Pomegranate Cancer Treatment

Pomegranate can assist in a holistic cancer treatment. Pomegranate will not cure cancer alone but in combination with other herbs, juices and therapies, rosemary will boost cancer treatment effectiveness. An ancient fruit that has a sweet and juicy taste contains vitamins and nutrients that can cure diseases. Some research shows pomegranate can inhibit cancer as well.

Pomegranates Historical Medicinal Usage
Pomegranates has long history as to its medical usage. Pomegranates was used as a folk medicine. Pomegranates had been used as an expellant of intestinal worms and prevention from common colds. The fruit’s astringent properties have been used to treat various ailments (cuts, sore throats, tapeworms, dysentery, and gum disease). Pomegranate seed beneficially treats diarrhea, and an extract from its peel promotes wound healing. Pomegranates are a good source of vitamin C and iron. In Ayurvedic medicine, the astringent properties of pomegranates are linked with bone and cartilage build-up; in the cosmetic arena, fruit-peel extract has been shown to stimulate a type of procollagen synthesis and inhibit a dermal degeneration process.

Pomegranate Health Benefits

The recent interest in the antioxidant power of pomegranates began primarily in 2000 when a group of scientists in Israel demonstrated the effectiveness of pomegranates in treating atherosclerosis. The research was headed by Professor Michael Aviram, an internationally recognized authority on the effect of food on heart disease. Professor Aviram was the first to prove the beneficial effects of red wine on cholesterol oxidation in humans. The research shows that pomegranate juice contains the highest antioxidant capacity compared to other juices, red wine, green tea, tomatoes, vitamin E and other headline makers. Pomegranate has been gaining popularity for menopausal symptoms due to the increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease and strokes from artificial hormone replacement therapy.

Pomegranate, Cure for Cancer

Scientific research is demonstrating that pomegranate may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of various types of cancer such as breast cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer. Pomegranates are the richest source of a natural substance called ellagic acid.

According to master herbalist and certified nutritionist Donald Yance in his book Herbal Medicine, Healing and Cancer, ellagic acid “inhibits cancer formation and is believed to inhibit cancer mutation by latching onto DNA-masking sensitive sites on the genetic material that might otherwise be occupied by harmful chemicals.

Ellagic acid is particularly effective in the inhibition of lung cancer caused by tobacco.” “Pomegranate fruit continues to show great promise,” says Mukhtar, professor of dermatology at the School of Medicine and Public Health and a member of the Carbone Cancer Center. “We have earlier shown that pomegranate fruit contains very powerful skin and prostate cancer-fighting agents. These recent findings expand the possible health benefits of the fruit to the leading cause of cancer death in the country and worldwide: lung cancer.”

Pomegranate also contains polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant. Polyphenols function as ACE inhibitors, which blocks the synthesis of estrogen.

Pomegranate Dosage

No dosing consensus exists. Doses range from 50 to 1,000 milliliters of pomegranate juice taken by mouth daily for 2-5 weeks. Pomegranate extracts with 100 to 200 milligrams of ellagic acid have also been taken. Pomegranate extracts in the form of gels and mouthwashes have also been used to treat dental conditions short-term.

Pomegranate Precautions

Pomegranate safety concerns can include allergic reactions and potential drug interactions. Also, pomegranates can lower blood pressure, which may be a problem for people who already have low blood pressure.

Pomegranates Juicing

If you want the juice, but not the seeds, you have a number of options: Use a food mill to grind fresh juice from the seeds, leaving the seeds trapped in the mill. Pulse the pips in a blender with short bursts and strain. Cut the fruits in half crosswise and ream them as you would a lemon. Place the seeds in a sealed plastic freezer bag and roll over them with a rolling pin.
