chlorella is a one-cell blue-green alga that is highly nutritive as a food and also stimulates the immune system. It increases macrophage activity and has shown antitumor effects. Chorellan is a substance found in chlorella that stimulates interferon production. There are several papers on the prevention and/or inhibition of cancer using chlorella as well as documentation of its DNA repair mechanism.24 one of the many benefits of chlorella is its ability to increase serum albumin levels. A drop in albumin level has many negative effects on the body. Of all the super green foods, chlorella is the one that impresses me the most.

  • A study on chlorella published in Japan in 1992 showed that chlorella has impressive effects on blood chemistry. It increased red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and albumin. The ability of chlorella to increase albumin is vitally important because so many people with cancer have a decreased level of albumin. This decreased level correlates with a poor prognosis; chlorella is a truly important supplement for anyone whose albumin level is low.

  • Chlorella is useful in a wide variety of maladies and conditions, including chronic gastritis, high blood pressure, some forms of cancer, diabetes, constipation, anemia, and high cholesterol. It helps clear toxic metals from the body. Chlorella has antitumor and anti-inflammatory properties and strengthens the immune system. The microalgae support normal growth and help maintain health in old age. They reduce pitta and kapha and, in moderation, are healing for vata.

  • There have been dozens of animal studies on chlorella and chlorella extracts involving immune response to cancer. One such study involved mice given chlorella prior to transplantation of mammary carcinoma. The results were a 70 percent sixty-day survival of the chlorella group versus no survival in the control group. Mice in the control group were also transplanted with tumors but did not receive chlorella.

  • Green foods refers to chlorophyll-rich supplements from sources such as microalgae (including spirulina, blue-green algae, and chlorella) and the young grasses of cereal plants (particularly barley, wheat, and alfalfa). Chlorophyll acts as an antioxidant and may have medicinal benefits against cancer and immune problems. Many people also take green-food concentrates to boost energy levels and physical and mental performance.

  • In 1990, a study on chlorella was performed at the Medical College of Virginia. Fifteen glioblastoma patients were administered 20 grams of powdered chlorella and 150 ml of liquid chlorella, in some cases combined with standard chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. There was a significant increase in health and immune status immediately, and a striking 40 percent two-year survival rate was reflected in follow-up studies. This is extremely rare for this type of tumor, which normally might yield a 10 percent survival rate after two years.

  • Lactoferrin, lipoic acid, and chlorella are the three best supplements I have found for enhancing the nutritional status and raising the albumin level of those with cancer or any chronic illness. Lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein, is a vital element to the human body. It retrieves iron from the foods we eat and delivers it to areas of the body where it is needed. Many people, particularly those with cancer, become anemic because their body is not assimilating iron properly.

  • A chlorella extract has demonstrated antitumor and antime-tastatic effects in animal experiments. Chlorella has shown some experimental antiatherogenic activity and some radio-protective and chemo-detoxifying effects. It has shown some preliminary benefit in immune function and in some with fibromyalgia.

  • I also recommend the use of chlorella and/or Green Magma as a twice-daily green drink. Chlorella is a highly nutritive one-celled blue-green algae that is a powerful immune system stimulant that has also demonstrated anti-tumor effects. Research has shown that chlorella is able to repair the DNA system and increase serum albumin levels.

  • Chlorella is a tiny single-celled water-grown green alga that contains the highest chlorophyll level per ounce of any plant, as well as protein (nearly 58 percent), carbohydrates, all of the B vitamins, vitamins C and E, amino acids (including all nine essential ones), enzymes, and rare trace minerals. Chlorella strengthens the immune system.

  • Green chlorophyll is the main coloring matter in all green plants, and it relates most closely to Qi, the life force. Green plants and algae are high in chlorophyll, include spirulina and chlorella. Foods and herbs that contain high levels of chlorophyll show pharmacological evidence of cancer prevention, perhaps because pigments in green vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli, and lettuce bind with and thus stimulate excretion of cancer-causing chemicals. Even more interesting is a report from one researcher that “Given their exclusive dietary origin, . . . chlorophyll metabolites may represent essential nutrients that coordinate cellular metabolism (through nuclear receptors).”

  • In all anticancer diets, one should incorporate chlorophyll-rich foods derived from the juice of wheat grass, barley grass or a special green algae known in the trade as chlorella. Chlorella, has been found to have greater anticancer properties than any other anticancer supplement. Of course, these ‘green foods’ are very rich in a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and other health-giving constituents as well.

  • I recommend chlorella to all cancer patients regardless of any other green drink they might use. Chlorella is a small, one-celled algae containing a nucleus and a large amount of chlorophyll. Its protein content is approximately 58% with the balance made up of carbohydrates, all the B Vitamins, Vitamin C and E, amino acids and valuable trace minerals. It has more B12 than liver and a substantial amount of beta-carotene. Because it has a strong cell wall, it requires processing in order to make all of its nutrients available. It is virtually a complete food in itself. It acts as both a powerful nutrient and a detoxifying food.

  • Reducing the stresses of life: Researchers in Kyoto (Journal of Medicinal Food, Sept 2008) gave chlorella over a 16 week period to 17 people at high-risk for lifestyle-related diseases and 17 healthy subjects. They conducted blood biochemical tests and gene profile expression analysis before and after the consumption period and concluded that chlorella significantly controlled gene expression and that this varied with consumption level.
