Studies in Greece have shown a high consumption of onions, garlic and other allium herbs to be protective against stomach cancer.

Another study was done by Cornell University food scientists, led by Rui Hai Liu, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of food science, Western pungent yellow and Northern Red onions are higher in anti-cancer chemicals than other varieties tested. Furthermore, Liu found that shallots and Western Yellow and pungent yellow onion varieties are particularly effective against liver cancer cells, while pungent yellow and Western Yellow varieties have the greatest effect on colon cancer cells.

“Onions are one of the richest sources of flavonoids in the human diet,” Liu pointed out. “And flavonoid consumption has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes.”

Flavonoids are not only anti-cancer but also are known to be antibacterial, antiviral, anti-allergenic and anti-inflammatory.” Onions also contain quercetin, a very potent antioxidant. It does not only protect against free radicals that oxidize the cells, but also blocks carcinogen agents in the environment, slows the development and spreading of cancer cells in our body etc. By inhibiting the producing and releasing of histamine and other allergic or inflammatory agents, quercetin is one of the main anti-inflammatory substances in the body, preventing and curing even very severe allergies or inflammations.

Onion Precaution

Onion should be taken with meals preferably raw, as fried or cooked onions are comparatively difficult to digest. For therapeutic purposes, it is advisable to use onion juice instead of the whole onion. Its being a stimulating and irritating food, one should excess consumption. Too much consumption of onions would affect your breath. You should brush after you have eaten.

Onion comes in various forms and is an ingredient in many products. For soothing sore throats and coughs, use 2 Onions and 2 tablespoons honey, steeped overnight at room temperature. Steeping 4 medium-sized hot Onions in 1 liter or pint of hot water for 2 or 3 hours works as an infusion for treating colds, congestion, coughs, and bronchitis. Simmer 3 Onions in ¾ cup of water for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain and ad honey for relieving congestion.
